NC state rep apologizes for Mormon marriage comment

(CNN) – A Democratic North Carolina state representative apologized Friday for saying in an interview with CNN that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's Mormon faith allows individuals to "have multiple wives."

In the interview with CNN Political Reporter Peter Hamby, state Rep. Alma Adams said, "From what I understand about the Mormon faith you can have multiple wives. That's sort of a contradiction. There are questions about who Romney is and what he believes in terms of that particular issue."

She predicted the conservative voters who supported a constitutional amendment defining marriage in her state as between a man and a woman would not "be OK" with his faith.

Adams, who is the leader of the Legislative Black Caucus, issued an apology Friday afternoon.

"I want to apologize in no uncertain terms for my comments on Mitt Romney and the Mormon faith," she said in a statement. "I recognize there is no place in our public or political discourse for such comments, I regret making them and am sorry for any hurt or misunderstanding they may have caused."

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints outlawed polygamy in 1890.

This woman said this because she believed it as many non-Mormon Americans do just like the Birther's don't believe Obama is a U.S. or those who believe he is a Muslim. This is what happens when you're misinformed or just plain ignorant and too lazy to do your own intelligent factual research. Now that she is better informed, her apology is in order. No wonder American children are below the grade level of other countries.

No apology is in order. Yes! Polygamy is part of Mormon faith. Warren Jeffs and Willard are birds of a feather. Almost reminds me of HBO's show Big Love.

No! They obey the law just like everyone else. You are thinking about FLDS. They are not members of the Chruch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Well considering Warren Jeffs a a true mormon as he calls himself feels differently her remarks were not too off the mark. I wonder how many Baptists down South will vote for a cult. It will be interesting to see.

But Romney's Grandfather fled the US when polygamy was outlawed, and started a polygamus cult in Mexico. That's why Romney's father was born in Mexico.

She had no idea what she was talking about and the ironic part is that Alma is a name found all over in the Bk. of Mormon.
I wonder if she also thinks people in the South still practice slavery since the Mormons got rid of polygamy just after the civil war. It would make as much sense.

Why apologize for the truth? Mormon faith does allow multiple wives (not husbands). Like all faiths not everyone “who believes” follows the same rules. Like most Christians aren’t bigots, but some are.
It’s not like she’s pushing a lie – like the one about our President isn’t a US citizen.

Romney's religion should be off the table. Don't be like the GOPers who screamed Muslim ad naseum during the 2008 election. Romney is wrong for America because he is a GOPer and their policies brought America to this bad place. GOP policies are NEVER good for ordinary Americans.

And so what if Mormons, or ANYBODY, DID want to have multiple wives, Democrats should celebrate their happiness just as they would if it was a man/man or woman/woman marriage. Are you bigots or something? What makes you think you can dictate how many wives somebody can have? Seperation of church and state, remember that.

Gotta say I'm disappointed in fellow liberals taking the tack of jumping ont he religion thing. Seriously guys...a tongue-in-cheek wisecrack here or there about magic undies or the equivalent kind of jab from the other side at people who profess to be atheists or agnostics...that's one thing. But misinformed claims about Jeffs, polygamy, etc., just plays into the false equivalencies the MSM is desperately trying to create. Yuo should know better because we claim to know better. Mittens being a Mormon has nothing to do with anything. He's a despicable, opportunistic, pandering coroprate puppet and would be no matter what faith he held.

There are those who believe in having multiple wives. These families exist and we should allow them their freedom to do so. Television has given us views into the lives of these families.

Funny how a minority Democrat can speak so out of turn and be so wrong and a simple apology will satisfy the press. If a GOP member said something like that about a minority it would be front page news. Ignorant people should keep their mouths shut. But she got is said.

Devon– Just how often do you attend an LDS Temple. I do all the time and see blacks regularly. The only thing getting a 0 here is your truth scale.
