Perry: Fast and Furious is 'Nixonian'

(CNN) – Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Sunday labeled President Barack Obama's claim of executive privilege over Operation Fast and Furious as "Nixonian," suggesting the scandal is worse than Watergate.

"You have a president who is using his executive privilege to keep that information from Congress. If that's not Nixonian, then I don't know what is," Perry said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

The Republican governor and former presidential candidate portrayed the botched gun-running operation as more serious than the 1970s Watergate scandal that led to the resignation of former President Richard Nixon.

"We've had over 300 Mexican nationals killed directly attributable to this Fast and Furious operation, where they brought those guns into Mexico. A former Marine and a Border Patrol agent by the name of Brian Terry lost his life," Perry said. "With Watergate you had a second-rate burglary."

Obama asserted executive privilege last week over Justice Department documents surrounding the Fast and Furious probe by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. The House is expected to vote next week to cite Attorney General Eric Holder for contempt of Congress.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives launched the operation out of Arizona to track weapon purchases by Mexican drug cartels. However, it lost track of more than 1,000 firearms that the agency had allowed straw buyers to carry across the border, and two of the lost weapons turned up at the scene of the 2010 killing of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.

So PatSJ, we should not investigate an accessory to murderS and their coverup?

To myself and many people in this country, these crimes rise to something much much worst than watergate.

I guess if Rick Perry thinks this is Nixonian then he must think George Bush should have been impeached as well, as he did it 6 times. Reagan did it four times. C'mon Rick, get your head out of the sand. I have a hard time believing how such stupid people got elected to any kind of office.

Ha Rick!! That's good. "Nixionian". This reminds me of all the manufactured "scandals" the GOP tried to create during the Clinton Years; Travelgate, Filegate, Whitewater. Gov. Perry talkes about a Border Patrol Agent loosing his life. Okay, how about all the Servicemembers who lost their lives because of a War we embarked upon under false pretenses? Where are all those Iraqi WMDs?

The Republicans just can not live without some type of "War" going on. Now they have embarked on a war against the Attorney General.

The bottom line is the American people are tired of the ridiculous Right Wing partisanship that has overtaken the Republican Party.

And no it is not the Democrats! As imperfect as the Democratic Party is, they are not the main obstructionist in Washington, despite what the Buffoons, Rush and Hannity spout.

The Republicans have gone too far with this type of behavior, and they will regret their course of action come this fall.

This is a stupid comparison by Perry, but no one should really be surprised. Even Issa said on Fox News that there is no evidence of any coverup by the White House. So if he doesn't believe there's a coverup, any comparison to Nixon's use of executive privilege to cover up Watergate is absurd and obviously just a lying political move.

"If that's not Nixonian, then I don't know what is," Perry said." No Perry, and as you proved in your campaign, there is a whole lot more that you don't know besides.

As I read many of the above comments, I am most disappointed in those who post comments about this issue, that have not got all the facts. One person mentioned not letting ATF officals testify. How to you think this came to light, it was whistleblowers in the ATF who have been demoted or threatened by coming forth, the higher officials either took the 5th or have been shielded by Holder. Holder, himself has retracted at least three statements to the committees as being false, including that the Bush Attorney General knew of this operation. The operation under Bush Wide Reciever, ran for two years 2005-2007, with tracking devices in the guns, with the help of the Mexican Government and was found to not work as the tracking devices were being removed, thus the operation was shut down as a bad program, so why did anyone think that is might work, without help from Mexico and without tracking devices and with more guns. Those are the questions Congress wants answered. Holder and now Obama want to hide the answers to these questions. Those of you that blame the right wing people want to hide your heads in the sand and say only people like Nixon are corrupt. Yes, Nixon was bad, and I for one would like to think better of the present administration, but see lots of red flags in Fast and Furious.

They have, they are called whistle blowers. They are the ones who started this rolling ~1.5 years ago. They also tried to call Melson?? the former head of the ATF. Holder would not let him testify, hence the start of the coverup. I know this is all new to you. But try to get up to speed and THINKAGAIN

Watergate wasn't a 'second-rate burglary'. It was an attempt to subvert an election. Fast And Furious is deplorable, but it doesn't rise to that level.

This guy is the same guy that touted that he refused to accept "stimulous money" and Texas should leave the Union while Texas military men and women were serving in the Middle East. Shortly after he took the "stimulous money", didn't tell the people of Texas and never apologized to our military men and women for their support in representing and protecting Texas. I guess he has taken too many of his back pain drugs.

  17. vote the Tea Party OUT in 2012

this seems to be a "you got one of ours ( Alberto Gonzo) so we're gonna get one of yours being Eric Holder. Seeing that President Bush protected his buddy and brain Karl Rove with the same tatic and allowed Scotter Libby to be their fall guiy, for someone like Issa to whine about this is totally hypocritcal. Bush would not even pardon Libby upon leaving office only to the displeasure of Cheney and Rove is walking around a free man because of executive priviledge. GOP with their "it's ok when we do it but not when Obama does it" mantra need to give it a rest and start working on a jobs bill something they will NOT do before election time for certain. Of course these facts go WAY over Perry's head.

Operation Wide Reciever was started in 2006 and ended in 2007 ! Fast and Furious was started March 24 2009 and was implemented by Holder and the Obama regime ! A quick google search will confirm this ! To say Fast and Furious was started by Bush is blatantly wrong !

I can't believe some people's stupidity here, Obama and Holder are criminals and should be impeached and charged with a crime, this goes beyond Nixon, a border patrol officer, actually 2 have been murdered with F&F guns, no murders happened from Watergate. This is not politics this is real. Also Bush admin used a similar program but the mexican government was aware of what was going on and guns were being tracked, the Bush admin realized it was not working and stopped. Obama and Holder picked it up with no mexican government knowledge or help and Americans as well mexicans were murdered, wake up people time to clean house.
