Mary Cheney marries partner

(CNN) – Mary Cheney, the daughter of Dick Cheney, married her longtime partner Heather Poe Friday, according to a statement from the former vice president's office.

"Mary and Heather have been in a committed relationship for many years, and we are delighted that they were able to take advantage of the opportunity to have that relationship recognized," Dick Cheney and his wife Lynne wrote in a statement. "Mary and Heather and their children are very important and much loved members of our family and we wish them every happiness."

The couple married in Washington, D.C., which legalized same-sex marriage in 2009. The pair has two children together – a son Samuel, and a daughter Sarah.

Mary Cheney's sexual orientation was known during her father's first run, in 2000, for vice president, though her family generally declined to discuss her personal life on the campaign trail.

In 2004, Mary Cheney's sexuality was thrust into the spotlight when John Kerry and John Edwards, the Democratic presidential and vice presidential candidates, mentioned her when asked about their stance on same-sex marriages.

Good for her and I hope both of them all the happiness in the world. This puts alexithymic Mitt in some bind, though--he's scheduled to have a fun raiser at Death Vader's house this summer. GOP-pers, even they can't deny they are on the wrong side of history.

Yet Mr Cheneys party still refuses to see the value in this type of commited relationship.

Good for Mary, now please point out to your father, sister, Rush Limbaugh, Mike Huckabee & FOXPAC that you are not the face of e-vil.

Gee Ryche, maybe because he never did in the political world or fought his own party policy over it?

It's because on the LEFT, stuff like that is part of our everyday life and it does not bother us, so it's no BIG DEAL!! Now, why didn't the RIGHT brag about it and bring it to front as a proud moment; naw, they decided to keep it on the DOWN-LOW!!!

Where are the Republican Fire and Brimstone Bigots and Christian Frauds? Dare you not to speak against Eichmann Cheney and/or his daughter?

Or is gay marriage only wrong if it involves a Democrat speaking of it, or doing it?

Wow, so Republicans are not so anti-gay marriage as Democrats led people to believe. Now what will Democrats try to pull out of their magic hat?

Jack- This is why I hate this "I am a republican/ Democrat" bunk. I consider myself GOP, but think that marriage is a right to all. I am pro-life, pro gun control, pro smaller government and and a big anti-racist. However, when we start slamming one side or another , we alienate those moderates and create emotions that want to stand up for everything else we believe in since they are represented by a larger group that may or may not reflect our views entirely. I never saw gay marriage as a religious thing, since it is a union legally accepted by the government, whether or not a service takes place in a church. Older generations may have a problem with it, because they are unable to see a difference. I personally believe most of the strife betweeen the two parties is created by the media, and fed by people who make nasty comments. So, lets nice and respectful and we can actually accomplish something in our future.

Are you kidding ryche? It wasn't a big deal because it had no impact. The foamy mouthed zealots were all about hating gays, and still are. Liberals, and a growing number of more vocal, reasonable conservatives, are the only ones who can change anything for the better for gay people. He supported his gay daughter, but did that translate to anything on a policy level? No. Yeah, liberals are the problem.

Go for Mary Cheney and happiness to them both. Wonder what the extreme religious right wing nut jobs think about it.

This is as close as Dick Cheney has come to being a human being. I'm sure the Teavangelicals are shocked to learn he can also respect people's right to love whomever they choose. iI's not the duty of the Christian right-wing to "rule" on every issue.

It's a big deal because every political candidate the Republicans offered is on record as being opposed to gay marriage. Using your own term this means nobody the Republicans offer to serve as POTUS is "enlightened". I agree!

    @ ryche...

I noticed that when our "campaigner in chief" as you like to call him came out in favor of gay marriage, he got a majority of the flak from the party of Cheney and not only that Cheney was very SILENT on the subject. I was not surprised at the latter because they would not come out and support Obama on anything even if they agree with him. So I can say the same of your conservatives about double standards as you do about liberals.

Where are all the righty posters decrying how Dick Cheney and his family are destroying the American family? Where are all the righty posters saying that since a Republican family is engaged in this kind of immoral behavior (which will lead to bestiality and pedophilia, obviously) demands that every Republican quit the party?

    Hmmmm? Where is the outcry?

The only time a prominent conservative is infavor of anything is when it affects them personally. For example, conservatives fell all over themselves regarding leniency towrds drug ddicts when Rush was an addict. Same thing when it was revealed Bristol Palin was pregnant and a high-school dropout: suddenly, it was less objectionable. Hypocrites all
