Trump to receive local GOP award ahead of party convention

(CNN) – Business mogul Donald Trump will be recognized as the 2012 Statesman of the Year by the Sarasota, Florida, Republican Party the day before the Republican National Convention opens in Tampa next month.

Tickets for the August 26 dinner go as high as $1,000 per person, which include a private meet-and-greet with Trump, according to an invitation flyer for the event.

Trump has endorsed the presidential run of presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney, though Trump's repeated questioning of President Barack Obama's birthplace and birth certificate have overshadowed events where they have appeared together.

Trump initially flirted with his own run for the presidency, but dropped out of the field in the spring.

He has appeared this year at state-level Republican Party events, such as a fundraiser for the North Carolina GOP last month, where he stood by his so-called "birther" comments and said waging war with Iran may be "good politics" for the incumbent.

Rep. Vern Buchanan, who is the subject of four federal and Congressional investigations into his business practices, has donated at least $15,000 in conjunction with the event, according to the August invitation. Buchanan is the head of fundraising for the National Republican Congressional Committee, which works to elect Republicans to Congress.

@Russ: "This is so funny. Republicans don't know the definition of statesman any better than they know economics, foreign affairs, tax policy, etc."

    Perfect post – thanks!

Funny that the GOP still likes to claim they are the "family values" party – giving this award to a man who has been married three times!

Spec-tac-ular! A loudmouth, empty-headed, Birther, who's convinced he's God's gift to everyone, declared a "statesman" by an obvious crook! If you heard it on the Daily Show, you'd say, "Oh, come on, John, you're over the top on this one." Looks like Alzheimer's is epidemic in Sarasota.

In all seriousness, I do think the GOP has been rolling out all their absurdities with the plan to subtly and not-so-subtly steal the election, after which they will claim the "will of the people" supports GOP "heroes" like Trump; further tax cuts for the rich even though they don't work; further elimination of social programs; turning back the clock on reproductive rights; and every other backward-thinking, failed policy they propose (including the Ryan budget which will not only harm the most vulnerable in our society, but create massive debt (just look at the Congressional Budget Office report; under one scenario, by 2050 the Ryan budget would result in the debt held by the public more than 200 percent of GDP).

It is absolutely necessary for every Independent, Democrat and thinking Republican to GET OUT AND VOTE FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA and majorities in the House and Senate in November 2012.

    What a joke!
You can bet Trump will be a headline speaker at the GOP convention and he will spew his birther garbage and Mitt will smile and lap it up. It is idiocy like that that makes me sure Obama will be re-elected.

The award tells us a lot more about the awarders than about the awardee.

Donald Trump as statesman of the year, is akin to Adolf Hitler as humanitarian of the year.

The fact is the GOP has no one else to give this award to so the loud mouth DT is a logical choice for them. Talk about out-of-touch.
Our founding fathers believed the government is here to serve the people. The GOP manages to twist that around today by having the people serves their chosen few individuals.

The Republican strategy must be to make Democrats overconfident. Are Republicans in Sarasota, Florida sending a message to Romney by naming Trump Statesman of the Year the day before the Republican National Convention opens in Tampa?

Best blowhard, maybe. Most egocentric. Stupidest birther. Best liar about being a self-made man after inheriting 30 million from his father, blowing it, and having to borrow money from his siblings. His hair is a better statesman.

Statesman of what? What has happened to our country, and to the GOP? Are there any intelligent, thinking people in that party left? Let's hope the silent majority votes in November.

Trump is as much a statesman as Romney is an intellectual.
