Romney castigates California

Hillsborough, N.H. (CNN) – Mitt Romney knows the chances of California going for him in November are slim, so why not call the state out as an example of economic policy gone awry?

A day after musing over a move to low-tax haven Florida, Romney–who owns a home in La Jolla, California–cast the Golden State as a cautionary tale for overtaxing and overspending.

On a Friday conference call he told swing-state voters that the 2012 election gave them a choice over the country's economic future.

"You could either be like the America that we've known in our past, which is having low taxes and high growth and a strong economy," Romney said. "Or you could try to be like California, where they raise taxes higher and higher and higher."

Romney said California's policies "scare away employers. They make it harder for entrepreneurs to grow and thrive in their state. And they have huge deficits. The deficits in California get worse and worse."

California's budget deficit has reached an eye-popping $16 billion, the state's governor acknowledged this week.

A day earlier, on Thursday, Romney told voters in Jacksonville, Florida that his wife Ann had a soft spot for the battleground Sunshine State.

"She has said someday, who knows, we might move to Florida," he said to cheers from the audience. "You never know. Someday, way down the road."

He later assured reporters that he and his wife "love California," but added: "There are attractions to Florida. It has the right tax rate, among others."

Florida does not levy a state income tax.

– CNN's Ashley Killough contributed to this report.

Apparently, CNN seems to have a massive, unprecedented dictionary of words in this censorship filter. Seriously, why?! If you care at all about free speech, you'll let this comment appear. CNN, I love you guys, BUT YOU NEED TO FIX THIS!!

Dear Mittens, we don't like you either. You can have sweaty-ass Florida, I'm sure they'll love ya! Buh-bye now.

You're a news organization. You should be utterly ashamed of your conduct in this matter.

You know what? I had a very thoughtful, multi-point comment about Romney's remarks that I was going to contribute to this discussion. But your censorship filter made doing so completely untenable. So I'm going to go post it over at MSNBC instead. Good day.

I hope to God Mitt & his family do go to Florida. I live here in Calif, born & raised. We don't like Mitt Romney and he'd be better off and certainly have a much happier life else where. theres only a handful of republicans here anyhow and they don't run anything that has any importance to the state anyhow. So if he starts trying to dictate here he is going to un-leash every PIT-BULL Californian and we will go for the juggler. So yea, he is better off going to Florida and hangin with Marco Rubio ( The LIAR ) and Allen West ( The Physco ). LOL..LOL...that should be right up his gutter.

Isn't California where all the rich, wealthy people live? So when they raise taxes higher, higher and higher it didn't work? Wow, they didn't see that one coming? I thought California was really educated.

Looky here, we already have Governor Lurch. We do not need you. Please stay away. The right tax breaks. Well isn't that special. Seems to me all Willard cares about is low taxes for the very richest amongst us and damn us little middle-class folks.

Yeah, California, the home of looney tune leader nancy Pelosi, with all of its wealth, rich people and astonomical tax rates is STILL a financial BASKETCASE thanks to the Democrats that have controlled the state legislature for decades. No matter how much they take from the people, they always find a way to spend twice as much.

The Democrats financial incompetence now threatens the country at a national level. Their ultimate dream for the USA is to become GREECE.

I don't see why everyone is upset that Romney can buy a house in every state or has a house in California.

Did you know what happened 162 years ago this fall... back in 1850?

    California became a state
    The people had no electricity.
    The state had no money.
    Almost everyone spoke Spanish.
There were gunfights in the streets.

So basically nothing has changed except then the women had real boobs and the men didn't hold hands.

That, my friends, is the history lesson for today!

Romney will probably not waste one cent in California. Why bother when it is overrun by leftist loons busy bankrupting the state? They wouldn't know what he is talking about when he talks about living within ones means. To people in California that means keeping spending down to 2.5 times what you take in.

""You could either be like the America that we've known in our past, which is having low taxes "

What was the top rate after WW2? 70%? 90%?

Does Etch-A-Sketch ever have the slightest clue what he is talking about?

Well, Mittens, if you do manage to pull a win out of your hat, you'll be president of the United States and that includes California. We won't forget your hateful comments.

I guess he must be aiming this comment at the Governator who is a republican that over spent and raised the taxes. He was too busy sleeping with the help to worry about state affairs. Nothing but a hypocrit like the rest of his GOP gang. Mittens I want to see your transcript from Harvard, your birth certificate, your taxes and your cayman accounts. You don't hear your gang screaming for that. Let's keep it real GOP. You have hounded President Obama for four years about this, I want to see your nominees credentials. Also we know why you don't want to bring up religion, you spineless human. You are nothing but a S. Palin in a man's body. She did have convictions, which you do not have at all.

Yeah and Mitt's grandfather lived in Mexico with his polygamist family because he was persecuted in the United States. Willard Romney needs to retire to Nauvoo, Illinois and wait for his polygamist Jesus Christ or go to Salt Lake City and kiss his statues of Brigham Young the polygamist. I still want to see these gold tablets of Joseph Smith. Do they condon beatting a Gay man and cutting off his hair ? In California that is assault and a hate crime.

  24. The REAL Truth...

@Bryan – We had 55 straight months of economic growth under W...Obama would love to have a fraction of that. The MSM loves to forget that point, as well as the fact that the housing crisis was created by Fannie and Freddie under DEMOCRAT/Barney Frank et al. (mis)management.
    ------------------------–
So while we had that "55 straight months of economic growth under W" of which you speak, we had TWO unfunded wars going on... whose costs would have plunged us into immediate recession had they been on the books. Obama go those on the books, which accounts for over $3T of his expenditures.
Once again, you neocons have an amnesiac, conveniently revisionist version of history. The housing crisis was NOT caused by Fannie and Freddie. It was caused by GS – whose subsidiaries packaged and re-sold ninja and other worthless mortgages bundled with some good ones. GS then hedged on known-bad bundles those by insuring against their failure with AIG. Fannie/Freddie being lender of last resort were unaware of the bundling and took the hit when AIG collapsed. This in turn, led to Dubya's $850B bank bailout to shore up as system that basically f*ked itself over!
And who initiated TARP? None other than former GS CEO and Treas. Sec Paulson.
    Please check your FACTS!
