White House receives political cover on immigration from religious groups

Washington (CNN) – President Barack Obama is receiving political cover for his decision to stop deporting some young illegal immigrants from two big groups with whom his relations have been rocky: evangelical Christians and Catholics.

"We do give credit where credit is due," said Kevin Appleby, director of Migration and Public Affairs for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, on Friday, when Obama made his announcement.

Congratulations to our president for once again doing the right thing. I'm also proud that my church, Evangelical Lutheran Chruch of America, supports the president and his policy change on immigration.

Politics is "return on investment". I knew we would find out why Obama made this move.

As we go into the 2012 campaigns remember, after everything our corporate contenders Romney and Obama say they support, insert the phrase "...because I can get more votes / money / power".

    vote 3rd party!

I totally agree, Obama really knew how to pull the rug from under Republicans. This move has guaranteed him the Latino vote that will give him another 4 years in the White House. The guy is extremely good. He's words to Romney should be Gotcha!

What part of illegal do people not understand. Try going to Mexico illegally and see how fast you atre either jailed or deported. Our own students have a hard time getting into college, but we are supposed to give illegals all the benefits. If employers are to use E-Verify, then how can illegals even with diplomas get a legal job.Semper Fi

You got it and I said the exact same thing last week when Former President Clinton got in the mix I knew it was time to play hardball and the Republicans never saw it coming. Obama and Clinton together are Masterminds.

So true, but the Obama sheeple just can't help themselves. It's their love-fest with this guy and to hell with our country and the American citizens.

Gotta love the ones who contradict the ideas this president puts forward. Then you ask them what their solution is and they have nothing. Romney can present his own idea! But they don't have one, do they? And if Obama adopts it then the Republicans will reject their own idea. Brilliant!

This country was stolen and built by immigrants. How the hell can anyone say Pres. Obama didn't do the right thing. Every last American are decendents of illigal immigrants. How can you justify your still being here and telling other cultures don't have the same rights. You are not giving the current immigrants anything but the same opportunity that was given to you.

It's past time for sanity in American immigration policy. Immigrants are not enemies. Most come here to work their butts off. A few come to cause trouble. We need to secure the border so the former can conduct legitimate business here and add value to our society, and the latter can be kept out. Lumping them all together, however, is just dumb.

I'm amazed at the people who say it's a good move because it will win the President votes. If you think it's right or moral or whatever... fine. But to consider something good policy because it wins votes is pathetic. Why not just cancel the election? Problem solved. Good politics rarely equals good policy.

well I guess now the Republicans will get p/oed at the Catholic Church again. They were happy when they supported them on the birth control issue but when they went against them on the Ryan Budget the Repubs turned their backs on them. I am sure they will do the same in this case as well.

Republicans are EXPLODING because they wanted to be the SAVIORS of the Immigrants!! But because their arrogant BULL-HEAD nasty one-sided ways WOULD NOT allow them to work with President Obama, they will LOSE this battle too along with many others.

Go for Broke President Obama – There will be so much out there for MITTens and “the other” Republicans to HATE, they will stick out like a SORE THUMB!!!

    -----------------------------------------------------
Based on what we see in Texas our kids may have a hard time getting into college because right-wing radicals spend their time worrying about trying infuse religion into our textbooks while cutting science and math wiith budget reductions. Republican efforts to increase student loan rates can't help...

Right now a group of 11 Republican Congressmen from agricultural states are requesting expidited processing of work permits because nobody from the U.S. will do the hard work required in agriculture. We want them to pick our crops, hoe our weeds, and clean our pools. Nobody ever said we had to give them "all the benefits". Many of them have been paying income taxes and Social Security all of their lives – with no hope of drawing a check. Many immigrants have joined the Marines and died for our freedom.

Obama is mucho mucho the best. Stop deporting old people too, the border has been wide open for the last 20 years, Canada now is seeing a mass influx.

Let's see where their "christian" values take the republicans on this one. to quote my father, a staunch democrat, we are ALL God's children. The borders are just lines on a map.

Romney just lost the election. Now he knows why President Obama and his team have been setting up shop in places like Arizona. These negociations have been taking place for some time now. Now, Romney will either have to alienate the base or everybody else. Either way, he's screwed. Game. Set. Match. Obama

No wonder America is in such dire straits , you follow partisan politics whichever side you are on and allow politicians to do and say anything for political expedience.
Obama is probably the most inexperienced and divisive President you have ever had , all these promises and yet he never tells you how the country is going to pay for it , hence you will go deeper and deeper into debt.
