Splitsville for Hunter and Edwards, Hunter says

(CNN) – Rielle Hunter said Tuesday that she and John Edwards, the former presidential candidate who fathered her child in an extramarital affair, have gone their separate ways.

"We are a family, but as of the end of last week, John Edwards and I are no longer a couple," Hunter said on ABC's "Good Morning America."

Her announcement comes the same day she launches her tell-all book about the relationship, 'What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter, and Me."

It also comes nearly two weeks following the Justice Department's decision to drop the remaining charges against Edwards over allegedly violating campaign finance laws to cover up the affair. The Justice Department decision came after Edwards' corruption trial ended in an acquittal and mistrial last month.

In August 2008, Edwards admitted to an affair with Hunter, a onetime videographer for his Democratic presidential bid. At the time, the former North Carolina senator denied paternity of the daughter she had given birth to six months earlier.

While Edwards and Hunter were seen together in a series of beach photos last week, Hunter said their relationship had now fallen apart–a decision she described as mutual.

"For my part in it, it's because I'm no longer interested in hiding, hiding our relationship, not living out in the–"she said, stopping herself. Saying the couple "had a lot of media scrutiny," Hunter added their situation was "complicated."

"It's hard, and it wears you down after a while," she said.

While she regrets "many things" in their romance, she argued she does "not regret loving him."

"We have lots of things to figure out," she said, referring to their four-year-old daughter, Quinn.

Responding to intense criticism over her new book, Hunter defended her decision to release the title and insisted she wanted to come out with her side of the story.

"There's so much misinformation and distortion and spin about this story, and people form opinions without knowing what really happened," she said.

She's a SKEEZER and a home-wrecker..............PERIOD!! And now she wants people to feel sorry for her – Give me a Break! As for Edwards, he's CHEATER and a home-destroyer who thinks about NO ONE but himself – not even his own children!!!

This story is for ET – it should no longer be on the Political Ticker but since it is.......

Nothing Hunter or Edwards is worth hearing. They were screwing each other while his wife was fighting for her life. Whether together or not, they deserve no attention as they are the lowest of the low. Maybe with some luck, their spawn will grow up to be human.

Rielle Hunter is pathetic. I wonder what her daughter (when she grows up) will think of her mother not only prostituting herself, but also selling the story of how she came into this world? I feel sorry for that girl with Rielle Hunter, a truly low life form for a mother, and John Edwards, a serial liar for a father.

She was a selfish woman then and she is mostly likely still. Her craving for attention will most likely undo her. I bet he wishes now he had avoided her. Men are weak. So sad for everyone. Not only did she ruin a political career, she (and he) hurt their families and didn't even use birth control. Selfish on so many levels. Pitiful.

anyone who buys this book and gives this woman a penny is contributing to the problem of her continuing to be in the media and getting attention... just what she wants. on a separate note: she wanted to tell the story for her daughter to know the truth.... what about the children of john and elizabeth... i believe 2 are still minors.... did they really need this going out public? it is detrimental to their development. but as usual ms. hunter cares only for herself and her offspring... no one else... not even her daughter's half siblings... her johnny's kids.
