Arizona secretary of state closes Obama birth certificate matter

(CNN) - Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett wrote in a statement Wednesday his office had received the necessary information about President Barack Obama's birth certificate to put the matter to rest.

"Late yesterday, our office received the 'verification in-lieu of certified copy' from officials within the Hawaii Department of Health that we requested in March," Bennett wrote. "They have officially confirmed that the information in the copy of the Certificate of Live Birth for the President matches the original record in their files."

Bennett said last week that he may refuse to put the president on the ballot in November unless the state of Hawaii authenticated Obama's birth certificate, the long form of which the White House released in April 2011.

Bennett, a co-chairman of likely GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney's Arizona campaign, said he was only doing so at the request of his constituents.

"As Arizona's chief elections officer, I have the responsibility to certify the ballot to the state's 15 counties," Bennett wrote in Wednesday's statement. "At the request of numerous constituents, I merely asked Hawaiian officials to verify the information contained within President Obama's original birth certificate. They have complied with the request and I consider the matter closed."

– CNN's Peter Hamby contributed to this report.

This issue is just plain crazy. Period. If Obama was a white male we should not have being talking about all this birth certificate issue. God help us all Americans to love each other, to know that All are created equal

It's that pronounced brow ridge common to most troglodytes that does it. The tinfoil hats just never sit quite at the right angle.

Bennett is a birther and is behind a birther bill the Azizona legislature passed. Governor Brewer, bad as she is, voted. So far he has refused to vertify Mittens birth certificate.

Maybe it wouldn't have been an issue if the POTUS himself hadn't been claiming he was born in Kenya as recently as 2004, and possibly 2007 according to his literary agent. Most likely he benefitted from being a more "authentic" minority when it served his purposes (odd that he won't release any school records, isn't it?). But the ignorant commenters here can be forgiven, they don't know about any of this if they've been gobbling up the selected information that CNN and MSNBC feed them. Wise up, little lib robots.

Someone please explain to me as to how a state and local official can send their local officials over to another state in order to investigate a sitting president's birth certificate? Just when you think Arizona can't sink any lower, they prove you wrong. I agree with another blogger, all those who participated in this should be sued for wasting tax payers' money on personal biases. I guess if you can't win fairly, you try and cheat your way to victory. Just another strike against a state who has already fouled out.

It is funny for the rest of the world to see how the US does stuff like this. Ever wonder if antics like these are one of the symptoms of the illness that have been causing America to lose its international competetivness?

Now – is he willing to go to the same lengths to verify Romney's qualifications – if not there is no defending this as anything but racism.

I want to know why the most corrupt Sheriff in America is STILL sending his thugs to Hawaii on the tax payers dime, calling it a "security issue". Arpaio is not following Bennett's rule I guess, but then again, Corrupt Joe has never done things by the way of the law, so why stop now. Bennett works for the Romney camp as well, which is a violation of his duties, no one is mentioning that outside of AZ. Both Bennett and Arpaio need to go!!!

So, that "claiming he was born in Kenya" thing, is that one of those facts that only racist Republicans know? Because I'm pretty sure more than enough people have proven otherwise. Unless, Hangar13, you know something that no one else in the WORLD knows! You are so special! And I mean that you deserve a blue parking decal.
