Romney releases new Memorial Day video

(CNN) - Ahead of Mitt Romney's Memorial Day appearance with Sen. John McCain in California Monday, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee released a new web video thanking military troops and veterans.

"A lot of young Americans are risking their lives in distant battlefields today," Romney said in a statement. "Memorial Day is a day to give thanks to them, and to remember all of America's soldiers who have laid down their lives to defend our country. As we enjoy our barbecues with friends and families and loved ones, let's keep them in our thoughts and in our prayers."

Romney will attend an event with McCain, who was held as a prisoner of war for more than five years in Vietnam, at the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center in San Diego, California.

"I am honored to be celebrating Memorial Day this year with John McCain. I don't have to tell John's story; the world already knows it. But it is what today's holiday is all about: sacrifice, valor, honor, courage, and love of country," Romney said.

I'm the same age as Mitt. When he was in an elite prep school committing assault and battery , I was in Viet-Nam. This man is a complete phony. When he had an opportunity to serve his contry, he didn't.

Poor Mitt. Just can't seem to get it right can he, no matter how hard he panders? Perhaps had he NOT used John McCain this video COULD have been seen as a thank you to our troops fighting in those "distant" battlefields which one assumes Mitt to mean Afghanistan. Dragging McCain in ends up reducing it to simple pander, for both McCain AND Mitt Romney.

And on Memorial Day no less. Shame, shame.

I will go for the devil I know and not that one am not sure of. Mitt, you are paused to initiate more wars which will cost the country more money and more lives will be lost for sure. What about your talk of deficit? How are you going to balance these two (wars & deficit)?

    Hey Obama supporters,

Lay off Mitt Romney's sons. It is against their faith to take a life, even in war! They are Christian and the Bible says "Thou shall not kill" so they are living up to that command. Other faiths also do not go to war.

Of course, Mitten will say any thing to hope he will gets elected. He is so pathetic. How about explain off-shore bank accounts to the brave men and women while they are fighting for our freedom and country. Sorry Mitten, the American voters are much smarter than your phony lies.

I am pretty well burnt out on smiling politicians professing how grateful they are for our troops when they send them off to die without just cause!!! Political retort is not a reason to send sons and daughters to war. Perhaps a Romney type president should learn to use diplomatic channels when conflicts arise....however this would require intellect and reason!!! Not I'll blow you off the face of the earth if you don't do as I say!!!

So, does this mean that as President, Mitt Romney would recuse himself from sending other sons and daughters to war? Who, then, defends us from our enemies? And who, then, would be making the Commander in Chief decisions Mitt wouldn't be able to make ... as a Christian who cannot take a life? His VP?

It's a shame that someone cannot praise others without being mocked from every direction. Is it really so bad to thank the troops when you yourself haven't served? By mocking Romney for not serving, you devalue the service of those who went. You are saying those who went were compelled to go because they were not wealthy or because they did not have religious excuses. I choose to believe that those who served and continue to serve are a select group of Patriotic Men and Women who made sacrifices that many of us can only imagine making. I will not tear down those who didn't serve, but I will praise those who did.

    @Former Obama supporter:
"..it is against their faith to take a life, even in war"----–?????
But it's OK for MItt to declare war, invade countries (Iran, Syria) and send others to "take a life"??
And, if it is "against their faith", did his sons declare "conscientious objector" status? Mitt says they were
serving their country by campaigning for him for President (that is, the first time he ran).
Everyone will keep that in mind as we visit the various cemeteries and participate in the ceremonies of
remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

I'm a veteran and i'm supporting our president. What i dont understand is what has obama done in the last four years that people are against. he brought wars to an end(how much money is that saving us)he captured bin laden, things are improving , slowly but things are getting better, unfortunately he cant control the rest of the world, the republicans will go back to trickle down economics and we saw how that worked, companies just put their jobs overseas, no private industry will create jobs here except if they can pay no taxes and pay 12 dollars a day, i am in a tax bracket where romney would be a better choice for my personal gain but i think we need to look at the whole population not just ourselves, when did we become so greedy and narrowminded? we went from a country that the world envied to one that is ridiculed around the world, for those of you who dont believe that , travel a bit. i for one think president obama is on the right track, unfortuantely he tries to appease the far right who are terrorist in their own right.

It's a good thong to prose the fine men and women of our country who choose to serve in our military. What they do is very honorable ....the point is political opportunism by "leaders" who don't really weigh the seriousness of their words.

Oh! And, by the way, I read in the paper a couple of days ago that when young people were protesting the draft, I think in the late sixties, he was on the other side protesting against them! And then he dodged the draft and went to France! And now he has 5 sons... none of them have served! The nerve of this man to criticize our President for his handling with anything.

sbssue1: Yes, he is bringing everyone home in an orderly way. You cannot be irresponsible when you leave a country which we invaded. We have some responsibility to the people of the country. That's what's happening!!

HELLO!!! Wake up dems. Obama is just as much of a war monger as W Bush was. Obama is pushing us into Syria and Iran. Obama attacked Lybia. Obama assassinates people illegally with predator drones. Obama is giving us the NDAA and has expanded the patriot act. I remember his promises to end the wars. I remember the democrats cheering him on for it. Ever since Obama assassinated Bin Laden it seems the dems are all suddenly bloodthirsty pro war hypocrites. The whole democratic party makes me sick. Especially the mindless Obama drones who follow this idiot failure of a president no matter what promises he breaks, or what laws he breaks. The republicans are fighting to have a true anti war president and it isn't Mitt Romney.
