Nominee for ambassador to Iraq withdraws from consideration

Washington (CNN) - Brett McGurk, President Obama's pick to be ambassador to Iraq, has withdrawn from consideration following revelations about questionable conduct, an administration official said Monday.

"We greatly appreciate Brett's years of service on behalf of the United States, to include tireless and effective leadership in Iraq from the height of the war to the moment our last troops left Iraq in December and through the challenging transition earlier this year," National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said in a statement.

"McGurk has come under scrutiny since salacious e-mails with Wall Street Journal reporter Gina Chon were made public, revealing the two carried on an affair while they were stationed in Baghdad in 2008. The couple later married, but the e-mails and ensuing revelations led to Chon's resignation from her post last week at the Journal."

So, what. They were two consenting adults who eventually married.

The only issue that I can see is the un-Christian Conservatives objecting to an affair out of wedlock. But, that's none of their business, either. Ya' know. Liberal have no spine at times.

Doesn't an affair usually indicate that one or both are married Rudy??? Sounds like potential bribery material and exposes him and the country. Why take the risk when there are others to consider?

Horrendously bad judgement on McGurk's part. Involved in delciate negotiations and gets involved in an affair?!! How did he know she wasn't using her "charms" to get close to him for information, or worse, bribary material?!! No way this idiot should be appointed to any high position. If you can't control your zipper you can't control your mouth and should look elsewhere for employment. What a dummy.
