Romney campaign touts day one initiatives in first general election ad

Washington (CNN) - Mitt Romney, the likely GOP presidential nominee, is using his first general election ad to highlight the policy priorities he would enact on his first day in office, asking voters, "What would a Romney Presidency be like?"

The spot, titled "Day One," began airing Friday in Iowa, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia - all battleground states. The spot says Romney, as soon as he took office, would approve the Keystone Pipeline, "creating thousands of jobs that Obama blocked."

The controversial proposed 1,700 mile pipeline would carry oil from Canada through the U.S. to the Texas coast.

President Barack Obama last January decided against issuing a permit that would have allowed construction of the pipeline. Republicans attacked the administration over the decision because they say it would not only promote energy security but also create jobs. Romney previously has said he would have approved it.

Environmentalists bitterly oppose the pipeline because of the damage the construction might cause.

The White House has said it will make a final decision on the project after the election.

The Romney commercial emphasizes some of the same policy ideas the candidate highlights on the stump, promising tax cuts that "reward job creators, not punish them."

The spot says on Romney's first day as president he would issue an order to begin replacing the Obama health care initiative "with common sense health care reform."

But Obama's campaign responded saying Romney's day one promises are empty, just like the promises he made in his 2002 Massachusetts gubernatorial campaign.

"Romney said he would use his business experience to cut spending and debt- but both increased under his watch and he left Massachusetts with the largest per-capita debt in the nation," Obama spokeswoman Lis Smith said in a statement. "Romney promised he'd use this same private sector experience to create jobs, but Massachusetts ranked 47th out of 50th in job creation and lagged the nation in almost all key economic indicators. And the one thing he did accomplish-implementing health care reform that was a model for federal reform-is now something he would undo on day one of his presidency."

As CNN reported Thursday, the campaign purchased at least $1.2 million of ad time in Ohio, North Carolina, Iowa and Virginia for broadcast time beginning Friday and running through Tuesday, according to a Republican ad buying source.

The campaign also released a Spanish-language version of the ad.

On Thursday in Jacksonville, Florida, Romney told reporters the campaign would be entering the high stakes ad wars soon.

"I certainly hope that you'll get a chance to see our first ad that will come up in a couple of days. It will be a positive ad about the things that I will do if I am president," Romney said.

Why do we need a pipeline? I thought that little minor- mission accomplished – we will be greeted as liberators endeavor in Iraq was going to result in all the cheap oil we could consume.
But seriously… fossil fuel is a limited resource. The time to invest in non-polluting energy resources is now. Keep in mind that this technology is eventually going to be developed and required all over the world. Wouldn’t it be great if the US was the country to create and sell it first?

Just stating that he will do those things on day one of his presidency proves that Romney is a liar.

Mark Poulson, the cost to attend an Obama fundraiser is determined by unregulated, supply-and-demand capitalism. If you have a problem with that, you may want to refrain from telling the leaders of the party you support.

    2. allow the keystone pipeline but any time there is a spill you and your progeny has to drink the spilled content.
    3. Ban gay marriage but any neocon found cheating would be castrated
    4. Declare war on Iran but put the progeny of neocons on the front line after the republican draft dodgers brigade
    5. Charity starts at home let us start with cutting all social services to all registurd republicans including the socialist social security and the lifetime pensions for the republican politicians.

It is laughable when Romney lists all of the things he is going to do on Day One! He would not be the King, but one part of the Government – there are the other branches which have a say in what gets done. He doesn't just come in and "order" all these changes by himself and anyone who believes this doesn't understand how the government works. It is all talk but empty promises. Does he have any idea of what Day One is like? Politicians shouldn't be making these statements and misleading the public. He could say what he has in mind for the future and what he wants to try to change, but not promise it will be immediate. That is more honest!!

    Captain Moroni
We need values restored to America again.

    - Romney is married and faithful to his wife of over 40 years.

The previous 2 Repubs presidents were married faithful to their wives, the last president was supposed to restore family values and how did that work out for American in his 8 years in the WH?

    - 2 Wars
    - Countless of lies to build his case for war in Iraq
    - Didn't Care too much about the man that planned the 9/11 attacks and wasted money, resource and sacrifice countless of men and women in a War that was unnecessary
    - played on the fears of Americans with that stupid "Terror Alert" every so often, especially on long weekends, something you have seen since he won his 2nd term
    - Left America Bankrupt after the previous Democrat President left America in it best financial shape in half a century
    - America badly divided, even after when it was united after September 11, 2001
    - Greatest financial disaster since the Great Depression
    - Countless of months with close to $250k jobs loss
    - Lost respect of all of America's allies in the world

He will terminate ObamaCare his first day in office.....that means on that day young adults up to 27 going to college will all have to give up healthcare coverage on their parents' plan....an immediate drop in revenue for insurance companies and an immediate new pool of uninsured.....immediately rural hospitals will get no re-imbursement for uncovered E.R. visits, something that will probably put some rural hospitals out of business, since they will not be able to pass off the uninsured to anyone else....And of course, my favorite, children with life threatening diseases, such as cancer will be terminated from coverage, because they were only added on because insurers were forced to take on children with pre-existing conditions......This will be the most disgusting and damaging first day of a presidency in history...Even China, let alone the worlds' top 19 democracies, has a plan in place to cover over 90% of their population within 3 years....this is way beyond selfishness on steroids........next to the holocaust, this will be the most single most SELFISH event in the history of the world. Congratulations in advance to Romney for setting back the US by decades.........

The Keystone pipeline would make jobs for certain... The lawyers suing for all of the environmental and health damage done by the filty product would bring droves of people as would burial and cremation services. New cancer clinics would bring good-paying jobs to the area. The remediation efforts to clean the water tables, surface waters, and the soil contamination. Canada will also be grateful because they didn't want to move the nasty crap across their pristine lands.

    taken from someone else:
what romney says what romney means
approve keystone pipeline increase air and water pollution in places we don't even KNOW about yet
tax cuts that reward job creators distribute even MORE wealth to the top 1%
end obamacare take healthcare from 30 million people

regarding the second item ... why would a successful company need to be enticed to hire people?

I think Romney should also attach that if there is a spill from the Keystone pipeline the mormons would drink the spill as a communion from Joseph smith with the republican politicians partaking in it.

I am always astounded with the level of stupidity I see in these blogs. Why would anyone vote for Romney? He would go straight back to the policies of GWBush. Can’t anyone remember where that got us? Is everyone’s memory that short? Reward the job creators? They’ve been rewarded for years and where are the jobs? They are sitting on record profits now and not creating jobs. Obama has done a great job considering what he inherited and the absolute unyielding GOP whose main focus is not on the good of this nation, but on getting the presidency back so they can get rid of any oversight or regulation and go back to those policies that lined all their pockets and made the rich richer and the poor poorer. And they feed these poor slobs nothing but lies and distortions with one liners and soundbites and laugh at them for voting against their own best interests. It is so depressing.

blah blah blah. Day one, he will be trying to find the bathroom in which to hide from criticism. he will also find out that he is president and the legislative branch will have a lot to say if he gets any of his goals accomplished. In Obama's case, The GOP has done nothing but obstruct. also, he will find out that he is not a dictator and that he cannot say this will happen or that will happen. actually nothing will happen. Romney is a bs artist.

A Romney presidency will mean that women and minorities are marginalized. That our children's educations, are at the bottom and the Defense budget continues to soar at the expense of the poor, disabled and elderly.

No thanks! This registered Independent is supporting President Barack Obama!

How does Romney know that Obama's policies for the economy failed? The republicans refuse to pass any of his bills so the failure of the economy that they tanked is on them.

Since you are another mentally challenged moron let me say this AGAIN. The president is NOT asking the middle class and poor of this country for that kind of money. He is seeking it from the Hollywood elite or people in that upper income bracket who CAN afford to pay this kind of money, have NO problem paying more taxes and REALLY want their country to prosper again. (Now, I know it's hard for you to understand this – but he is not trying to take from the poor and give it to the 1%. Understand now?

How hard is this to understand? The oil from Canada HAS TO GO TO REFINERIES IN ILLINOIS NOW. Canada WILL NOT LET TRANSCANADA BUILD A PIPELINE TO THE PACIFIC THROUGH CANADA BECAUSE OF THEIR POOR ENVIRONMENTAL RECORD. Trucking the oil makes it too expensive to compete on the world market. Right now the U.S. gets a sweetheart deal on the oil because we ARE THE ONLY LOGICAL BUYER. They want to build the pipeline to.....(the name of the destination is a BIG HINT)... PORT ARTHUR TEXAS. The pipeline extension has ONE SINGLE PURPOSE. TO CREATE COMPETING FOREIGN BIDDERS FOR THE OIL. It will cost almost all Americans MORE MONEY FOR GAS. The couple of thousand jobs will cost taxpayers BILLIONS. The only Americans making money will be OIL SPECULATORS.
So why doesn't Obama say he doesn't want to approve it because of the cost to American who buy gas? Because it is AGAINST THE RULES OF OUR FREE TRADE AGREEMENT WITH CANADA TO DENY ACCESS TO TRANSPORTATION ROUTES INCLUDING Highways, Waterways, Air Routes and PIPELINES!!!!
ROMNEY himself said he is going to COST AMERICANS BILLIONS during his FIRST DAY IN OFFICE.
My God people. Educate yourselves. These people aren't trying to sell you all this B.S. because they think you're SMART!
