Borger: Will Obama's attacks on Romney backfire?

Editor's note: Gloria Borger is CNN's chief political analyst, appearing regularly on shows such as "AC360°", "The Situation Room," "John King, USA" and "State of the Union."

(CNN) - As the presidential campaign veers off onto the Bain Capital ramp, the predictable arguments ensue: Is the turn simply a political attack meant to distract from bad economic news? (So says Mitt Romney). Or is it an important, valid argument at the heart of the contest? (So says President Barack Obama.)

Distill all the arguments down to an essential core, and they're really about one thing: experience. As in, does past experience matter? Is it an indicator of future behavior? Or of your values? And if you behaved one way at another job in your past, what does that tell us about how you would behave as president? Finally, should your previous experience (or lack of it) in any way disqualify you from the presidency?

Romney needs to be called out for everything he claims. It is fair game. Negative ads work and people are talking about Romney's terrible record at Bain and as Governor.

Keep the attacks coming. It is going to be fun watching it.

Before Mayor Booker opened his mouth, I would have been fully confident that the attacks would not backfire. Now, the conservative spin masters have something to distract attention and divert focus away from the central issue. The ads are attempting to force Romney's hand and produce some facts to back up his claim of 100,000 while *at* Bain.

  8. The REAL Truth...

I'm still waiting to hear what it is that Mittens plans to do as President !! He doesn't know, or flip-flops daily. I'm sure he's a nice guy, family man and all that but business knowledge does not make him more qualified as a candidate. Govt does not equal business – as proven by his Bain record and that of MA (47th in job creation).
His oft-touted business knowledge did not serve him as MA Gov did it? That's more GOP marketing... not reality!

Mittens put it in play. He doesn't get to make whatever claims he wants with impugnity. All this really amounts to is people pretending like Mittens should never be challenged on the accuracy and truthfulness of what he claims...and the MSM is selling this nonsense because they don't want him vetted. After all, he promised massive tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. Give you one guess whether the people in the MSM writing this tripe on a daily basis are blue collar middle-class.

  10. Obama 2012 - BEND Forward America, take another 4 long years of FAILURE

They are ALREADY back firing! Romney has an ad out there with THREE DEMOCRATS agreeing with Romney NOT Obama!!

And dimwitted Obama and his campaign advisors expect the American people to believe that what Romney did for companies was different than what Obama did for GM. This is pretty pathetic and if Obama is paying money for this type of advice, he is being played for an imbecile, which we all now know he is.

Your vernacular is reminiscent of "Ebonics", which means your remark is borderline racist.

I should point out that most of the recipients of welfare and other entitlements are not minorities. Most of the money spent on entitlement programs go to the red states, not the blue states. In fact, almost all of the red states receive more federal dollars than what their citizens pay in federal taxes, while the exact opposite is true for the blue states.

Most conservatives live in red states, and most conservatives love to complain about lazy people living off of a government check. Many times they even complain about how they have seen people do it and get away with it. But, what most conservatives don't realize is that they are actually being crticial of the neighbors, fellow citizens of their home red state, and their fellow conservatives.

Bain is a key arguement. Romney has touted his experience as the reason that he should be president. He has stated that he can do a better job, and that the recovery from the bottom under Obama has not been satisfactory. Well, dude, you better be prepared to put some meat on those bones. Any fool can say I can do a better job. The trick is to convince us.

I think his hamburger is a little short on the beef part of the bull and more in line with the typical "bull....".

If Obama, or Biden, applied for DEO at Bain, or the Olympics, the application would be framed and put on a wall for laughs. But they would not get the job.

  16. The Greedy Old Pigs declared class war on US!

It's pretty funny how the conservative media is rushing to deflect attention from Bain. The problem for them is that exposes the hidden corruption of our current crony capitalist system that feeds the greedy and starves the needy. All their cult lies and nonsense about free markets and small government are exposed when Rmoney is revealed to be a corporate welfare queen and vampire capitalist who worked the system for his advantage while shafting workers and taxpayers. The elites do now want the rest of us to know about their big secrets.

What will backfire is the facade that Romney has created for himself as being a job creator. Romney has a proven track record of failure on governing at the state level. Massachusetts is proof of his failed policies.

This is good news for John McCain!

Sorry, flashback to the 2008 election.

I'm guaranteeing right now that the media (including Borger and all the talking heads on cable) will declare Romney the winner of all the debates, just as they declared McCain the winner of all the debates in 2008. Then when the polls came out showing the public thought Obama won... they all struggled to explain and justify.

Mark it. Every successful Obama parry against Romney will be questioned as to whether it will "backfire" (none of Romney's attacks will get the same treatment). And Romney will be declared the "winner" of the debates, until the public weighs in.

I could write this script blindfolded.

People need to know the truth about Romney. Let his record at BAIN speak for itself. Do an assessment of jobs created under his tenure and see what the real numbers are.

    The REAL Truth...
...His oft-touted business knowledge did not serve him as MA Gov did it?
    ____________________________________________________________________________________________
In fact it did. He eliminated a $1.5 billion deficit and instituted universal health care. His success in MA and his success at Bain will both be advantages in what he brings as President. We need success, not what Obama is bringing; excuses and personal attacks.

  22. Mr. 1% the "VULTURE CAPITALIST BUSINESSMAN" would outsource the poor, disabled, unemployed and elderly to China and sell America to the highest bidder!

No, Ms. Borger, it will not "backfire" as long as the following scenario is true.

"No one believes Bain is a bad company, just stop using your previous "business" acumen as a reason to be President of all the people.

The business experience is about making a profit for your shareholders, and screw those that get in the way of that goal.

Not a desirable "accomplishment" in a President, when you must then deal with the folks that got in the way, and cutting unemployment benefits or vouchers to Medicare or cutting food stamps, is not the way a compassionate person or a President deals with the "cast-offs".

Actually, why are you NOT running on your former governor experience as a way to "create jobs"??

Oops, MA was 47th in job creation under your tenure as governor, never mind, I think I answered my own question.

OK, what about your plans to replace Obamacare?

    Oh wait, silly me."

Good article. I agree with Gloria Borger that it is #1 Experience which Obama had none when he became President and we all know this, nothing new. Romney on the other hand was a Governor, businessman. #2 Past Experience, well Obama said he used pot, cocaine, was lazy in school and pushed a little girl down to the ground, what does that say about Obama? And we can't criticize Obama's work record because there really isn't one for the fact that he's never ran a business or worked for a business, he's never been an employee.
