Attorney General Holder pledges to protect the right to vote

(CNN) - Attorney General Eric Holder promised Saturday to do all in his power to protect Americans' right to vote.

Speaking at the annual conference of the National Council of La Raza in Las Vegas, he praised the group and encouraged it to keep holding politicians' feet to the fire. La Raza is the largest national Latino civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States.

Republicans hold 'Super Saturday' events in 12 states

(CNN) – Republicans gathered Saturday in a dozen battleground states for voter contact programs, an event they called "Super Saturday," the Republican National Committee said.

Their efforts included telephone banks and knocking on doors to contact potential voters.

Barney Frank marries longtime partner

(CNN) - – U.S. Rep. Barney Frank married his longtime partner Saturday evening, becoming the first member of Congress to marry someone of the same gender while in office.

Frank's office said the 16-term Massachusetts Democrat married Jim Ready, a small business owner and photographer from Maine at a Newton, Massachusetts ceremony officiated by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick.

Portman, Rubio to hold fundraisers for Romney

(CNN) - Two potential running mates for Mitt Romney will headline fundraisers for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee this week, sources told CNN on Saturday.

Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio will headline at least one fundraiser for Romney in Boston on Monday. On Saturday, he was in New Hampshire for a state Republican Party event.

Team Obama uses Romney's June haul to spur donors

(CNN) - Vice President Joe Biden called campaign donors to action on Saturday, warning them that Mitt Romney's campaign was out-raising the president's reelection effort.

"Building this campaign today is more important than it was a few days ago," he wrote in an e-mail to supporters. "We can still win even while getting outraised by these guys. But we've got to keep it close."

In new ad, Obama hits Romney over outsourcing

(CNN) - A television advertisement released Saturday points to a newspaper report that Mitt Romney's former financial firm helped companies outsource, and questions whether the presumptive Republican presidential nominee would be as tough on China as he has pledged.

"Mitt Romney's not the solution," the narrator says in the 30-second spot. "He's the problem."

Congressional candidate to carry Olympic torch

(CNN) - Jose Hernandez has been around the world more than 200 times. Next week, he'll make a much shorter - but significant - trip.

Hernandez, an astronaut and a Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, will carry the Olympic torch in England on Monday.

Contrasting economic messages in weekly addresses

(CNN) - President Barack Obama touted in his weekly address the transportation and student loan measure he recently signed into law, while Republican Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle urged her congressional colleagues to do more in aid of the struggling economy - including repeal of Obama's health reform law.

Obama recorded his message while campaigning in Ohio this past week, and pointed to the law which funds transportation projects nationwide, extends lowered federal student loan interest rates and reauthorizes the national flood insurance program.
