The war over coal is personal

Editor's note: Embed America is a partnership between CNN Radio and CNN iReport. This series tells the story of the 2012 U.S. presidential election through the people most critical to the campaigns: the voters. CNN Radio is traveling across the country to interview iReporters on election issues close to their hearts. These issues were named important by iReporters during phase 1 of the iReport Debate.

(CNN) - Amanda Sedgmer, mother of five and daughter of coal country, believes that in this presidential election, her way of life is at stake.

"If you ask anybody in the coal industry what would happen if Obama is re-elected, they'd say the coal industry is done," said Sedgmer, whose husband, Ryan, is a coal miner and whose family has depended on the industry for at least four generations.

Maybe she should understand how the coal industry operates and what it does to the environment. Clearing off tops of mountains is just outlandish and alters the area. Filling in rivers and streams? Why would you do that? This doesn't even go into the corners cut with worker saftey and the polution effects when coal is burned.

The coal industry has sold the nation some pretty big myths. Fisrt – there is no such thing as "clean coal". If not regulated, the by-products will directly cause serious levels of disease and premature death. Some processes are better than others but it is an industry that produces tremendous levels of pollution and cleaning up the by-products is expensive. Secondly – Global warming is absolutely, positively real and is caused in part by man burning fossil fuels. Coal is a major contributor to global warming. Those who refuse to except the science are either dishonest (protecting income from oil or coal) or delusional (unable to see the overwhelming levels of evidence and too willing to believe Rush Limbaugh). The ads on TV are scaring the coal miners with false information. The world changes and they too need to change as well. We will keep mining coal but Americans will need to pay for the efforts to make it clean and safe.

The coal industry is “done” no matter who is in office or the health of our families and our homes are “done”.
The coal industry doesn't care about the coal miner's family or any other family, but the worst thing is they effectively deceive people into thinking they do.
Coal lobbyists are buying GOP & Dem (Manchin) politicians so these politicians will vote to insure multi-national oil/coal corporation’s profit no matter the cost.
They don’t care how many people are poisoned by their coal because corporations can’t and won’t care about anything but profit – because they are not people.
Sad that there is even a minority of morons in the US believe them.

We currently use a lot of coal for generating electricity..and we have 100 years or 300 years of coal in this country..and the big problem is the exhaust and the CO2...

Well I don't understand why we are not looking at some simple ways to cleanup that exhuast and remove the CO2...
First we can run that exhuast though water..bubble it up from the bottom, through small tubes and let the water collect the mercury and heavey particials...and we do this using fans to suck the exhuast through the water...we can cleanup the water then, remove the mercury and dangerous material...and we can grow algae in the CO2 rich water, bubble that CO2 rich water and CO2 through tall clear plast tubes...and the algae will eat the CO2 and make green oil....Algae grows fast..can harvest in 6 weeks..

You can make anything from algae that you can make from black oil from the ground..motor oil, diesel, gasoline, kerosene, and different jet juels Jp1 to JP 12, plastics, medical products..anything...Just crush the algae and send it to any oil refinery..

Continental Airlines first flight tested 100% Algae jet fuel in 2009..The first passenger Flight Test was Nov 11th 2011...
And consider some Bio-engineered versions of green algae produce 80% diesel fuel by volume...and look at black oil..from a 40 gallon barrel of black oil we get 15 to 17 gallons of gasoline and 8 gallons of diesel and those big semi trucks use a lot of diesel...
