Crossroads ad slams Obama over debt

Washington (CNN) - An independent group co-founded by Karl Rove says it's going up with a new TV commercial that claims that President Barack Obama has failed to address the nation's massive debt.

Crossroads GPS said Tuesday it will spend $7 million to run the ad, titled "Stopwatch," in 10 battleground states over the next two weeks.

– Check out the CNN Electoral Map and Calculator and game out your own strategy for November.

The 30-second spot starts with a shot of a stopwatch ticking, with the ad's narrator saying "why isn't the economy stronger. In the seconds it takes to watch this our national debt will increase $1.4 million."

The commercial then uses a clip of presidential candidate Obama on the campaign trail in October 2008 saying "we can't mortgage our children's future on a mountain of debt."

The ad continues with the narrator saying "now he's adding $4 billion in debt every day; borrowing from China for his spending; every second, growing our debt faster than our economy. Tell Obama 'stop the spending'. Support the New Majority Agenda at New Majority Agenda dot org."

Crossroads GPS says the spot will run on broadcast TV in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The group says the ad is the third in a four week $25 million initiative.

Crossroads GPS is the sister organization to American Crossroads, the independent super PAC that backs GOP causes and candidates.

A top Democrat was quick to react to the new Crossroads ad.

"In rushing to defend his candidate, Karl Rove has highlighted one of Governor Romney's key weaknesses. As CEO, Romney often made millions by loading up companies with unsustainable debt to pay himself fees. As Governor, Romney increased state debt by $2.6 billion – leaving the state with the highest debt per capita in the country," Bill Burton, the co-founder of Priorities USA, a pro-Obama super PAC, told CNN.

"Now Romney is proposing to add $3.4 trillion to our debt with new tax cuts for the very wealthiest Americans. In business and government, Romney has always been for more debt at the expense of the middle class, especially when it stood to make the wealthy, wealthier," added Burton, a former deputy press secretary in the Obama White House.

Those of us who can think do not agree with Karl Rove. The reason things are in the shape they are is because of Karl Rove's actions with the last administration and the likes of Boener, McConnell and Cantor. "Now let's not pass any legislation that Obama wants so he will be a one-term president." They are obstructionists. They do not care that there are folks out there who are in a terrible shape with things as they are. As an Independent, even had I wanted to vote Republican, I would not do so just because of this kind of behavior. Obama 2012!!!!!

Quick remedy to the spending: Bring ALL troops home from Iraq & Afghanistan and drive a stake through the heart of the beast better known as the military industrial complex. End ALL corporate welfare and force Conglomo & TooBigToFail, Inc to stand on their own two feet. Impose punitive tarriffs on the imports of goods produced by American businesses who outsource the work to slave labor nations.

Well, lookie there – I've solved the debt crisis! Now it's time for breakfast!

how dishonest, no acknowledgement of their contribution to the debt or the fool hardiness of cutting spending while coming out of a recession. They would love to drive us back into a depression if it meant them winning the WH. Doesn't seem to matter to them the impact on people.

Ah, yes! Again a GOP (“super- PAC”) ad that does nothing but put blame on the President without (of cause) mentioning their very own gigantic part in destroying the country (two unfunded wars, terrible foreign policies, tax cuts for the “job creators”, etc. etc….) and hampering recovery putting sand in every movement they could think of. Never mind that Romney admitted that he could not and would not reduce the deficit soon either since, among other things, he would spend lots more on the “military”! Does that ring a bell with you? Is the GOP looking already for their next war? What a simplistic approach and the assumption “the county is theirs to rip off”. You would support that? Again? Like under W? Really?

Isn't irony funny? You've got Karl 'Turdblossom' Rove, whose boss killed the budget surplus, started 2 unnecessary wars, vastly increased the debt, and allowed the housing bubble to explode and take the economy to hell, blaming President Obama for the damage.

And anther point to note is that Rove is only concerned with 10 so-called 'battleground states'. That's because our system provides this anti-democratic thing called the electoral college which disenfranshises the majority of Americans in presidential elections.

Think your vote actually counts if you don't live in Florida, Ohio, or one of the select few? Think again. You might as well live in Argentina, as much as your vote is worth. Oh, you can vote. It just doesn't count toward the election of your chosen candidate. The presidential election is kind of a non-binding referendum.

But you can look at it this way: You just saved Karl Rove a lot of money.

Divisive Romney-Rove's "crossroads" deceptively does not want to tell the real truth that a Romney-Ryan plan grossly increases deficits.

Pres. Obama's plan actually decreases the deficit. That is the real truth.

There has been a wholesale effort to mislead the publc over the source and cause of the annual deficit. The final fiscal year of the GWB administration set the record for largest deficit at just over $1.5 trillion. Repubilcans continue to push the idea that increased spending has caused the deficit when in fact spending has increased the least under Pres. Obama than any other president., only 1.5%.

Spending increased under GWB 8% during his first term, and nearly 9% during his second term. Spending increases under Democrats by small amounts, while spending under Republicans increases by 7% or more each term.

75 pecent of debt is caused by the bush tax cuts and
now the repubs want to increase that if they take over. What kind of voodoo economic is that?

The best ad should have been, "GOP Stop Drumming for Wars." Bush and GOP's wars brought US into this mess not Obama's rescue mission.

Given the state of the economy and national deficit, Romney should be in the lead except for the GOP/Tea Party war on women health care, Latino immigrants, gays, and the poor.

This false advertising needs to stop. Those two UNPAID for wars are finally on the books. Not to mention that we have to spend to get out of this mess. Not cut, cut, cut. Austerity measures are not working in Europe and they certainly won't work here without serious backlash and consequences. Have truths and distorting the truth is no different than lying. The Rovian fear tactics are not going to work.

And when George W. and the Republican congress inherited a budget surplus from the Clinton administration, did they use that surplus to begin paying down the debt? Nope. They cut taxes, they started two wars, they spent trillions of dollars. Any Republican claims about being the party of fiscal responsibility are ridiculous, at best.

These Republicans really love to run with the scare tactics. The uneducated eat it up like cake. Just look at the millions they are spending to scare the people. The biggest ploy is that " your grandchildren are the ones who will suffer ". They are really counting on it working, and unfortunately there are a lot of people who haven't enough common sense to figure it out. Our president is still dealing with the wars that Bush started as well as the unemployment Bush created. A lot more people could be working right now if the Republicans would have cooperated with the president and his work programs. If they did that we could reduce the debt, but no, their main aim is to keep the country down so that they can get President Obama out of office. Well, if anyone wants to see this country go further down than it is now, then vote Republican. Anyone who does, deserves what they get. The rest of us will just have to suffer for the idiots.

  21. The REAL Truth...

False advertising it may be, but it works! And that's why they do it. We have most folks too busy (or don't care) to do their own research so "targeted" ads like this strike at the heart of the GOP sheeple, and they fall for them EVERY time. I sincerely wish that folks would do their own research and look for the FACT and TRUTH behind the garbage that these folks are putting out...

What a waste of money. No one is paying attention to these ads. And agree @d, where was all the complaining from the GOP while they cut taxes at will, started two unfunded wars and spent like drunken sailors. The argument does not hold water and they can not win this election on the issues. Period.

Deficits don't matter. That was Rove and Cheney's position while they were ringing up debt. They have zero credibility on the issue.
When the GOP is serious about reducing deficits then they will acknowledge that revenues must be increased since they are at their lowest point in decades and corporate welfare for their masters, most notably big oil, must end. Until then, they are nothing but a hypocritical party of clowns.

Interesting twist there Rove... since you were an adviser to the last administration that Obama coincidently inherited the debt from. This includes Mr. "who cares = Halliburton" Cheney, whom I am sorry to say is from my home state.
