Obama, Romney go country in CMT Music Awards

(CNN) - President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney courted the country music vote Wednesday night, both making appearances in the opening segment of the CMT Music Awards.

The video featured a faux news report in which the show's co-hosts - actress Kristen Bell and country star Toby Keith - refuse to share the stage, prompting a campaign between the two over who will win the spotlight.

Included in the mock news story were interviews with actor Matthew McConaughey, journalist Steve Kroft and rocker Jon Bon Jovi, all of whom debated the choice between Bell and Keith.

"As they say, as country goes, so goes the country," Bon Jovi said, tweaking a famous political phrase about the swing state of Ohio.

The segment then switched to Obama, seen staring pensively out an Oval Office window as someone off camera asks with urgency, "Mr. President, do you have a decision?"

Turning to the camera, Obama replied, "This is one of the toughest decisions I've had to make since I've been in office. But I think I've decided."

He then walked to his desk, leaned over an official-looking document and circled both names on the sheet of paper.

"I want them both," he said.

The segment immediately cut to Romney, who was staring into the camera with a giant Texas flag hanging behind him. (The presumptive GOP nominee has been campaigning in the Lone Star State this week.)

"Boy, I thought the presidential election was a tough race, but it's nothing compared to the politics at the CMT Music Awards," Romney said.

Offering a solution, he proposed that both Bell and Keith host the show.

"See, I just put two people back to work," he joked. "You're welcome, America."

After the candidate cameos, the story line turned to reveal that the race between Bell and Keith had turned "negative."

The segment aired a Bell opposition ad against Keith, slamming him for such crimes as having all-ivory teeth, leaving the toilet seat up and forgetting to call his mom on Mother's Day.

Meanwhile, Keith's attack ad against Bell hit her for telling lies - as an actress.

After some final input from none other than country legend Willie Nelson, the actress and the musician agreed to take on the show together.

In a nod to Keith's 2011 hit, the pair arrived on stage in a giant red Solo cup.

  1. The REAL Truth...

@Thomas – President Bill Clinton repealed the Glass-Steagall Act which had prevented the coupling of investment banking and lending.
    --------------------
Oh the spin! Let's gets some FACTS here people !!
The portion of the Glass-Steagall that was repealed was repealed by the Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act.. NOTE that all three of the sponsors were REPUBLICANS. Most critics of that repeal argue it permitted Wall Street investment banking firms to gamble with their depositors' money that was held in affiliated commercial banks. Others have argued that the activities linked to the originating financial crisis were not prohibited (or, in most cases, even regulated) by the Glass-Steagall Act.

Clinton signed it because it was a GOP Controlled Congress at the time (55/45 Senate, 226/207 House) and his VETO would have been overridden.

    ======================================================================================

Clinton signed it because he supported it as did some Democrats. Also, it takes 2/3 of BOTH the House nad Senate to override a veto and the Democrats could have easily have stopped ANY override attempt.

Do you have any more lies that I can easily debunk?

"override of a veto – The process by which each chamber of Congress votes on a bill vetoed by the President. To pass a bill over the president's objections requires a two-thirds vote in each Chamber. Historically, Congress has overridden fewer than ten percent of all presidential vetoes."

When Republicans are in power, the rich that put them in power have them enact new laws and enhancements to make the rich even richer. When Democrats are in power, the rich pay the Republicans to "grid-lock" the government to cement in place these laws paid for by the rich, until such time as the Republicans once again resume power. It's genius - I wish I were rich! The only thing the rich care about is making more money, everything else is a sham (i.e. abortion, gay marriage, etc.), used for no other purpose than to cloak the real objective, which is to make more money. It's always, always, always about making more money - always has been, always will be. You fools!

Obama is going to get the same reception that George Bush would get at Rev. Wrights Church. Tepid at best as the Dixie Chicks don't make those events anymore.

You are correct, the country is a republic, but the governmental scheme is a democracy. Which simply means everyone is to get a say in matters.

Maybe they have some songs for "The Annointed One" I like, I'VE ENJOYED AS MUCH OF THIS AS I CAN STAND. DETOUR, and in November, SINGING THE BLUES. Mitt may be singing HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN. But to be fair to Obama we can sing, MOVE IT ON OVER, RELEASE ME and DON'T LET THE STARS GET IN YOUR EYES. or, ALL THE MONKEYS AIN'T IN THE ZOO. Ya All have a nice day now, hear!

President Obama is cool and he is comfortable with all kinds. The bishop from Kolob, on the other hand, is only comfortable in mansions like papa johns' owner with the pool and the golf course for a backyard.
The President still hasn't gotten enough credit for giving the order to kill bin laden but the more educated US population knows even if the rednecks still don't get it.

Repub or dem-it makes them look trivial. I for one am sick of seeing Obama ,or Romney, as the case may be, on TV. Obama has a job which he never does b/c of all his campaigns and appearances. and it looks like Romney is following suit.

Things have changed since the ability to buy the media essentially determines the outcome. In today's environment following the actions of the right-wing SCOTUS, every "billionaire" gets a say and uses that voice to influence the outcome. Just look at the farce of a Republican Primary. The Koch brother bought Romney and the others were nothing more than window-dressing.

@guest, the President is still doing his job. He has shown us that he can multi task (I.e., correspondents dinner in 2011 then go watch bin laden finally be killed).
The bishop from Kolob, on the other hand and by his own admission, is unemployed. I guess having a fortune of $250+M is considered jobless. Who would have thunk it!
