Axelrod brushes off Romney's big money month

(CNN) – The senior strategist for President Barack Obama's re-election team said he's "not surprised" his campaign raised less money last month than Republican rival Mitt Romney.

David Axelrod attributed Romney's May haul of $77 million to the end of the Republican primary season, allowing the presumptive GOP nominee to shore up cash that was previously going to a crowded field of contenders.

"You pick up all the money that you couldn't raise in the primary from Republicans who were supporting other candidates," Axelrod said on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer." "So we anticipated this."

Romney's fundraising totals came from a joint effort between Romney for President, Romney Victory, and the Republican National Committee. The figure marked a big jump from April, when he took in $40.1 million.

Since the beginning of April, Romney's rivals Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich have dropped out of the race. The former Massachusetts governor also crossed the 1,144 delegate threshold for the August convention, essentially clinching the GOP presidential nomination.

Obama's campaign, meanwhile, announced Thursday it raised $60 million in May, an amount also divided between the re-election campaign, the Democratic National Committee and affiliated Democratic state parties.

While Romney's numbers were higher in May, the Republican effort said they ended May with $107 million in the bank. Obama's campaign did not disclose their cash on hand for May, though they ended April with $115 million.

Responding to the Romney fund-raising announcement, Obama campaign press secretary Ben LaBolt tweeted: "Reminder on RNC/Romney camp fundraising: 1st month joint committee was in existence, so all their primary donors wrote their maxout checks."

Romney and the RNC joined fund-raising forces beginning May 8.

– CNN's Kevin Liptak and Ashley Killough contributed to this report.

"We don't buy or sell the Presidency"? Really? As far as I know, that is politics as usual in this country.

Romney looted American companies and shipped their jobs overseas.

Obama created 4.2 million private sector jobs and saved GM.

    Who is better for America?

Right On, posters! This presidency is Not up for the highest bidder, but for the person best suited for the job! Romney wears nice suits (probably Italian, custom made), but has not shown 1 Iota of Care for the average Americans situation! He hasn't made any statements as to how he'll improve the lot of the middleclass or poor, because he doesn't care about us! He has stated how he'll improve the lot of the rich, over & over, especially w/his endorsement of the Ryan Budget plan, which is now being denounced by American nuns! This country is ours, people! We have to stand up & make our voice heard through votes! About 25-30% of the population votes, but we need a deluge! I encourage every American who can, to go to the voting booths & vote your Conscience! Vote for Your candidate & make sure that is a vote For yourself & your family!!

Romney is only a pawn of the Wall Street corporate elite, the military industrial-complex wh want a war in Iran, the super rich like Trump who won't even give health care to his workers, and the uneducated Christian Right who want a theocracy. Obama will wipe the floor with Romney. Romney needs to go to Nauvoo, Illinois or Salt Lake City and wait for his version of a polygamist Jesus Christ. Anyone who believes Jesus Christ preached to the American Indians needs to have their head examined. Women just keep stocking up an Ru 486 and the Republicans will surely lose.

David axelrod sounds as if he is in a hurry. Most of the statements he makes are contradictory. I know he has to make some stupid statements in order to stay float but doesn't have to get desperate. Frankly his boss Obama is yet to convince me as a leader. So far he has failed the nation as a leader and now his campaign leaders are trying to take advantage of success we had with osama killing. We all are aware how we got information about courier who eventually led us to his location.

For former republican, what makes you think that middle class n the poor won't vote for Romney!!! Is it because he is rich ? I want you to know that we should, stop being jealous and look for ways to improve our lives. My friend there is nothing wrong in being rich and as a matter of fact we should all aim to be rich.

@Former Republican: Oh yes we will. I'm in the middle class, and I, along with friends and family, are absolutely voting for Romney. It's been a miserable four years.

Republicans on here seem to think it's OK for people to be able to buy the election. These people are beyond the point of beinmg brainwashed. Money in politics equals corruption, but what would the GOP be without a little corruption?

Obama has ONE month where the unemployment raises and the GOP pretty much claims victory while ignoring the almost 2 years when unemployment was steadily falling? Romney FINALLY raises more money than Obama and the GOP claim some sort of mandate? Get a clue. The money he got came from donors who have been sitting on their cash this whole time! If they were true Romney supporters they'd have already donated... The GOP is settling for Romney the way Democrats settled for Kerry. Remember how that turned out?

@ former republican: Oh yes we will. I will absolutely be voting for Romney, along with my middle class family and friends. The direction this country is headed economically is not in the best interest of my middle class children either. You really think Obama will change course??

Money allways buys the job. Whoever raises the most cash wins.........So, why waist everybodys time by voting.
This is the new corporate style democracy. What's good for the corporations is good for the USA...Right???

David Axelrod is a patsy. Of course he would brush off Romney's big fundraising month. That translates to "oh no – we have troube.". Of course if Obama out raised Romney in the month – he'd be pontificating on how the president has more supporters and is going to win in November. Wake up David. Obama is going to lose.

Wall Street has switched sides. They don't like Obama's plans to "reign them in". That's WHY the money is flowing into the Romney Camp. Romney is THEIR guy!

I love it when Liberals and Conservatives fight petty class wars against each other. You OBOMNEYNITES have no idea whats going on. This phrase, "the rich get rich and the poor get poorer", is derived from a falsehood that no one who is considered "poor" can become "rich". Please educate your self and stop reading things by Karl Marx or Keynes and actually read a good book from someone like I don't know Adam Smith. In it, you will find that plenty of people can attain wealth in our society if you just, I dont know, work for yourself?

Romney has A LOT of baggage. He'll get A LOT of money. Walker got A LOT of money. The Rich are making their move to take FULL control of this government and its economic policies. If you're in the bottom 99%, inventory the fillings in your teeth. If this guy's elected, you had better start saving for your dentist visits after Romney leaves office.

This happened to Kerry in 2004. This isn't a huge surprise then. It seems that Romney doesn't really need the money because there are so many other right wing groups that will attack Obama because he hasn't walked on water and cured cancer.

Maggie – You're absolutely correct. They praise themselves when they make more money yet now ignore it. Ignorance is a well known trait of democrats. Obama partying with the 1% yet bashes them while the liberals love it. Too funny.

Mr. Axelrod looks tired and a bit dejected. For quite a while now. He is experienced and he knows the campaign is in a tight spot.

The whole world use to look up to us for inspiration for our financial success and innovation. Now a days we are being looked at as failure because of people like former republican and president Obama. There is nothing wrong in being successful and prosperous. Romney is successful and is willing to take a chance and experiment. We need to try new ways to improve our lives.
