Obama asserts executive privilege on Fast and Furious documents

Washington (CNN) - An extraordinary House committee hearing began considering a contempt measure against Attorney General Eric Holder on Wednesday even though President Barack Obama asserted executive privilege over documents sought by the panel investigating the botched Fast and Furious gun-running sting.

Committee chairman Rep. Darrell Issa, R-California, said the White House assertion of executive privilege "falls short" of any reason to delay the hearing.

All you people defending Holder should think what would you want if it was a member of your family that had died by these guns. Agent Terry's family deserves answers on this and I don't care if it's democrats or republicans responsible for this they should be punished for this.

I wonder if these documents will point to George Bush's Administration as working outside of the law when they started this program. In that case, lets see the documents. But, would that then mean George will be in contempt when he doesn't show up? He is the one who left us with sooooo many problems, yet, we all know that Darryl Issa wouldn't dream of taking HIM to the cleaners. But, it just might backfire on the him and one of the biggest donors to the Republican Party – the NRA. Dig deeper, then. Otherwise, shut-up and help fix the mess we've been left.

For starters, none of the posts above yours are defending Holders. Maybe CNN is censoring them? Just like military personnel are aware of the inherent dangers of their jobs, so are Border Patrol Agents. F&F was a carryover from the previous admin, so technically THEY should be punished. Additionally, the families of the thousands of servicemembers killed/maimed in two wars based on lies would like answers as well. Some have been waiting 10 years for answers and would like to see those responsible for sending their loved ones off to die for oil and lies would like to see someone punished too, but that doesn't look like it'll happen either unless the rethugs can find a way to pin it on President Obama.

Check your records, people. I did. Bush used more exec. orders his first 4 years than Obama has.

It's been common practice for over 200 years.

But, let's see, Obama is black, Holder is black, hmmmmmmmmm - just saying

Executive privelage was the path to go down. Mr. Holder by LAW can not release those documents. This is nothing but a political sideshow Issa is putting on. He should be ashamed of himself.

On the subject of [Obama's] decision [Friday] to unilaterally enact sweeping changes to U.S. immigration policy on nothing but his own say-so, we would like to introduce Barack Obama to Barack Obama, who during a Univision interview just last year affirmed: 'America is a nation of laws, which means I, as the president, am obligated to enforce the law. ... There are enough laws on the books by Congress that are very clear in terms of how we have to enforce our immigration system that for me to simply through executive order ignore those congressional mandates would not conform with my appropriate role as president.'

Perhaps the release of these documents will show that Obama knew of F&F or maybe even approved it. Either way, he is protecting his re-election campaign ... where is the transparency that Obama promised? ... or is this another promise broken?

So obama and holder show their guilt and corruption. And democrats defend the guilty and corrupt. Snakes, all.

    @Malory Archer: Right on! Also:
"Executive privilege" has been used from George Washington to Eisenhow, Nixon, Clinton, GW Bush and
others. So, by some blogger's standards "all are quilty" of something.
Never mind that it is illegal to reveal certain documents and that "fishing expeditions" do not take precedence over
    national security.

Well, its official, THE ADMINISTRATION IS HIDING THE TRUTH AND IS WILLING TO DO ANYTHING TO KEEP THE SECRET. The bluff was called by the Republicans and the Obama Administration folded. This spells the end of Holder, its just a matter of time before he is gently nudged out.

I'll be waiting for the angry editorials in the NY Times and the endless stories in the news about the Administrations actions to play out the clock by withholding evidence that was demanded legally by Issa and the commitee. But I won't hold my breath.

Just a little info: Operation Fast and Furious was modeled after Operation Wide Receiver (2006-2007), which did pretty much exactly the same thing under the Bush Administration. The Bush Administration did not pursue any prosecutions as a result of Wide Receiver. The Obama Administration reviewed Wide Receiver and did pursue prosecutions.

I am not a fan of these operations. It seems they were somewhat poorly conceived and even more poorly executed. However, if anyone thinks that the cartels would not have bought guns if not for these operations, they are naive.

Clearly, this is what the repugs were after all along. This is how they play politics; they push the opposition until there is no choice but to do something like this.

Executive privilege is the only way to end this useless witch hunt, and now it will be used as fodder by the right.

Thee is, and should be, a separation between branches of government. For the Obama administration to say, "Look at any documents we have to see what you can find" would do great harm to the office of the Presidency.
