Poll: Obama holds slight edge over Romney in swing states

(CNN) – A new poll released Sunday indicates the presidential race between Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama is still tight in a dozen major battlegrounds.

According to the latest survey by USA Today/Gallup, the president has a small advantage over his Republican rival, 47% to 45%, in 12 key states. The two-point margin falls well within the poll's sampling error.

Obama's edge over Romney represents the same two-point margin he held when the same poll was last conducted in May.

When zooming out to include voters from the other states, the gap expands to a four-point margin in favor of Obama, 48% to 44%.

However, political observers and both campaigns say the race will ultimately be decided by a select portion of swing states.

Gallup surveyed voters in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, New Hampshire, Ohio, Nevada and Virginia - all states that CNN rates as toss-ups on its Electoral Map.

The poll also included voters in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and New Mexico - four states CNN considers leaning toward Obama - as well as voters in North Carolina, a state leaning toward Romney, according to a CNN analysis.

Also of note, the poll shows the barrage of attack ads on swing-state airwaves has caused a slight change in voters' minds.

One in 12 say the commercials have altered their opinion about Obama or Romney, with 76% of them now favoring the president compared to 16% who say they switched to Romney.

Both campaigns have taken out state-specific commercials in such states as Iowa, Virginia and Ohio.

For the USA TODAY survey, Gallup questioned 1,200 registered voters in the dozen swing states by telephone June 22-29, with a sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points. For non-swing states, 2,404 registered voters were interviewed during the same time period.

    I don't think many Americans have begun "vetting" Mitt Romney yet. In September, as many of his more negative "aspects" become "common knowledge", I would bet Mitt's numbers will begin to sink.

    Mitt has changed his position on every main issue in America repeatedly just to fit the moment. He has back-tracked on promises he made to voter before, which is a trend and an obsession with seeking power at any cost.

    I love campaign ads for Comic Relief but come on people don't let these guys buy your vote. Use Google and Bing, go to a library, read something that does not conform with the bubble you live in and broaden your mind. Trust me plenty of people are voting against their best interest. Its really sad and these reports will only get more of these ads to air

    Well, having foreign bank accounts don't really help. Doesn't Romney believe in the American banking system ? Why would he have bank accounts in other countries ? Was he trying to evade taxes ?
    Also this outsourcing stuff he is currently fighting against, was he a member of Bain Capitals when jobs were being outsourced ? He needs to come clean.

    Why? because the last thing we need is an Outsourcer and chief. Rmoney wants to cut Government jobs, how can he do that? Outsource, but I wonder if he ever thought about how many vets are employeed in the government? Is he going to outsource those that have fought for this great country? Is he going to have his sons serve?

    Beohner said it right, Romney is unelectable. DON'T WASTE TIME OR MONEY ON HIM.

    This election has one smart choice: President Obama.

    He saved the US financial infrastructure from collapse;

    Equal work for equal pay for Woman:
    Affordable Health Care for all citizens.
    People with pre-existing conditions can buy health insurance.
    children under 26 stay on parents' insurance;
    remove insurance life time cap;
    senior drug donut hole closed;
    repeal DADT;
    accept equal marraige rights;
    compassion for dreamer;
    created 4.4M private sector jobs in 28 months, a remarkable turnaround from Bush's job loss of 800,000 PER MONTH in 2008.
    Today, Bin Laden is DEAD, and GM is Alive, so is Chrysler, Ford, and all the car suppliers.

    Re-electing President Obama is a natural, logical choice.

    DON'T LET GOP DONAR FOOL YOU WITH MONEY, YOU VOTING RIGHT CANNOT BE BOUGHT. TELL IT TO THEIR FACE.

    When most of Obama's ads are fabricated about Romney ,it is sad so many are buying into his
    negative messages Many of the Obama teams ads have been revealed as inaccurate. The Washington Post retracted their vicious distortions. If a president has no record to run on, what do you expect.? Obamacare was one big deception and hopefulluy the citizens of our country will eventually know the the truth and realize our government can not control every aspect of our lives, especially Health Care. How is this Law going to help the middle class?
    . Taxes on prespriction drug compaies, medical equiptment, and some hospitals. that will be pased on to the cost of policy holder. We are already seeing less benefits. %00 billion taken from Medicar. The CBO has already said the cost are much greated than projected. Obamacare was a total deception and how can you be truthful to the American people when Dememocrats were so deceptive and did not even read the bill.Most of the big taxes are hidden. I truly beleve when more decepion is exposed such as the WHite house leaks, and details on Fast and Furious,
    the American people will wake up, and discover that everything the Obama adminstration does is only politically motivated. How sad to watch your country crumble before your eye? IN addition, there has not been a budget in the past two years, and we have a 15 tillion dollar deb. Sacry!

    The polls are not well conducted and at this point meaningless! What will be interesting is to see the polls after Romney picks his running mate and after the debates… Than wait a little longer until November and we will see what percentage of the voters are smart voting for class and ability and character and how many prefer lies and misrepresentation and vote against the country and their own interest by giving Romney their vote.

    The swing states need to wake up and stop drinking the Kool Aid that Obama is giving out.

    It's hard to even think we have people out there that still thinks Obama is still walking on water. Carter is saying thanks Obama i will not go down in history as the worst President this country has ever had.

    I voted for Obama in 2008 and will not make the same mistake twice.

    The silent majority needs to step up and vote in November and let our voices be heard.
