(CNN) – Mitt Romney's national campaign co-chair John Sununu apologized Tuesday afternoon for questioning President Barack Obama patriotism earlier in the day.
Appearing on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer," Sununu said he regrets using those words.

"I'm apologizing for using those words," said Sununu. "I did say those words that were there and, frankly, I made a mistake."
Sununu harshly criticized Obama's leadership in a conference call with reporters and saying he wished "this president would learn how to be an American."
The conference call came on the heals of the Obama campaign's continued attacks on presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney's business record and reluctance to release more tax returns.

I've never heard such disrespect to a sitting president in all my years of living. I'm 50 years old and never have I heard the things said about this president on any other president. Not even Bill Clinton got this treament and they hated him too. They are mad at the fact that a black man is running tbe country. They should be mad at their grown children and the independents for voting for him. They might as well get over it because Obama is going to win a second term. No one, not even them likes Mitt Romney.
Yet another example of the GOP making an outrageous statement about the President and then "walking it back" or "taken out of context", or "that's not what I meant", although the damage has already been inflicted.
The GOP is pulling all of it's dirty tricks out of the bag early. There are still months to go before the election. . . how far does this go???
The behavior is irresponsible, divisive, and intentional. Come on Dems, pick up the gauntlet!!! Time to take each one of these instances and respond to them. The more commonplace the GOP make these comments sound, the more acceptable they become. They are effectively LOWERING THE BAR for their base. Looks good on them but is dangerous for our civility!!
I at least give him a modicum of credit for admitting he made a mistake instead of the the "I'm sorry if my words offended anyone" non-apology that politicians usually give. But I still think he's a tool.
Too little too late you old racist birther bag of wind for an apology
Where are the "birthers" on this one, Sununu is Cuban born and telling us Americans we need to learn how to be Americans. Speak up "birthers", he's talking about you too.
Like the name Sununu sounds American? Oh, that's right... He is Greek and Palestinian and was born in Cuba. (You got papers, John?) And his time in government is riddled with controversy.
The Democrats are going to the depths to find supporters for Romney. Best example is John Sununu – he is a very negative person with an extremely bad take on most everything. Whatever ihe is doing now – get into retirement and out of the public arena.
Stunning how rRepublicans apologize without really apologizing. Kind of like saying- You're stupid, John. I'm sorry that your stupid.
Did he remember that Romney's patriotism came from travelling around France instead of serving his country?
Sununu, Bachmann, Limbaugh et al have to use hateful rhetoric & launch into their diatribes as they have an empty suit they're trying to get elected & they know since Romney has not offered one sound thought or proposal as to why he should be President that's all they can do to deflect attention from their vacuous candidate.
Why do I feel like vomiting every time these Tea/Republicans say something?
Mitt's having a rough time... QUICK!! Let's get some other Republiclown to say something outrageous to take the heat off!
Show us your papers, Mitt!!
Remember when the republicans were going around saying Obama was on an "Apology Tour"?
And as soon as he tears Mitt a new one, they are all demanding he apologizes.
Then when Sununu calls the sitting President of the United States "UnAmerican", he has to apologize the same day.
Republicans don't know their left from their right, or their up from their down...
Cant wait for the landslide in November and the wake up call all these in-denial Right Wing commenters are gonna receive.
Apologiy not excepted, You knew what you were implying, plus you are not a chilld who blorts out inane things. You planted the seed, congratulations.
Is anybody stupid enough not to see the comment and the "apology" are scripted? For Republicans it goes like this...
1. Make a hateful, low-class remark to energize the right-wing "birther trash.
2. Apologize and claim you didn't mean what people heard.
3. Repeat the stupid remark in "nice" terms so the crazies get to hear it again.
4. Consult with Jesus and report that he understands.
He should have never assumed that words like that wouldn't cause a firestorm. I have heard of stupid things to call someone else, but this takes the cake. He owes the appology to more than just the president. He has called those that don't share his ideological view as not Americans.
Funny, to see the Cuban apologizing to the President who was really born in the states about not knowing to be an American.
Don't apologize. You meant it. The difference now is that people are finally realizing what a bunch of hypocrites the bishop has around him. Heck, the whole rethug party. They throw things out there to put thoughts in people's mind then, oops, I didn't mean it. Yeah, right!
Turn in your identification card that proclaims your membership to the human race. Then leave the planet. No one will miss you, except small minded morons like yourself. Please leave.
Nobody cares about his fake "apology". He always was an idiot with no manners.
maybe if the president didnt apologize for our country, maybe if he came out and rewarded those who started businesses on their own instead of making people feel ashamed of success, maybe if he would stop the idea of taxing the job creators that already pay their fair share- maybe then comments like this wont ever be needed
The damage was already done. It is amazing how politicians think they can make these remarks and then apologize and they will be forgiven. Mr. Sununu stepped over the line. There were occasions when people wondered what Mr. Sununu was doing and how he could have done some things in the past. Better to just stick to the script.
Sununu cannot even apologize properly. Mitt Romney should be ashamed to have someone so obese/so offensive as a national co-chair of his campaign. He is not a healthy person, mentally or physically. Romney called upon Sununu strictly to do his "dirty work". Looks like you got what you wanted, Mitt. PS. Do we have to have pictures of Sununu? His rhetoric is offensive enough.
First of all, there is not “the” American – just like people all over the world, they come in all shades and characters, talents, etc. etc. However, if there was the question what direction my children would develop, I would be 10 000 000 times more proud if they become like President Obama who is smart, successful, and compassionate caring for all people than to become a cut-throat capitalist only working for himself and MONEY! A successful life is a lot more than what people in the GOP represent!
