Bachmann on VP spot: 'Not for me to make that decision'

(CNN) – Former presidential candidate Michele Bachmann did not deny Monday whether she was being vetted for the job of Mitt Romney's running mate.

"Whoever it is that he chooses to bring in as his V.P., it will be a highly competent person who could step in at a moment's notice and assume the responsibilities of the White House," the Minnesota congresswoman said on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight."

Pressed further if she was being considered for the gig, Bachmann, whose name has not been frequently mentioned as a potential contender, left it up to the presumptive GOP nominee and his team to make a comment.

"Well, that's something for the campaign to answer on," she said. "That's not for me to make that decision, and that announcement."

While veep-talk has certainly been a swirling force on the campaign trail in recent weeks, Romney has only confirmed his campaign was vetting Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, though many more are expected to be on his list.

The former Massachusetts governor announced he was considering Rubio in mid-June after some Republicans grew upset over a report claiming the senator was not in the running.

Other potential candidates have kept mum on the veepstakes, refusing to say whether or not they may have a hat in the ring.

For her part, Bachmann was critical of Romney when the two competed for the Republican presidential nomination. As a candidate, Bachmann initially ran with large tea party appeal, frequently bucking what she described as the more establishment faction of the party that Romney represented.

The congresswoman did not endorse Romney until early May, several weeks after former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum dropped out of the race, a move that essentially locked up the nomination for Romney.

Asked repeatedly why she had held out in her support for Romney, Bachmann declined to go into specifics but maintained she was working "behind the scenes, bringing together all factions of our party."

If you really pay attention to her answers, she did confirm that she is not in the run; she said "it will be a highly competent person who could step in at a moment's notice and assume the responsibilities of the White House", that is enough for me to know that she is not being considered.

Bachmann would make Joe Biden look like the sanest person on the planet.
But then that's the Republican mind set: We've got to have one that's better than yours, what ever it is.
Biden may be a doofus, but Backmann beats him hands down in that department! Winning!!!

Please NO. I do not plan on voting for Romney myself, but in case he ends up winning, the idea of Bachmann being that close to real power is downright terrifying.

"Whoever it is that he chooses to bring in as his V.P., it will be a highly competent person who could step in at a moment's notice and assume the responsibilities of the White House."

This categorically eliminates Michelle Bachmann as a candidate.

Bachman is a throw back to the middle ages who aspires to create theocracy in America, to impress her religious beliefs on others, and to infuse pseudoscience into science classes. It is unfathomable to me why anyone would consider her for vice president. If Romney chooses her he is doomed, not only for the present election but for any office he might aspire to in the future.

When you can't secure a win from your own State during a campaign, how in the H... does Bachmann or anyone else expect her to be a VP pick, she's pathetic.

Somestimes you really have to wonder if the GOP said last year, "ah, the hell with it, we're not going to win anyway, let's get that dope Romney up there and have some fun if we're going to lose our shirt anyway."

Bachmann would be a terrible choice. After selecting Sarah Palin, the Republican party would further diminish itself with such a selection. Are there no intelligent, reasonable, educated women in the R's that are not a Tea Partier, a far-right wing fanatic or a racist? Perhaps there are but they must remain hidden and silent as any act of reasonable thinking or honorable legislation by any memmber of the Republican party, male or female, is the "kiss of death." What has happened to the once-proud Republican party?

OMG – This woman is scarier than Palin was! On the plus side for Minnesota, this would get her out of Congress. I'm so thankful she doesn't represent my district.

I'm sure many many people are vetted for complimentary reasons, to be inclusive and gain allies. It is part of building a team, something the liberal loons in here wouldn't know anything about. But in reality, Bachmann is likely very far down on the list so she has very little chance. She would certainly be better than crazy Joe. He's lost his marbles.

Bachmann is as wise and more politically saavy than any of the Oboomer bunch and has learned more about politics than most I have seen come of age this past couple of years. She would make Romney a wise choice of a VP running mate!

with this ridiculous comment, my coffee is now on the desk in front of me I laughed so hard. As with 95% of the commenters here......PLEASE Flip take this know-nothing on as your VP

    What decision? What announcement?
You were asked a simple yes or no question. Quit trying to create unnecessary melodramatic build-up.
By the way Crazy Eyes, the ONLY thing that Romney is 100%, absolutely. positively, no-doubt-about-it-not-gonna-happen certain of is that he is NOT going to win in 2012 and YOU are not going to be his Veep.
    Thanks for playing.
