Romney: Dems would 'distort' tax returns

(CNN) – Mitt Romney continued to stress Tuesday that he has no interest in releasing more tax returns, saying it would provide "hundreds of pages" for opponents to "distort" and turn into attacks against his candidacy.

"In the political environment that exists today, the opposition research of the Obama campaign is looking for anything they can use to distract from the failure of the president to reignite our economy," Romney said in an interview with conservative news outlet National Review Online.

He continued: "And I'm simply not enthusiastic about giving them hundreds or thousands of more pages to pick through, distort, and lie about."

Romney has already released his 2010 tax returns and an estimate for 2011, with a pledge to release his full returns for last year once they're ready. He filed an extension with the Internal Revenue Service, meaning he may not put out his returns until the October filing deadline.

President Barack Obama's re-election team and top Democrats have been pounding Romney over his tax documents, calling on the presumptive GOP presidential nominee to make public more returns in order to answer questions about offshore accounts and overseas investments.

Defending Romney on a conference call earlier Tuesday, former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu said each year of Romney's tax returns is about six inches thick. He added if Romney released a dozen years of documents, as some Democrats have would like, then "that'd be about six feet of returns in which they could find whatever...they want to use as a distraction."

Asked why he has not disposed of his offshore accounts, Romney reiterated Tuesday his portfolio is managed in a blind trust that makes it impossible for him to know where his money is invested.

But the former Massachusetts governor did not hesitate to defend offshore investments, specifically naming accounts in the Cayman Islands, one of the countries in which Romney is reported to hold money.

The Republican candidate said the account is established by a U.S. firm to allow "foreign investors to invest in U.S. enterprises and not be subject to taxes outside of their own jurisdiction."

He added: "So in many instances, the investments in something of that nature are brought back into the United States. The world of finance is not as simple as some would have you believe. Sometimes a foreign entity is formed to allow foreign investors to invest in the United States, which may well be the case with the entities that Democrats are describing as foreign accounts."

– CNN's Rachel Streitfeld and Kevin Bohn contributed to this report.

"The Obamas have hundreds of thousands of dollars in a mutual fund that has large holdings in corporations that outsource jobs."
    -----------------
    Stupid argument. Here's why.

Both the Obamas and the Romneys invest in companies that have outsourced jobs. Here's the difference. The Obamas do not own or manage the companies that outsource the jobs. The Romneys own, manage and operate the companies that perform the outsourcing. That's why Bain has major operation centers in India and Asia. You should visit their web site some time. Read their mission statement. Look at how spread out around the globe they are.

Does Romney think it would only be the Dems looking at his tax returns? Romney has something to hide and most of us Americans know it.................

Of course GE is different. Obama wasn't CEO and Founder of GE. Mitt Romney was the CEO, Founder, President, etc of Bain Capital. So yes that is relevant.

And does he have any special words for the 750,000 legal voters who are at risk of losing their franchise this election because of the state GOP/Teatrolls' voter ID laws?

Yeah, get your fat back side off the couch, stop drinking your government provided beer, stopping eating your government provided chips and get some exercise to lower the expense of the government paid for health care and take a walk to get a picture ID before you vote. How was that?

BTW, where are you getting your imaginery figures? Your magic fairy friend?

Mitt Romney – just told us that he's afraid of what maybe on his tax returns; which is the fact that he took all the loophole that favors the rich & will be ashamed of it when it comes out. How can you change policies that have been in place for years for the rich to take advantage of which is different from us, the poor working folks paying our fair share when you are not. This exactly what Obama is trying to change. Let's see how plays well on 9/6.

If something is solid and strong, it's pretty hard to distort. Is Robmey saying his tax returns may not be that solid?

If Romney puts thoese Tax re-turns out for everyone and the statement he just made about NOT doing it only tells everybody he in fact has cheated on them plain and simple.John Mc Cain put out 2 years of Tax re-turns yes, But there's never been a question about them because John did NOT Own a Financial Investment Firm who buys businesses and destroyes them for profile.Romney is running for POTUS on his work record, John did not.Romney is going to be forced by the public to show them and if he doesn't? That will be his loss for any creditability to be POTUS period.

Funny how so many liberals are so upset that Romney won't divulge his personal tax information but didn't seem to mind when Obama didn't show proof of his citizenship. What hypocrits.

Awwwww, thinly veiled racist stereotypes are cute. The numbers were generated by a quite reputable and credibel study. I'm not here to do your research for you though. I presume you can find Google in between looking at Red State and World Net Daily and Breitbart for what you're supposed to think and how you're supposed to combat the inconvenient facts that prove you're all full of crap? Anyway, your learnin' ain't why I'm here. I'm here to stomp on your complete BS for my own amusement....and you've yet to provide any cogent argument why these laws are necessary in the first place given the proof that widespread voter fraud doesn't exist and that these laws are not only a "solution" in search of a problem, but also a problem in and of themselves. I suppose disenfranchising millions of youth, elderly and minority voters doesn't bother you as long as you get your way though, eh? What's your offer in compromise going to be? Give them all 3/5 of a vote?

Dems distort everything. Example "fair share". That phrase would imply that everyone is in fact paying a share which we know is not the case.

Here's the problem for supporters of Voter ID laws, taken from the VRA of 1965.

"SEC. 2. No voting qualification or prerequisite to voting, or standard, practice, or procedure shall be imposed or applied by any State or

political subdivision to deny or abridge the right of any citizen of the United States to vote on account of race or color."

"SEC. 4. (a) To assure that the right of citizens of the United States to vote is not denied or abridged on account of race or color, no

citizen shall be denied the right to vote in any Federal, State, or local election because of his failure to comply with any test or device

in any State with respect to which the determinations have been made..."

"(c) The phrase "test or device" shall mean any requirement that a person as a prerequisite for voting or registration for voting (1)

demonstrate the ability to read, write, understand, or interpret any matter, (2) demonstrate any educational achievement or his knowledge of

any particular subject, (3) possess good moral character, or (4) prove his qualifications by the voucher of registered voters or members of

    any other class. "

See the problem? Notice how the intent of a voting law is irrelevant. It is only the end result that matters. Voter ID laws require a

"device" to "prove his qualifications by the voucher of registered voters." I rest my case.
