CNN Poll: Economic optimism jumping

Washington (CNN) - Although most Americans think that the economy is currently in poor shape, economic optimism has skyrocketed since last fall, according to a new national poll.

And a CNN/ORC International poll released Tuesday also indicates that while voters are divided on whether President Barack Obama or Republican challenger Mitt Romney would do a better job on the economy, Romney holds an edge among crucial independent voters in the race for the White House.

Fehrnstrom's sharp quips, elbows help Romney

Washington (CNN) - It was 2002, and things weren't going well for Mitt Romney, then a candidate for Massachusetts governor.

Allen to pass on GOP convention

(CNN) – George Allen, who's running in a heated Senate race in Virginia, will not be attending the Republican National Convention in August, his campaign confirmed Tuesday.

"Since we are locked in a close race and can't be in two places at once, the focus will continue to be listening and meeting with Virginia families, veterans, and small business leaders on the campaign trail," campaign spokeswoman Emily Davis said.

Martha's Vineyard is a no go this summer for First Family vacation

Washington (CNN) - A senior administration official tells CNN the first family will not be vacationing on Martha's Vineyard this summer as they have done for the past three years.

There had been plenty of speculation about the president's plans given the potential image clash during an election year, of a vacation at an expensive estate on a posh New England island.

Instead of an extended vacation the president is likely to take some long weekends this summer, but where and when is still unclear the official said.

Independents thrilled with neither Obama, Romney health reform plans

(CNN) - Independent voters largely disapprove of or are indifferent to the plans for the US health care system of President Barack Obama and presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney, according to a new poll.

Rust Belt autoworkers let loose on Romney, Obama

DEARBORN, Michigan (CNN) - Steve Bengelsvorf and Terry Flynn are chatting over beers on a hot, humid Wednesday night at Bamboozles, a Dearborn, Michigan, bar and restaurant, and a common pit stop for nearby factory workers.

Both these clean-cut men sitting at the bar in polo-style shirts have a lot in common. They work at the nearby Severstal steel company. They're nearing retirement. And they both have strong opinions about who the next president should be.
