(CNN) – New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, known for his candor, snapped at a reporter Saturday while taking issue with his question at a press conference.
Reporters were told the governor would only answer questions about a major problem at a water treatment plant, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.
Yet one reporter proceeded to ask an unrelated question involving the state legislature, as seen in video of the press conference from Monmouth County.
Christie, cutting him off, said: "Did I say on topic? Are you stupid? On topic, on topic. Next question."
As the reported tried to follow up, the Republican governor again interjected and ended the press conference.
"Thank you all very much, and I'm sorry for the idiot over there. Take care," he said before walking away.
Christie, who is rumored to be a potential GOP vice presidential pick, has made headlines in the past for growing confrontational with reporters or audience members at events.
Mitt Romney, himself, teased Christie about his brash behavior Tuesday night when the two appeared together at a fund-raiser.
"That man really is something, you know that? I was hoping someone in here would start to heckle him so I could watch him go to town here. But you know better, don't ya? What an extraordinary leader," Romney said, according to pool reports.
"What an extraordinary leader"??? Really? Leaders aren't afraid to answer questions, nor do they duck reporters and run from press conferences. Pathetic.
Gov Christie is a disgrace. Pride goes before a fall. Also a patient man is better than the man that takes a city in battle
Christie's aggressive manner is why he will never achieve high office nationally. Except for a segment of the population pretty much concentrated in the urban northeast, imitating Don Corleone or one of his lieutenants is not amusing.
Of course we have a governor here in Maine who comes across as one of the soldiers in Christie's imaginary family. Christie's own stupidity in his response to a question he didn't want to answer looks polished compared to the garbage LePage spews.
Christie will go down in history as the most uncouth governor ever. Obviously money does not buy class. If he has to belittle and insult to get his point across, there is something wrong with his message. Didn't NJ outlaw bullying? Well, Mr. Governor, contrary to Republican dogma, you are not above the law and not any better than the people of this state. It would be wise to show a little more control in politics and maybe other aspects of your life, mainly your unhealthy bad temper.
An extraordinary leader? In what way is calling someone an idiot leadership?
