Contempt vote inflames Fast and Furious debate

Washington (CNN) - A possible U.S. House vote next week on citing Attorney General Eric Holder for contempt of Congress in connection with the botched Fast and Furious gun-running sting evoked bitter political sniping Thursday between Republicans and Democrats.

Despite statements by all parties favoring a deal to avoid what would be an unprecedented contempt citation against a sitting attorney general, the heated rhetoric indicated congressional leaders and Holder remained committed to deeply rooted stances on the politically charged issue.

During the Holder hearings, why was Cornyn grilling him about gun control, voter roll purges, and other unrelated issues that have nothing to do with the death of a federal agent? Why are they requesting documents about those unrelated topics? Documents related to ongoing legal action against Republicans, such as the suit against FLA for voter purges.

AG Holder ended the program. Why haven't the Republicans called any of the Bush administration officials who started the programs in the first place to the hearings?

  2. A True Centrist

Holder owes it to the family of the Border Patrol Agent who was killed, the families of the hundreds killed in Mexico and the families of those who he admitted would be killed with these weapons to cooperate with this investigation. The House panel trimmed its request from 70,000 documents to 1,300, but Holder still won't cooperate unless the House agrees it will end its investigation with the 1,300. Is he crazy...someone needs to be held accountable for the considerable loss of life caused by this debacle, and for the Dem leadership to side with the cover-up just because they have a (D) party affiliation is disgusting.

Perhaps they will realize that most Americans could now be charged with having a contempt FOR congress. Why don't they try doing something useful instead of wasting time hunting witches...

Massive indiscreet dissemination of guns is an attack on the 2nd amendment ?

Gee, the Democrats are upset about citing the most lawless Attorney General serving the most lawless President in our history??? Oh well, there is a very easy solution, FOLLOW THE LAWS!!! Holder and Obama are a DISGRACE TO THIS COUNTRY AND TO THEIR OFFICE. Why do they think they are above the law and can disregard them at will??? Cuff and jail the both of them as far as I am concerned.

GOP witch hunt. Nothing but partisan politics at it's extreme worst. That's why most Americans despise this Congress, and the GOP in particular.

Witch hunts don't have dead Mexican citizens and US Border Patrol agents like Fast & Furious. You insult the families of the victims with this gross mischaracterization.

  11. The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president

The Republicans in Congress have introduced: 46 bills on Abortion, 113 bills on Religion, 73 bills on Family relationship, 36 bills on marriage, 72 bills on firearms, 604 bills on tax cuts for the rich, 467 bills on government investigation .... AND BLOCKED THE AMERICAN JOB ACT!!!

For Obama to claim Executive Privilege HE would have had to be involved at some level with this whole mess which sure would explain why Holder refuses to hand over the documents. Holder has ALREADY been caught lying to Congress on what he knew and when. If the documents show Whitehouse involvement either before or after this all blew up in their faces, then Obama will be proven as a liar to the American people. Either way, this whole mess clearly demonstrates the TOTAL INCOMPETENCE of the Attorney General and Obama.

The truth will likely come out once BOTH are removed from office next Janaury. Then hopefully criminal charges can be pursued for their part in the death of a US Border patrol agent and hundreds of Mexicans.

Rep. Darrell Issa's past includes arrests for weapons charges and auto theft, suspicions of arson, and accusations of intimidation with a gun, but you'd hardly know it from the media's recent coverage of the new chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. While Issa was substantially mentioned in 15 articles in the nation's largest newspapers since the last election - including several major profiles - only one of those articles mentioned any of these allegations. Likewise, interviewers did not ask Issa about his alleged criminal past in any of the cable or network interviews he sat for during that period. Should be in jail.

If republicans could have put more effort in creating jobs, the way they have pressurised Holder, everyone all over the country could have a job and many being vacant.

A subpoena is not a law. Fox News has misled you and your kind once again. There is no hidden conspiracy to spring a hidden gun control agenda on the unsuspecting public. That is extremist conspiracy theory. "They have not done anything to advance gun controls, so they must be plotting something really big to spring on us."

You know, it takes one to know one.

Rudy NYC, then why is Holder asking to be exhonerated in exchange for making the documents available? As an attorney, it is pretty obvious what is happening here. He is attempting to gain immunity before turning over damaging information.

Rudy, you know as well as I do that the this program is vastly different than that of prior administrations. Pretending it isnt only shows how little you care about those that were killed as a result of the gross mismanagement of this program. Holder lied, this much is fact. He gave conflicting testimony, fact. He's withheld requested documents, fact. He's stalled and mislead, fact. And now the implications of Obama's direct involvement. Can you stop being a partisan liberal for once? Do you care so little about the lives lost? From how I see it, you dont.

If Obama and Holder have nothing to hide, then why are they hiding so much??? Holder has brought NO CHARGES in nearly 2 years so endangering an imaginery investigation is a joke. And this is the same clown that is supposed to be investigating the top security leaks out of the Whitehouse??? Next joke!

Obama has now staked his presidency on this and protecting Holder with the claim of Executive Privilege. It is clear he is only trying to get past the November election before the true magnitude of this fiasco becomes public knowledge. It is safe to say now that it extends to the highest levels of the Whitehouse and to Obama himself.

  20. Vote the Tea Party OUT in 2012

Congress right now has an 11% approval rating and the only thing they can do is waste taxpayer money on this type of foolishness. People need jobs and worry about the economy and although it was unforunate that an agent lost his life, this is NOT on the main agenda for 2012.

Silly rabbit. Tricks are for kids.

Holder is not asking to be exhonerated from anything. That's a false talking point. Republicans are demanding documents unrelated to the death of a US agent. Do you know they grilled Holder about gun control laws? Voter ID lawsuits? The suit against Florida?

Holder has refused to turn over docuents pertaining to other ongoing investigations...which would be unlawful. So what do Republicans do in response? They hold him in contempt??? For not breaking the law???

Holder ended the program. How come the Republicans refuse to interview the real culprits, the people who started up th program and three others like it under the Bush administration?
