Voters split between Obama and Romney on top three issues

(CNN) - A survey released Monday showed Americans split over which presidential contender would best handle the issues they consider the most pressing, saying President Barack Obama would best tackle health care costs while Republican Mitt Romney was better poised to slash the federal debt and deficit.

The poll, from Gallup, asked Americans to assess the importance of various economic issues. Of the ten-item list, 84% said the cost of health care was extremely or very important, the highest of any of the topics. Both unemployment and the federal debt were seen as extremely or very important by 82% of respondents.

Asked which presidential candidate would better handle health care costs, 51% named Obama, compared to 44% who said Romney. On the federal debt and deficit, the advantage was Romney's: 54% said the former Massachusetts governor would best tackle the problem, compared to 39% who named Obama.

On unemployment, the two candidates were statistically tied. Forty-eight percent said Obama was the best candidate to handle unemployment, compared to 47% who named Romney.

Both candidates had big advantages on other economic issues. More Americans said Romney would better handle the performance of savings and retirement accounts, 53% to 39%. But when asked which candidate would better handle living standards for poor Americans, Obama had a 28-point advantage over Romney, 62% to 34%.

The Gallup poll was taken by phone from 1,012 adults between May 10 and May 13. The sampling error was plus or minus four percentage points.

Yeah, he's established 8% unemployment as the new "norm". Great accomplishment. The only way the rate has come down is by frustrating workers OUT of the workforce and onto the government dole. And all it has cost us is another $5 TRILLION in debt that our kids and grand kids will have to pay for, but Obama sure doesn't tell THAT to the naive dummies when he cons them with his university campaign appearances.

  2. Etch-a-Sketch Mitt Is Soo Plastic he Makes Mannequins Looks Real

Etch-a-Sketch Mitt Romney is already running campaign ads promising to payback his rich fat cat buddies aka "JOB CREATORS" more TAX CUTS on top of the GW BUSH TAX CUTS....thereby exploding the deficits in TRILLIONS of $$$$!!!

The only JOBS Etch-a-Sketch Mitt will be creating is for himself and his five sons, then making Ann Romney to drive a couple more cadillacs and wearing $1000 blouses for being a stay-at-home mom, and completing his car garage elevators for his California beach front home, while wind-surfing like John Kerry, and banking more of his tax-cuts US dollar$$$ in Swiss Bank accounts and the CAYMEN ISLAND!!!!

Etch-a-Sketch Mitt Romney is NOT a JOB CREATOR...he is a VULTURE CAPITALIST AND A TAX EVADER!!!!!

I can't see how people can think Romney is better for the country when he has five(5) adult sons who don't serve the country in uniform but wear their suits to campaign for their father. This family is more "self serving" than "Nation serving". Wakeup out there people.

So did you vote for McCain in 2008 or Obama? You're a joke. Posting this rubbish only proves it.

Romney is weak and would be a puppet for the extremist of the Republican party. The Republican party wants to force their believes and view on everyone else. If the GOP had their way we'd be in a depression instead of coming out of a recession.

    @ yobi

So what you say is that Romney was successfull at doing his job? He created Bain Capital as a businessman. A businessman's job is to create profit for themselves and their investors. He did his job extraordinarily well. If his job was to create an environment that allows american companies to hire new American workers he would do that well also. If real Americans were that concerned about overseas jobs they wouldn't forward their paychecks to companies like Apple who is doing quite well. If Obama and the DOE were that concerned with it they wouldn't allow schools to buy billions of dollars for Ipads and such using federal funding.

And this is the number that matters. We don't need an elitist in the White House who doesn't understand what it;s like for people at the bottom. It all boils down to who understands the needs of the middle class. And it most certainly is not 1% Mitt.

What is the definition of the word "poor"? In America, it is somebody with an LCD TV less than 40". The government has spent $15 TRILLION on the war on poverty and yet there are about the same number of "poor" people. The definition keeps shifting to ensure there is always "poor" in America. And as long as the southern border remains open, millions more poor invade our country, which we end up paying for. Maybe we can just annex all of central America and Mexico and simply this process?
