Romney mocks 'bridge to nowhere'

Hillsborough, New Hampshire (CNN) – Mitt Romney stood in front of a so-called "bridge to nowhere" Friday and mocked President Obama's stimulus program for failing struggling Americans.

"That's your stimulus dollars at work: A bridge that goes nowhere," Romney told roughly 150 supporters, then generalized his criticism of the stimulus program. "It is without question the largest one-time careless expenditure of government money in American history."

The city of Hillsborough received $150,000 in federal stimulus funds to restore historic Sawyer Bridge, which was built in the 1800s and spans a babbling brook.

But no cars have traversed the bridge in more than 20 years – in fact, it does not connect to any roads.

On Friday Romney quoted the Obama administration as defending its $787 billion reinvestment program against charges its price tag was too high for the number of jobs it would actually create.

"So they said 'yeah, but we put in place a whole series of elements that are critical to the future of America,'" he said, referencing the stone bridge behind him. "And you got one back there."

Meanwhile, supporters of the bridge project point to its historic value and say the restoration was overwhelmingly supported by New Hampshire's legislature - including some lawmakers who are now backing Romney - earlier this decade.

Romney's appearance in New Hampshire was the third time in several weeks the GOP candidate has visited. Campaign advisers say they see a real shot at winning the state where Romney has a summer home and deep ties in Republican circles.

Obama easily won New Hampshire in 2008, and an Obama campaign source told CNN the president's path to victory in the fall would likely require putting it again in the Democratic column.

–CNN Senior Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash contributed to this report.

Romney, what would you have done differently in California and in the economy beside your determination to fire as many workers as possible.

You listen to this guy and you can't help but think that if he were elected, we would have another George Bush in the White House. There goes the economy. But hey, the 1% will get their tax break and the rest of us will get the shaft.

Romney's attack on the $288,000 bridge restoration will run into several immediate challenges: Funding for the project was overwhelmingly supported by state Republicans, including a significant number who have now endorsed Romney for president. The infrastructure project created much-needed jobs during tough economic times. And it left behind a public park enjoyed by Granite State residents who take great pride in their early-American and colonial history - and who will be casting critical, swing-state votes in November.

It's a curious breed of conservatism that would find offense in the job-creating conservation of a stone arch bridge that is one of the earliest examples of dry-laid masonry vaults in New England.

The project was championed by 28 New Hampshire Republicans who now support Romney's presidential campaign.

This guy really needs a new research team.

Would the right wingnuts calm down if our president promised to start more unnecessary wars with no money, give bigger tax breaks to big oil and the wealthy with no way to offset the loss of revenue, or will they be happy if we give more money to Wall Street and big banks?

If Romney is going to make a practice of mocking the symbols of local history and objects of local pride in every small town where he speaks then I would guess President Obama will have no trouble winning again in New Hampshire and everywhere else as well.

Wasn't the actual "Bridge to Nowhere" (actually to a small island with an equally small airport on it) a Palin proposal funded by the Bush Congess to the tune of several million dollars? $150,000 isn't much compared to that.

I'm glad Romney pointed this out because the Governor of NH is a Democrat, but wait until we take a look at the Republican Governors and what they've done with stimulous money. This will blow up in Romney's face and it won't be the bridge to nowhere.

Funny thing is, this historic bridge renovation (done for what is less than a drop in the federal budget) was overwhelmingly supported by Republican in that state. Wonder how they feel about being mocked by the leader of their party?

$288K ?? You might need a loan from the chinese to cover that, but that amount doesn't even blip the meter compared the $THREE TRILLION+ that Dubya's illegal wars have cost this country. Perhaps you can go hat in hand to the Chinese to cover that little piece of insanity.. Nah.. I thought not!

Wow. You really need to grow up. You complain about Obama shutting down something that cost billions upon billions of dollars per year, and which therefore no longer costs us that, by trying to spin it into a bad move that is costing us millions? Beyond the pale even for you, champ. What a lying load of steaming malarky.

"...It is without question the largest one-time careless expenditure of government money in American history..." Is Romney talking about a bridge; or is he talking about Bush and the Republican's Crimes Against Humanity?

Romney should have put some of that $150K that he donated to himself to buy himself a pair of balls; each day he sounds more and more like a jaded little girl.

You mean after they "enjoy" paying for the obnoxious $640B defense budget to "nowhere" if Romney wins, and paying

    Thought so.

What are his specific plans for deficit reduction, Medicare, Social Security, immigration, energy sustainability, environmental stewardship, and healthcare reform. He tells us what he doesn't like and gives us the party-line to "lower taxes, leverage the free-market, and help the job creators". It's all B.S. Do you plan to follow the Paul Ryan Plan? Do you plan to trash Medicare? Do you have any actual vision?
