DEVELOPING… THE WAR TO DEFINE WHO IS MORE OUT OF TOUCH HEATS UP… President Barack Obama, at the White House podium 11:01 a.m. ET: “We created 4.3 million jobs over the last two, 27 months, over 800,000 just this year alone. The private sector's doing fine. Where we're seeing weaknesses in our economy have to do with state and local government, oftentimes cuts initiated by, you know, governors or mayors who are not getting the kind of help that they have in the past from the federal government and who don't have the same flexibility as the federal government in dealing with fewer revenues coming in.”
Mitt Romney, 12:08 p.m. ET: “For the president of the United States to stand up and say the private sector is doing fine is going to go down in history. It's an extraordinary miscalculation and misunderstanding by a president who is out of touch.”
Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama, walking back his assertion at a press conference the "private sector's doing fine," acknowledged Friday that "it is absolutely clear that the economy is not doing fine."
The struggling economy, he clarified, is "why I had the press conference."
(CNN) - Republicans wasted little time on Friday after President Barack Obama's assertion that the "private sector's doing fine," hammering him for the comment in a web video, conference call, and on stage at the Conservative Political Action Conference.
GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney asked at a campaign event in Iowa if the president was "really that out of touch."
(CNN) - A day after endorsing Mitt Romney, Sen. Rand Paul said it would be an honor to run alongside the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.
"A year, year and a half ago, I was a physician in a small town," Paul, the junior Republican senator from Kentucky, told CNN's Don Lemon. "And it would be a great honor to be considered as a vice president for the Republican Party. I think that would be something that anybody who said otherwise would not be being truthful."
Salt Lake City, Utah (CNN) - Mitt Romney berated Barack Obama as "so far from reality" after the president said the private sector is "doing fine" during a press conference Friday.
"He said the private sector is doing fine. Is he really that out of touch? I think he is defining what it means to be detached and out of touch with the American people," Romney said in Council Bluffs, Iowa after a roundtable discussion with farmers.
