Washington (CNN) - Mitt Romney spent the presidential primary campaign trying to convince conservatives of his right-wing credibility on immigration issues.
He labeled rivals Newt Gingrich and Texas Gov. Rick Perry as soft on illegal immigrants for suggesting some leniency for specific categories, such as students or long-time community members. He rejected the DREAM Act that would provide a pathway to citizenship for some young illegal immigrants. He called part of Arizona's controversial immigration law a model for the rest of the country.
@California: "Bottom line, amnesty just compounds the problem. Fix the real problem first and that is the influx of illegals flooding into this coutnry."
First of all, it's not amnesty, because the children who were brought here did not break any laws by being brought here (their parents violated immigration laws, not them).
Second, Cali, it was under Reagan that the influx of illegal immigrants started and which he approved of for the sake of cheap labor for big-agra.
If you don't want illegal immigrants coming here, then stop hiring them.
There was a time, when Democrates controlled the white house, the senate, and the House. Then there was a time when Republicans controlled the white hose, the senate, and the House. During both of these times, nothing was done by either Party to help or hurt the hispanics. It is only when divisive Obama came on the scene that the immigration waters were stirrred/muddied. Obama, if anythign is superbly adapt at distracting the masses from the horriable condition of our Nation's Economy. A strong economy means more job openings for all workers. But Obama, the Economic Driver in Chief, has driven our Nation over 5 trillion dollars into an on going recession.
OK- Romney supporters explain to me one thing: Gov. Romney has been officially running for President for the last 6 years, how is that he still doesn't have a plan on immigration?!?
I just can't trust this guy in this difficult times. At least I know where the President stands. And yes that is with the people!
Why is it that immigration seems to bring out all the tinfoil hats. Consider the following:
@Showmeyerpapers apocolyptic rant, repleat with fun facts "they are responsible for 75% of the crime here in denver " and "they must have killed 250000Americans in the last 50 years"
@California ignoring facts "amnesty just compounds the problem" when the Dream Act only covers young people we would probably want to let in and NOT blanket amnesty and "the real problem... is the influx of illegals flooding into this coutnry" when the President has the most border patrol agents in history, the highest deportation rate in history, and net immigration is at it's lowest level in decades
Then, of course, you always have those who don't have enought class to pay the proper level of respect to the Office of the President of the United States, by refering to our President as "Hussein Obozo". Right @Wiredwierddisrespectfulandclassless? America, Love it or Leave it!
Naturally, the GOP will have difficulties with immigration. The GOP blocked via filibuster the Dream Act in the Senate (and now whine that Mr. Obama didn't work "with them"); in states like Arizona, the passed laws like SB 1070 that appeared to want to further, or multiply the criminality of being illegal in the U.S.; Mr. Romney has favored "self-deportation", while the GOP has pursued anti-voting laws that clearly target the (legal) poor and elderly. Face it- the GOP has pursued a "Whites only" mentality. Meanwhile, they lie about the federal government not doing its job- explain the highest rates of deportations, the lowest border crime, and the most Border Patrol and U.S. National Guard on the border-EVER. Sounds like the job is getting done to me. Knock off the "build the dang wall" nonsesne and maybe Americans will take the GOP seriously.
Wired- the exact same thing can be said about the GOP and Mr. Romney- win at all costs. Playing the game is what is wrecking America.
Mitt is working on the ultimate flip, you pander to the republicans who are trying to make all Hispanic people criminals during the primary and then have to somehow get the Hispanic vote in the general.
Alexithymic Mitt will be self-deporting on Nov. 7.
Most pple forget this country is built on the backs of immigrants. Someone commented to get to the route of the issue. I thought mexicans have a claim to this land, white pple came to this land and jacked the native americans and many were forced south to... Mexico... Jussaying
Every last one of us comes from an immigrant at some point in time....Obama's administration has deported more illegals than any other in history. So why is everyone crying? Keep getting rid or the law breakers, keep borders secure, legalized the productive ones make the naturalization process. less complex, and our history stays intact. Hell charge more money if you want and help cut the deficits!!!! Might have a chance if we get the do nothings put out of congress.
all of your righties that are calling for deportation fail to credit the present POTUS who has had MORE illegals deported than any and has also beefed up the border patrol. And inspite of that he STILL leads among Latino and Hispanic voters so he must be doing something right. Some of you need to look at your family history though because if it doesn't include Native Americans along the way you might be close to being illegal or at least anchor baby status.
Every time a republican speaks they're having some struggle or another. The ones I look forward to the most are the headlines where they are outraged over something. It'd be funny if they're heads would explode at this point.
Mitt is between a rock and a hard place on this one. The GOP base, who barely support him as is, is absolutely against anything short of forced expulsion for all non-white illegal immigrants. The Hispanic voters, who now outnumber African-American voters, are going to go 95% democrat if Romney toes the party line, and Romney cannot win if they do. So he will say this and that and not too specific on anything and mumble a lot.
Am I the only American who wishes this issue wasn't politicized and turned into something racial and ugly?
Romney is right...we need real reform. I
t is upsetting to many of us that non-citizens needs and 'rights' are more important than how those non-citizens are impacting our communities and Country.
What's wrong with this picture?
this is a pretty sticky wicket for Mitt and the GOP for several reasons. First of all it would be great for Mitt to try to win Latinos over to his side by running an ad that shows the truth of how Obama has deported MORE of their possible family members and friends than any other president, BUT his far right wing flank LOVES deportation of illegals, they just don't want to give Obama credit for doing because, well you know that would mean he might be a little tough on illegal immigration totally counter to what they have been saying he is. Then again if Mitt were to come out AGAINST deportation that would anger the right wing and he might lose them. Then the Latinos would STILL dislike him. Not a good deal for the GOP all around, yet with all the deportations and build up at the border Latinos still support Obama far over Romney, go figure!!
►Romney, GOP struggle with immigration issues◄
Ahh, and who should feel bad for them – "oh boo hoo, where's the tissues?"
Maybe if stuck with the TRUTH instead of "flip-flopping" all over the place
He would NOT be trying now to use his Etch-A-Sketch now in an effort to stay in this race
"I’m not familiar precisely with exactly what I said but I stand by what I said whatever it was...?"
"Voter ID, which is gonna allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania, done,"
"... I will VETO the Dream Act..."
And all of the above is too late to erase – that's what's killing Romney with all Americans including Immigrants!!
Obama 2012 – The Only Trusted Way Forward!
"The only right they have is not to be beaten on the ride home. Get em out of here or WE WILL!"
I'm with Sniffit on this one....I quadriple dog dare you.
"That is how we ended up with the most incompetent, inept, corrupt, union toady we have ever had as president,....."
You really need to get a life...Your ignorance is exceeded only by the GOP goofballs you support. Now go ahead and get back to that basement. We need intelligent discourse not your petulent name calling idiocy.
This country deserves mitt. I hope he takes away everyone's rights, while he outsources our jobs overseas. Go mitt! USA sucks.
@Showmeyerpapers – you should simply be ashamed of spreading this hateful nonsense! CNN, you should be too!
