Axelrod: 'I like our math'

(CNN) – The same day a new poll showed the presidential race in a dead heat across three major battleground states, President Barack Obama's top campaign adviser remained confident that the numbers will line up for the president in November.

"I like our math in terms of getting to that 270, but we're going to have to fight hard," David Axelrod said Thursday, referring to the number of electoral votes needed to win the election.

Edwards gets acquittal on one count, mistrial on others

Greensboro, North Carolina (CNN) - Two-time Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards took responsibility for "my sins," including an affair that resulted in a "precious" daughter, after his federal corruption case ended in an acquittal and mistrial Thursday.

Prosecutors had accused the onetime North Carolina senator of using nearly $1 million in illegal campaign contributions to keep his pregnant mistress under wraps as he ran for president in 2008. But after more than 50 hours of deliberations over nine days, jurors cleared him of one of six counts and deadlocked on the rest.

Three presidents gather for Bush portrait unveiling

Washington (CNN) - There were smiles, laughter and tears - but little politics - when former Presidents George W. Bush and his father, George H. W. Bush, joined current President Barack Obama at the White House for the unveiling Thursday of the younger Bush's official portrait.

An emotional ceremony in the East Room saw the new White House residents thanking their predecessors for their service to the nation and for helping them out during the move more than three years ago.

House rejects abortion ban based on sex of fetus

Washington (CNN) – Congress took up one of the most divisive issues in politics Thursday as the House of Representatives rejected a controversial measure banning abortions based on the sex of a fetus.

In the House, 246 representatives backed the bill while 168 voted against it, leaving the proposal short of the two-thirds total necessary for passage. Most Republicans supported the measure; the majority of Democrats opposed it.

Rowdy news conference pumps up presidential campaign

(CNN) - A raucous news conference Thursday in Mitt Romney's home state of Massachusetts, with pro-Romney demonstrators trying to shout down campaigners for President Barack Obama criticizing the former governor, escalated the November election campaign more than five months before the voting.

Romney, meanwhile, traveled to a shuttered solar panel maker Thursday to focus attention on what he called a symbol of the Obama administration's failed economic policies, as well as cronyism.

Portman says nation not looking for 'pizzazz'

(CNN) - Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, who political observers often cite as a potential running mate for White House contender Mitt Romney, said Thursday voters were no longer looking for sparks when selecting a presidential candidate.

Portman, speaking from Israel after a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was asked by CNN Chief Political Analyst Gloria Borger whether his perceived lack of "pizzazz" would prevent him from being selected as a vice presidential candidate.

Romney makes surprise visit to Solyndra

Fremont, California (CNN) - In a tightly-guarded surprise campaign stop, Mitt Romney visited failed energy company Solyndra Thursday and invoked the building as a symbol of what he called President Obama's misuse of taxpayer dollars.

The visit - kept a secret by the campaign until shortly before the candidate and the press arrived at the site - offered a hulking visual to accompany Romney’s repeated criticism of Obama over the Solyndra scandal.
