NC state rep apologizes for Mormon marriage comment

(CNN) – A Democratic North Carolina state representative apologized Friday for saying in an interview with CNN that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's Mormon faith allows individuals to "have multiple wives."

In the interview with CNN Political Reporter Peter Hamby, state Rep. Alma Adams said, "From what I understand about the Mormon faith you can have multiple wives. That's sort of a contradiction. There are questions about who Romney is and what he believes in terms of that particular issue."

She predicted the conservative voters who supported a constitutional amendment defining marriage in her state as between a man and a woman would not "be OK" with his faith.

Adams, who is the leader of the Legislative Black Caucus, issued an apology Friday afternoon.

"I want to apologize in no uncertain terms for my comments on Mitt Romney and the Mormon faith," she said in a statement. "I recognize there is no place in our public or political discourse for such comments, I regret making them and am sorry for any hurt or misunderstanding they may have caused."

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints outlawed polygamy in 1890.

I can't believe the number of ignorant people there are, including Rep. Adams and many of the responders above. Mitt Romney is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, sometimes called "Mormons". The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints does NOT allow multiple wives. Warren Jeffs is NOT a member of that church. Black elders DO attend the temple. Hundreds of thousands of black members attend regularly. Where have you been, Devon? In this age of information at our fingertips, it is appalling that so many would pass along falsehoods. The truth is easily found at Mormon.org. Rep. Adams didn't even acknowledge that she was utterly and completely wrong.

And so what if Mormons, or ANYBODY, DID want to have multiple wives, Democrats should celebrate their happiness just as they would if it was a man/man or woman/woman marriage. Are you bigots or something? What makes you think you can dictate how many wives somebody can have? Seperation of church and state, remember that.

Yes! The pinnacle of hypocrisy. Weren't you blabbering off yesterday about Rev. Wright? Don't dish it out if you can't take it. And don't talk out both sides of your mouth. You sound like your flip flopping nominee.

    Do Latter-day Saints practice polygamy?

No. There are more than 14 million members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and not one of them is a polygamist. The practice of polygamy is strictly prohibited in the Church. The general standard of marriage in the Church has always been monogamy, as indicated in the Book of Mormon (see Jacob 2:27). For periods in the Bible polygamy was practiced by the patriarchs Abraham and Jacob, as well as kings David and Solomon. It was again practiced by a minority of Latter-day Saints in the early years of the Church. Polygamy was officially discontinued in 1890 — 122 years ago. Those who practice polygamy today have nothing whatsoever to do with the Church.

  10. DumbasRocks [R]s

Since it is true that polygamy was once practiced as part of the Mormon religion, if Rep. Adams repeats this out-of-context nugget as the truth for today's Mormons, and repeats it again and again, despite what we know about the Mormon religion today, and then purposefully repeats it yet again and again in the face of overwhelming facts to the contrary....surely it will BECOME THE TRUTH!! Right??? This is, afterall, how "truth" is determined in the [R] party!

Oh wait. Rep. Adams is a [D]....nevermind. Yes, as a cogent human being she should take responsibility for and correct her mistake, as she has already done. On the otherhand, if she were a [R], can you imagine how hard she would stick to her original story, how manic she would be in continuing to peddle it as the "truth"? And in that case she would actually be cheered-on in her quest to turn lies into truth by the [R] true-believers who come on here and equivocate and apologize for every disservice foisted on our country by the malignant rightwing brownshirts.

"It’s not like she’s pushing a lie – like the one about our President isn’t a US citizen."

I don't think she was intentionally doing it to lie, but she was grossly misinformed and wound up doing nothing but airing her own ignorance. Polygamy has not been acceptable for Mormons...as a matter of doctrine...since 1890. The vast majority of Mormons are no more vicariously responsible for what whackadoo extremist splinter groups like Warren Jeffs' do than the vast majority of Muslims are responsible for what crazies like al Qaeda do....or the vast majority of Christians are responsible for the behavior of exrtemist militant Christian neo-nazi groups do right here in our own country.

Really? That's like asking how many women have been president of the Augusta Country Club. Grow up. The "reverse racism" poutrage just confirms for most people that you are indeed bigotted.

Aside from being barely coherent, your little tyrade about alleged discrimination in the Mormon religion is an entirely separate issue and has absolutely nothing to do with the issue presented by the article, which is to say that alot of people are pretty misinformed about (a) whether a candidate's religious beliefs should even matter and (b) whether Mormons believe in, allow or promote polygamy. The answer to both is a big fat negative. I will give you credit for the non sequitor of the day though.

It is amazing that hat-woman is actually voted into office. She is the same person who went ballistic with the Trayvon incident, immediately calling for lynching. She is a radical racist the likes of any Klu Klux Klan member being elected. Her district needs to be re-designed to include intelligent people that won't vote her in. This is necessary gerrymandering.

In my opinion, this type of apology is even more offensive. People say exactly what they want, get the media coverage they want, and then issue a statement apologizing. Hypocrite, that’s what you are lady. You can apologize all you want, the damage is done.

Republican and Democratic politicians need schooling on the separation of church and state. The United States do not have a state sponsored religion. Keep religion out of politics!

Rep Adams must not know very much about Mormons. Maybe she should try reading the Book of Mormon and read the current words of the Prophets to learn a little bit more about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

    ====================================================================================
Not sure what this has to do with Rev. Wright but the hypocrisy I'm pointing out is ON THE LEFT. Those that are going crazy to support gay marriage have an issue with polygamy? Well they SHOULDN'T!! This Democrat Rep should be very happy for polygamists if they are happy in there relationships. Instead she is trying to force her religious beliefs on them and view them through that filter. If we're going to accept gay marriage then we'd better open and accepting of polygamy. Does the left have a problem with that?
