Poll: Obama way ahead in California

(CNN) – A new poll released Tuesday shows President Barack Obama with a wide lead in California, a state the president won by a landslide in 2008, along with its whopping 55 electoral votes.

According to the USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll, Obama carries a 19-point advantage over Republican rival Mitt Romney, 56%-37%, a lead that comes as little surprise in the traditionally blue state.

The survey, however, gives insight into voter attitudes in California and reveals big margins for Obama across a number of the state's demographic groups, such as women, Latinos and independents.

Among women, who make up 53% of the state's voting population, about six in 10 prefer Obama, amplifying national trends that indicate a gender gap between the president and Romney, although some recent national polls suggest Romney is picking up support among women.

As for California's Latinos, Obama has overwhelming support from the voting bloc with 75%, compared to Romney at 18%. Among independents, he also fares better against his likely opponent, 46%-37%.

Latinos and independents each represent 20% of the state's voters. The Times' analysis notes that George H. W. Bush was the last Republican candidate to win California (in 1988), prior to the state's surge in Latino and independent voters.

The survey also shows a lack of enthusiasm for Romney among GOP voters. Of those who said they would vote for the candidate, 51% said their choice was more of a vote against Obama than a vote in support of the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.

And just weeks after Obama made a groundbreaking announcement that he supported same-sex marriage, three-fourths of voters said the issue was not a major issue this cycle, despite the topic being a heavy point of contention in California politics with the ongoing fight over Proposition 8.

The USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times Poll, was conducted by Democratic polling firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner and Republican polling firm American Viewpoint between from May 17 and May 21. The full sample of 1,002 registered voters interviewed by phone has a sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Hey, the latest is that Romney says that Obama is personally attacking him – this before he goes to a findraiser with Donald Trump You couoldn't make this stuff up. Is Romney so obtuse he does not get the irony of what he is saying?

I will happily start collecting money to send the person who called California a "Hell Hole" and anyone else who thinks that way.......to any state of your choice as long as you leave. We are proud of our state even if it has problems as does any other right. now.. If it's so bad why do people keep moving here in droves. There isn't a state in the union without problems at this time. Some of the southern states I wouldn't ever want to be a part of....but California has it all,, good and bad, so why don't you just leave and take the bad with you??YOU WON'T BE MISSED!!!!

But thanks to the antiquated system of the Electoral College the least populated states will elect our next President. Not of, by, or for the people but of, by, and for the best money can buy. It's ironic that I still vote as a symbol of what America once was, but I'm am very well aware that thanks to Chief Justice John Roberts we are no longer a representative democratic republic but a monied plutocracy.

"No, actually we prefer to see a 20% federal tax cut for every working American paid for by improving efficiencies of the expensive bureaucratic nightmare that the federal government has become. "

Mittens' plan would explode the federal deficit and shift massive spending even further towards defense contractors and th emilitary industrial comlpex, all while cutting and gutting programs that help the poor, sick, middle-class, etc., and repealing and replacing Medicare with Ryan's CouponCare Crapshoot. The numbers don't lie. Adopting Deputy Doublethink's tax plans would actually increase tax liability for people making under $40K while virtually eliminating taxes for the 1%. The numbers don't lie. Tax cuts for the exobritantly wealthy do not trickle down to the unwashed masses and create magical double-rainbow economic supergrowth that actually increases government revenue past what the previous tax rate generated. History doesn't lie. Yuo want to talk efficiency? Look what Obama has done to combat Medicare fraud or the ABSOLUTE FACT that government spending increased during his presidency at the lowest rate in 60 years.

    Holly in CA
It's shocking really. Our gas and food prices are the highest in the country, so is our unemployment. Housing has fallen to a new low with record foreclosures. Teacher, Police, and Firefighter layoffs are rampant. And yet, Californians will still vote Democrat.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________
On top of that Holly, our Governor is trying to raise taxes again using his favorite excuse of, " saving education". He's like a mini-Obama, trying to tax CA out of the problem high taxes helped create in the first place.

Well what do you expect from those losers in California. They never support anything thats good. Thats their kind of lifestyle so I do not expect anything better from them. Obama is the worst nightmare this country has ever had so of course they will support him. Thats why the state is so broke....nothing good coming out of there.
