House approves new highway funding/student loan bill

Washington (CNN) – The U.S. House on Friday passed a $109 billion transportation funding bill as part of a package that includes a measure holding down interest rates on federal student loans.

Both are priorities of President Barack Obama and came after rare bipartisan agreement in the deeply divided Congress. The package, which passed the House on a vote of 373-52, now goes to the Senate for final approval.

Republicans launch blitz against health care law

Washington (CNN) - Republicans launched a blistering attack Friday on the health care reform law upheld by the Supreme Court, seeking to rally their base's opposition to the measure to bolster their fortunes in the November election.

Using the court's finding that the centerpiece of the law - the individual mandate - amounted to a legal exercise of congressional taxing power, GOP leaders accused President Barack Obama and Democrats of deceiving the nation about the Affordable Care Act during debate on the measure in 2009 and 2010.

Santorum returns to Iowa, but not for Romney

(CNN) – Rick Santorum visited all 99 counties in Iowa before winning the most votes in the state's first-in-the-nation caucuses. In mid-July he'll return to the state, though his official schedule doesn't mention any events with now-presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney.

Santorum's trip was announced through the Red, White and Blue Fund, a super PAC that supported the former Pennsylvania senator during his bid for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination. The group billed the visit, slated July 10-11, as an opportunity to "say thank you to supporters, campaign on behalf of several Iowa candidates, and take part in a press conference."

Republicans, Democrats spar over health care fee

(CNN) – While Democrats say the issue has been settled, Republicans argue the debate over health care reform is not over yet.

One day after the Supreme Court announced its decision to uphold the controversial health care law passed in 2010, the GOP is pushing a message Friday that the law imposes a substantial tax hike on the American public.

Romney's health care mandate included tax penalty

Washington (CNN) - Republicans are seizing on the individual mandate's penalty in the newly upheld health care law as proof President Obama broke his promise not to raise taxes on middle class Americans.

In the Supreme Court ruling on the law, Chief Justice John Roberts said the penalty on Americans who opt against buying health insurance is actually a tax, therefore making the individual mandate constitutional. Congress, Roberts reasoned, has the authority to assess taxes.

Romney's latest campaign surrogate: Hillary Clinton

(CNN) – Mitt Romney's latest ad features an opponent familiar to President Barack Obama – Hillary Clinton.

The ad uses video of 2008 presidential candidate Clinton campaigning against candidate Obama in Cincinnati ahead of the Ohio primary. Clinton accused Obama of "blatantly false" attacks against her in campaign mailers, which Romney is now using to highlight a recent fact check by the Washington Post calling one of Obama's current ads "misleading, unfair and untrue."

GOP: No LOL over OFA's 'BFD' T(-shirt)

(CNN) – An adviser for Mitt Romney took a shot Friday at the president's re-election campaign, Obama For America (OFA), over a t-shirt it's selling online about the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the federal health care law.

The shirt, in big letters, reads: "Health reform still a BFD."

Fund-raising flurry after Supreme Court ruling

(CNN) – Both presidential campaigns are citing fund-raising spikes following the Supreme Court's decision upholding President Barack Obama's health care law.

Mitt Romney's organization said Friday morning it had raised $4.6 million online, and Obama's operation, while not revealing specific numbers, said they had surpassed Team Romney's announced total.
