Cigarette showdown as Californians vote on tax

(CNN) - California voters Tuesday will decide on Proposition 29, a proposed tax on cigarettes that spiraled into a $60 million battle

The new law would raise taxes on every pack of cigarettes by $1, yielding an estimated $735 million a year for the state. About three-quarters of that would go to cancer research.

    I guess there are people dumb enough to believe it will actually go to what they say it will.

    GULLIBLE.

    "The money is going to be invested in cancer research here in California and on tobacco prevention and cessation programs to protect kids and reduce smoking here in California."
    ==================================================================================
    Ahhhh! There's the favorite word of the left again.... "invested". Yes, your money is no longer yours, it is a "tax expenditure" and they no longer SPEND money, they "invest" it in companies like Solyndra, or pretend to take it for stuff like this AND THEN SPEND IT ON OTHER THINGS. That is exactly what they did with their 911 registration plates.

    As if California doesn' thave enough economic problems?! The looney left running the state won't be happy until they run every company and person right out of the state with this tax, tax, tax, spend, spend, spend with no end insanity.

    Actually 50 cents of every dollar goes to childrens education programs. Also California is paying the lowest tax rates on tobacco. This tax would bring it up to what other states have.

    It will never fly. I'm all for cancer research and donate regularly and I am not a smoker except a cigar or two when I am playing golf. But this is bad government. This is getting ridiculous with tax greed. I wish our elected officials would spend as much effort running government efficiently as they do searching for new taxes.

    And yet the kids education is no better, more dropouts, etc. More money will not fix what ails the schools.

    And yes, it is very important that California have the highest tax rates in ALL categories. Even that won't be enough to save the state from disaster. Remember, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. The federal government will NOT be bailing your sorry rears out of your self made financial quagmire.

    Hey California, don't wanna pay the extra $$$, quit smoking! You'll feel better, smell better and experience an improved sense of taste/smell. There, problem solved.

    Bend, the education is on the health dangers and education into not starting smoking. It is not designated for a classroom and has nothing to do with kids dropping out.
    As for the tax, it is about the Tobacco tax rate. California is still lower in that rate than most states.

    California pays the lowest amount of taxes on tobacco? I find it hard to believe that the states elected officials would allow the citizens of that state to pay the lowest amount than any other state.

    ======================================================================================
    Seriously?????????? This is just shear liberal stupidity. Who the heck on this planet doesn't already know smoking is bad for you and may kill you? All the money in the world can't cure stupid. This is all just wasted money if that is what it is going to, but somehow I doubt that is where it will end up, just like the plate money.

    =======================================================================
    So what! How many other taxes does California have? Their state income tax rate goes as high as 10.3%! For many it is 8% and 9.3%!! These rates are double and triple of other states. How are the property tax rates there? Most likely outrageous as well. California, the epitomy of the Democrat TAX RUSH STATE.

    Four, the article says it already is at 87 cents. It is going up by $1.
    For the lowest rate, there are some states that have a tax rate of 2 or 3 dollars. California will be at 1.87 if this passes.
    Read the research if you need answers.

    It is a better use of tax payer dollars than $4 billion in subsidies to big oil.
    It is a better use of tax payer dollars than allowing multi-national corporations to deduct foreign taxes off their US taxes.

    I say put a $5.00 tax on a pack of smokes, a gallon of gas, and a six pack of beer. In exchange, legalize marijuana and tax that as well. This is not an invasion of rights, its been well precredented that "sin tax" is an effective way to limit destructive behavior. You have the right to destroy yourself and your environment; its just gonna cost ya.

    Why don't they just eliminate cigarettes like Bloomberg is eliminating 16oz fluid sugary beverage? Bloomberg is doing it in the name of obesity, cigarettes can be done in the name of cancer and cancer from second hand smoking.

    More Rudy NYC lies.... The federal government does NOT give the oil companies $4 billion as a subsidy for ANYTHING. The oil companies claim valid expenses of doing business as do all businesses.

    And taxes paid to other governments are again, valid expenses of doing business in those countries and should be deducted as an expense since that money is taken from the company and is not income after expenses.

    Rudy, your ridiculous claims would have companies responsible for taxes on $1 million if that entire income was paid in taxes to another country! No company on earth could survive that insanity. Your posts are getting more and more ridiculous over time.

    It may increase but not by $1 due to cancer researchers feel they will lose money because less people will buy cigs.

    Everyone calls the money paid to oil companies "subsidies" except you. Part of the money is a refund on the land that they lease, when they do not use it. That is ridiculous. If they do not drill, then they do not have to pay anything.

    Corporations move manufacturing overseas, where they pay taxes, and then deduct it off of their US taxes. That tax deduction is what led to the destruction of over 9 million US manufacturing jobs over the past decade.
