Under attack, Romney accuses Obama of cronyism

Pittsburgh, Penn. (CNN) - As Mitt Romney's opponents continued to hammer him over details of his business record, the presumptive GOP nominee sought to change the conversation Monday with sharp criticism of President Barack Obama's record in office.

After a weekend dominated by family time, Monday was also a banner day of fund-raising for Romney. He headlined two events that raised roughly $3.7 million, according to pool reports.

Romney's new attacks came on yet another day when the presidential candidate found himself pushing back against Democratic attacks on his record at private equity firm Bain Capital.

Speaking to donors in Louisiana and Mississippi, Romney renewed his criticism of some loan guarantees made by the Obama administration, especially to automobile company Fisker. During a luncheon fund-raiser in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Romney suggested Obama had steered tax dollars to businesses whose owners supported him.

"It is taking your tax dollars and putting it in businesses owned by contributors to his campaign, and that is smelly at best," Romney told an audience of 40 people, who each paid $50,000 to hear him speak. "It stinks."

The former Massachusetts governor further fueled vice presidential rumors by appearing alongside Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal at the luncheon in Louisiana. An aide to the presumptive presidential nominee tweeted a picture of Romney with Jindal - who's widely believed to be in contention to become Romney's number two.

Jindal blasted Obama for running what he called "an increasingly desperate and negative campaign."

"This president can't run on his record so he has to lie about Gov. Romney's record," Jindal said. "He's been the most liberal, most incompetent president since Jimmy Carter was in the White House. No disrespect to Jimmy Carter, by the way."

Later in the evening, in Jackson, Mississippi, Romney's state finance chairman announced Romney's second fund-raiser had raised more than $1.7 million, which he said was a state record.

An Obama spokeswoman defended Obama's loan guarantee program and accused Romney of turning to attacks in an attempt change the subject and avoid answering questions about his record at Bain.

"Launching a warmed over and false line of attack that has already been debunked by independent news organizations and fact-checkers won’t help him," said Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith.

  1. Has Mittens "RETROACTIVELY RETIRED" as the GOVERNOR of MA back to before he signed ROMNEYCARE???

    Cronies and croynism???

    Does Team Robme REALLY want to go down this path?

    You were at a fund raiser funded by no less than DICK CHENEY, you PUTZ. That would be the same DICK CHENEY that lied to start a war so Halliburtion could make billion off no-bid contracts.

    The same DICK CHENEY that had 5 deferments during the Viet Nam era?

    You still want to go down that path with YOUR record during the Viet Nam era AND the five trust fund babies that did NO military service for this country when it was engaged in 2 wars??

    We will discuss "cronyism" if you wish, trust me!!!

    Oh, willard. Just stop it. Didn't you do exactly the same thing when you "saved the olympics"?? Didn't you try to funnel contracts to Staples? And, didn't Bain funnel cash to Huntsman for a hostile takeover deal after Huntsman gave a few million dollars to the olympics?? AND, what's with the contributions from Adelson?? He is a crook and is being investigated for corruption. I guess he wants you to win the presidency so that you can call off the investigators or give him a presidential pardon. What a tangled web!!

    Yo, Poogush, or whatever, you may like to know that Nate shows Ohio, Virginia, Iowa and Florida as trending blue with all but FL as over 60% chance.

    Not to mention that today's Ohio poll shows President Obama up by 3 and Mr 1% behind by 3, just the reverse of last month's Ohio poll.

    It is beginning to look like the good folks of Ohio, do not want a liar and/or possible felon as their President.

    Trust me, I am wearing my sorrowful face.

    Since Romney has nothing to offer the People in solutions, policy plans, or a single platform principle; all he is left to do is to attack President Obama with increasingly false and weak accusations. Romney is no leader. He is a corporate puppet who is invested in himself and in every foreign nation other than the U.S. I stand with President Obama who has a proven success record and one for investing all his efforts in helping the American People recover from the Republican economic and war disasters. Romney is a Republican embarrassment even they do not really support.

    There is no way Romney could send jobs overseas because Obama the job killer has made them extinct. Looks like Romney will have to do what Obama couldn't do, he will create them here first then after 8 years the dems will probably screw it up again and bring in more government jobs and more spending since they can't balance a budget.

    Obama = 7.9% – 8.2% (3 years) + trying hard to clean up 8 years of Bush’s mess

    Bush = 14,000 – 6,500 (8 years)
    Obama = 6,500 – 12,362.23 (3 years)

    Bush = 250BIL credit – 11TRIL debt (8 years)
    Obama = 10TRIL debt – 14TRIL debt (3 years)

    Bush = 0Wars – 2Wars (8 years)

    "An Obama spokeswoman defended Obama's loan guarantee program and accused Romney of turning to attacks in an attempt change the subject and avoid answering questions about his record at Bain."

    And Obama has spent how many millions in "attack ads" against Romney? All to avoid answering questions about his policies that are destroying this country.

  8. No Disrespect, Of Course

    Romney now has his little lap dog, the Governor of Louisiana, whining as his surrogate. Romney could at least pick a better person to whine for him than the stupid little governor of the backward State of Louisiana since it is:
    (1) 50th in the nation when it comes to women's pay.
    (2) 50th in the nation with the highest rate of death from breast cancer.
    (3) 50th in the nation in the percent of students growing up in a household where at least one adult has completed a bachelor’s or associate’s degree.
    (4) 50th in the nation for peacful state.
    (5) 50th in the nation on the bipartisan Camelot Index (a measure of economic vitality, education, health, crime, and governance).

    Shall I go on about Louisiana and its dead last ranking in the United States for just about anything you can name?

    No disrespect to Bobby Jindal, by the way.

    Romney is running out of things to say about Obama. May be it is time for him to come out of the closet and reveal who he really is and while he is at it he can release his tax statements and atone for all his pandering and lies.

    "It is taking your tax dollars and putting it in businesses owned by contributors to his campaign, and that is smelly at best," Romney told an audience of 40 people, who each paid $50,000 to hear him speak. – Isn't this the epitome of the Kettle calling itself black? At least he could have told that to a group of people NOT paying Romney to see him speak.

    It would be interesting to see how many Mormons Romney has employed at Bain in his job eliminating ventures, since his latest cry is cronyism.

    If Romney wasn't lying or twisting the truth...he would be completely silent.....wouldn't that be nice??/ It would work for him because then he'd keep his foot out of his mouth!!!! This man cannot talk about what kind of president he would be or specifically what he could do for the country and the people because he DOESN'T know!!!.. When asked one of these questions he mumbles around about waiting to see how things go later. This isn't a president!! Is this the man you want deciding your medical care ,schooling for the kids, taxes..retirement pensions.....Really????Romney????????!!!!!!

    I thought GOP & Romney wanted to get rid of government waste. Well they just spent $52,000,000 voting on something (ACA) that they knew was going to fail. Just think how many police that could fund, or firemen or teachers or gone towards cancer research... Way to go GOP!!! The $52M figure came from Scott Pelley

    So what can Romney run on, he distanced himself from Bain, and everything and everyone else. At first he seemed like a moderate now he is all over the place, and all I see right now is a Whiner with alot of money. By the way why don't you release your taxes like your father did.

    The chief of the House Republicans' campaign arm said Thursday it was "fair game" for people to ask for more information about GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney's personal financial records.

    "His personal finances, the way he does things, his record, are fair game," Texas Republican Pete Sessions told CNN

    I've donated to the Obama campaign last round and this round....and I am not a millionaire! Since when did politicians quit awarding jobs for those who financed or work hard to help elect the individual running for office? You can't name a politician who has done this after winning....so what's the point? Romney pay your taxes!! Be a real American! What kind of person sets this type of example for Americans?!

    Romney, until you show us your income tax return for the last 10 years, I refuse to listen.
    My mom aways taught me that "If you got nothing to hide, why hide it?"

    We know that you don't HAVE to show it more than what you already did. We know that. But the question still stands "if you got nothing to hide, why hide it?", in other words, "if you got nothing to hide, why not show it?"

    Unless........ Yeah, thats what I thought.

    Romney just can't keep up with his lies so he has to send in little Bobby to tell more lies and thats all you get with Romney is lies. He was caught red handed by Stepanie Cutter and because he has lied so much it is too late to answer with a straight answer.Romney can't run on his career at Bain and that is why all he does is attack the President with lies.Romney has turned out to be a failure at telling the truth and his tax returns would show even more deception and his seven year run is not going to end well for him but his loss will save the middle class for four more years.
