Crossroads going up with ads in three key Senate races

Washington (CNN) - An independent group co-founded by Karl Rove that's already spending big bucks to put up television commercials critical of President Barack Obama is now going up with ads in three crucial U.S. Senate races.

Crossroads GPS and American Crossroads announced Thursday they will spend $1.12 million to run spots statewide on broadcast TV and cable in Indiana, Montana, and New Mexico.

The ad in Montana takes on freshman Democratic Sen. Jon Tester.

"Wonder how America's debt has nearly doubled since Jon Tester went to Washington?" asks the narrator in the spot. "Instead of being an independent voice for Montana, Tester's voted for Barack Obama's policies 95% of the time. For Obama's trillion dollar health care takeover. For the failed trillion dollar stimulus! And voted to raise the debt limit six times for a total of six trillion dollars."

Tester faces off in November against Republican Rep. Denny Rehberg. Two of the top non-partisan political handicappers, the Cook Political Report and the Rothenberg Political Report, both rate the race as a toss up.

The Crossroads commercial in Indiana takes on Rep. Joe Donnelly, the Democrat who will face off with State Treasurer Richard Mourdock in the general election, in the battle to replace Sen. Richard Lugar, who has served in office since 1976. Mourdock defeated Lugar in last month's Republican Senate primary in Indiana.

"Since Joe Donnelly went to Washington, America's debt has increased $3.5 billion per day – up $7 trillion in less than six years," says the narrator in the spot. "How? Donnelly has voted for trillions of Barack Obama's wasteful spending. For Obama's $1.7 trillion health care law. Or his wasteful $1 trillion stimulus. Donnelly even voted to raise the debt limit four times."

Cook and Rothenberg rate the Indiana race as "lean Republican."

The Crossroads ad in New Mexico is positive, touting former Rep. Heather Wilson, who earlier this week won the state's GOP Senate primary.

"What kind of senator do you want?" asks the narrator. "How about an Air Force veteran. A mother of three. Someone who has already worked to cut wasteful Washington spending and keep taxes low. Who has an independent record of standing up to her own party. In the Senate, Heather Wilson will stop the reckless spending and fight for good jobs."

Wilson will face off in November against Democratic Rep. Martin Heinrich in the battle to succeed Sen. Jeff Bingaman, the five term Democrat who decided against running for re-election. Cook rates New Mexico a toss up and Rothenberg ranks it as toss up/tilt Democrat.

"Voters in Montana, Indiana, and New Mexico understand that Karl Rove and the special interests are investing in Denny Rehberg, Richard Mourdock and Heather Wilson because they back an anti-middle class agenda that will cut Medicare benefits, privatize Social Security, and provide billions in giveaways to big oil companies and the wealthiest Americans," said Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Communications Director Matt Canter, in response to the Crossroads spots.

Crossroads GPS says it's spending $860,000 to run the spots in Indiana and Montana and American Crossroads says it's spending $260,000 to run the ad in New Mexico.

Crossroads GPS is the sister organization to American Crossroads, the independent super PAC that backs GOP causes and candidates. Crossroads GPS is currently spending around $25 million to run ads critical of the president over a four week period in crucial battleground states.

The Democrats currently have a 53-47 (51 Democrats and two independents who caucus with the party) majority in the Senate, but they are defending 23 of the 33 seats up for grabs this November.

after seeing stuff like this with Karl Rove's bunch and that so-called bought and paid for election in Wisconsin, I wonder how some of the judges on the SCOTUS can sleep at night seeing what they have wrought.

Pile on the excuses. Maybe once 2012 is over and the Romney Administration turns American federal finances around with the same success Governor Walker has had in Wisconsin, the Democratic Party will finally admit that tax and spend isn't the right philosophy for American success. The majority of American voters obviously are ahead of the Democratic Party in that regard.

  5. Wake up people

Yet stupid people still believe them... Really makes you wonder.....were people in comas from 2000-2008?? Have people really forgotten why the country is in the pitiful shape it's in?? And do people really want to send their sons and daughters off to another war for them to be maimed or killed while Mittens grooms his (5) sons to follow in his footsteps and avoid serving?? Is this what people really want? The rich get richer while the poor become slaves or indentured servants?

    Wake the hell up people!
    OBAMA 2012!

    @ Four and the Door

The last poll I saw was that a majority of Americans were in FAVOR of higher taxes on the wealthy and ending tax breaks for big oil and corporations. But as usual the Republicans only want to do the will of the American people when it's something that they agree with.

As long as they keep the ads out of Colorado, I don't care. We are already inundated with them. There should be a law that there will only be 30 days of political ads, and only a total of 15 minutes per day per side. Wouldn't life be grand!

the majority of Americans don't want gay marriage and Obamacare and it is being jammed down our throats anyways. If you want to allow polls to dictate things then please make sure your consistent.

All this money going into these SuperPACS, unaccountable, with pledges sitting out there in excess of $1.0 Billion additional money, combined with the voter purging and regulations being enacted nationwide and the absolute ZERO level of accountability for accurate infomraton, the Voters better pay attention this year, closely.

Only 4 Democratic senators are needed to take a majority. 23 seats in the House the Democrats, if they win them, would be a majority. Imagine, only 27 people needed to stop the obstructionist tactics and resulting stalemate for the WHOLE country. Hardly seems "representative" or even fair to me.

  12. The REAL Truth...

@delusional – who says the majority of Americans don't want Obamacare? What they don't want is the Individual Mandate, and for "most" Americans, that's the only part of ACA that they know about.
But in true GOBP divisive fashion, they focus on the funding decrease to Medicare as being bad. If you read ACA you'd know that Medicare will no longer be needed – and therefore no need to fund it. Medicare is govt coverage for the Over-65 and those with pre-existing conditions. The insurance companies are to pick up those folks as part of ACA, without increasing costs and also keep admin expenses to under 20% of revenue.

    @ Delusional...
How is Obama forcing gay marriage down anybody's throats? Just because he supports it doesn't mean he expects a majority of Amercians to do so. And by the way if you want to go by polling MORE Americans are willing to accept that than you want to give credit for. You mixing gay marriage with ending tax breaks for big oil and higher taxes on the upper 1% is really mixing apples and oranges. But at least you have the first part of your new handle correct...DELUSIONAL!!

  14. The REAL Truth...

@Four and The Door – what tax and spend! There's no taxes.. we're paying the lowest Fed tax rates in history – which is part of the problem... NO frakkin' revenue! If you do a little FACT checking (something you right wing nuts are loath to do, because it shows you how wrong you really are) you will find that over the last 100 years (look it up buster) the times of highest GDP, economic growth and American Prosperity have ALL occurred under Dem Congresses and HIGHER TAX rates.
Yet the Republicrats insist on the lower taxes and less govt mantra. Problem is that they have yet to deliver on either of those ideals yet the sheeple continue to believe. Even Reagan RAISED TAXES multiple times and INCREASED Fed employee levels by some 283,000 ! In contrast, Obama has kept the Bush tax cuts and reduced the size of govt by 270,000. You can have it both ways!

Hey Four and The Door is your real name Karl Rove?? You my friend are pathetic in your analysis of what Romney or any other Repube would do to turn the economy around. It is your party that put us in this mess with all the deregulation you promoted since your guru Reagan started reducing the policing of corporations!!

How about helping Mia Love in Utah & Smith in PA? Bob Casey is a worse debater than Rick Perry. Not running attack ads against a Senator who cannot articulate a defense is a big mistake. Casey is by far the most vulnerable democrat this time around.
