Romney reacts to 'kick in the gut' jobs report

Wolfeboro, New Hampshire (CNN) - A jobs report showing lukewarm hiring in June is a "kick in the gut" to American workers, presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney said in New Hampshire Friday.

"It's consistent with what I've heard as I've gone across the country and met with families in their homes, in cafes and restaurants and in break rooms," Romney said. "American families are struggling. There's a lot of misery in America today, and these numbers understate what people are feeling and the amount of pain which is occurring in middle class America."

Romney made remarks and took some reporter questions at Bradley's Hardware in downtown Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, about a mile and a half from the Romney family's lakefront home. The candidate, along with his large extended family, has spent the last week there on vacation.

In his comments, Romney slammed President Barack Obama, his opponent for the White House, as not doing enough to foster growth and encourage employers to hire workers.

"The highest corporate tax rates in the world do not create jobs," Romney said. "Highest regulatory burdens in our nation's history - those do not create jobs. Trade policies that have not opened up new markets for American goods, particularly in Latin America, those don't create new jobs. Failing to effectively crack down on China for cheating and stealing American jobs, that has not helped."

"The president's policies have not gotten America working again, and the president's going to have to stand up and take responsibility for it," Romney continued.

Obama, who is traveling on a bus tour through the Rust Belt, was expected to react to Friday's jobs numbers at his first stop in Ohio. Romney mentioned the tour, asking, "How do you go across Pennsylvania and Ohio and not talk about being serious about creating jobs through manufacturing policies that make America more attractive for investment and growth?"

Romney said as president, he would use different strategies to help remedy the dire economic straits many Americans face.

"It doesn't have to be this way," Romney said. "The president doesn't have a plan. He hasn't proposed any new ideas to get the economy going. Just the same old ideas of the past that have failed. I have a plan. My plan calls for action that will get America working again and create good jobs, both near term and long term."

Romney emerged from his campaign break on July 4th to march in an Independence Day parade, but has otherwise held no public events. Romney's son Tagg accompanied his father to the hardware store for his statement.

Bradley's Hardware, which has stood on Railroad Avenue in Wolfeboro since 1950, is a family owned business that employs twelve people.

Answering a question from a reporter about taking a vacation during the heat of the campaign, Romney responded that he wanted more Americans to be able to take breaks.

"I'm delighted to be able to take a vacation with my family," Romney said. "I think all Americans appreciate the memories that they have with their children and their grandchildren. I hope that more Americans are able to take vacations, and if I'm president of the United States, I'm going to work very hard to make sure we have good jobs for all Americans who want good jobs, and as part of a good job the capacity to take a vacation now and then with their loved ones."

The U.S. is in a tough spot. The worst two guys to possibly have going on it now. One doesn't seem to know that he was doing while the other uses every loop hole in the tax code to avoid paying taxes to the country that he extracted all these funds from. If it is ever reveled by the Global Banks [and his own] that Mitt has a billion stashed away, it would not surprise me.

I don't blame the man for getting rich, I blame him for getting it on the backs of those he exploited out of a living. All these pretentious wannabee Cape Codders amuse me. You work hard for your 30k while being unappreciated by the likes of W. Mitt Romney so what makes you think that he actually cares about you?

Yeah... We've heard this corporate sob story before. Then do you remember when we bailed out all those banks & Wall Street? You remember... All those 'job creators.' Yeah they took all that money and didn't hire, lend or invest it. Thanks for playing fellas.

And remember when we let them run amok and police themselves by gutting and not enforcing regulation? Does the global economic crisis and the Gulf oil spill sound like things we'd like to see again? Well that's what happens folks.

This is the same empty rhetoric we hear out of all politicians mouths – no matter the party affiliation. Mitt is simply less convincing... Or maybe it's that we're beginning to say enough already.

oh, wait...that unemployment # is a lot better than it would have been had it continued to slide under GOP continuation. recall that the government grew with the Bush family, and jobs went swimming for overseas– and those that hung around were eaten by sharks in US waters– like Bain Capital....

So if someone is rich because they worked for it, then their an awful person???? You ppl are crazy. Do you think Obama is poor? You need to do your own research & stop being mindless drones listening everything the Media tells you to believe. I personally know someone in my home town that was accused of some things, & the media had twisted it around to make the story more appealing. RESEARCH, RESEARCH!!!!! By heck don't go out & get rich, ppl will hate you. Jealous.......

Put the strawman away with your rightous indignatin Rosie. The problem is the way mittens made his millions – using other people's money to buy and gut businesses and send the jobs to slave-wage nations, then pocketing the fired American workers' pensions. Maybe if YOUR pension was cooling its heals in mittens' Swiss bank account you would feel differently.

He commenting about the highest tax rate when he pays the smallest (13%) and the bulk of his money is overseas. Give me a break. The jobs are anemic because of Congress, they refused to pass the President's job bill....that is part of the plan to make him a one term president. They have failed and the president will be re-elected because people can see thru the nonsense, Citizens United decision with these Super pacs have made the 99% more determined, and the #1 reason they are about to nominate a real loser. Ask yourself how can this man take the oath of office to uphold the laws of this country when he is stashing his excess cash overseas and finding dishonest ways to do it. What other dishonest ways will he use to outsource jobs for his rich friends and corporations and repeal all the regulations that are in place now. We cannot trust him.

Romney created a lot of jobs when he was head of Bain Capital when he helped close those factories and ship the work overseas those factories didn't demolish themselves. I have a friend in the demolition bussiness who made a killing thanks to Romney

To the troll spreading the 47 in job creation in Mass.- please note that he had 4.5% unemployment at the time better than when he started

During a time when the economy was booming – yet he was STILL FORTY SEVENTH IN JOB CREATION!!!! Not really something a "job creator" should brag about.

OMG! Romney, when the Supreme Court decided on healthcare reform, he swore that his presidency, right on day ONE will start by acting to repeal it. He did not hide that it was his utmost priority. Now he goes around and tells everyone, his utmost priority is jobs. OMG! For those who think it will rain jobs as soon as he takes office, I have news. Don't expect the quality of new jobs to compare with what Americans were used to. It is no secret that Big Business has held back on jobs to see Republicans grab power. Those might loosen up a bit, just to make some point: Look Romney is creating jjobs. "Look Ma, no hands!!!!"

You will see jobs that have no benefits, poor working conditions, less time off, no stability, many part time jobs and low pay. Walmart might be the new model. Good luck, Americans. I am retired, but I pray for my family.

  19. Really Obama???

You libs crack me up. You follow Obama blindly hoping he gets better. W
here's the job after the 787Bill stimlus? Nowhere. Now Obama care let's look at that huge tax increase.
    1. The ObamaCare Medical Device Manufacturing Tax – 2.3 percent tax on medical device makers will raise the price of pacemakers, prosthetic limb, stent, and operating table. NICE JOB!

2.The ObamaCare Medicare Payroll Tax increase – This tax sucks employers to the tune of $86 billion over the next ten years. Yeah this should get more people hired.

    3. The ObamaCare Surtax on Investment Income – The new ObamaCare surtax takes the top capital gains rate to 23.8 percent and top dividend rate to 43.4 percent. so if you licky enough to have investmens or make a profit selling your home Obama is taking more of that.

    Great Job Obama!

Can't wait to get this idiot out of office.

Another kick in the middle class gut is Romney's record of firing workers (while lining his pockets with millions), and outsourcing jobs to foreign cheap labor.
