Poll: Presidential race in dead heat

(CNN) – A new poll released Wednesday indicates the presidential race is still locked up between Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama, less than four months before Election Day.

According to a new CBS News/New York Times survey, Romney holds a slight edge over Obama, 47% to 46%. The margin falls well within the sampling error.

However, not everyone has made up their mind. The poll indicates that one in five voters say they could change their decision by November.

Also of note, most voters say Romney’s wealth and history at the private equity firm Bain Capital will make no difference in their vote. Seventy-three percent said his wealth will not be a factor, while 60% said his time at Bain will not make a difference.

The results come after several weeks of intense scrutiny over Romney’s personal financial portfolio, as well as his tenure at the firm. Obama’s campaign and top Democrats have repeatedly called on Romney to release more tax returns than the two years’ worth of tax information he has already made public, pressuring him to answer questions about his offshore accounts.

Romney, however, has vowed not to make public any more tax returns, saying it will simply give Democrats information for them to “distort” and use against him.

"I'm simply not enthusiastic about giving them hundreds or thousands of more pages to pick through, distort, and lie about," he said Tuesday in an interview with National Review Online.

CBS News/New York Times interviewed 1,089 adults over the phone between July 11 and July 16, 942 of whom said they were registered to vote, with a sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points.

Yes his tax returns makes a great difference. Imagine if it was Obama that has so much money and is running against Mitt who does not have that much? This is the thing about us in this country, "double standards". Obama will be smoked like turkey for not releasing more than two years of his tax returns. Let us know how he made his money since he also claims that he created jobs at Bain and facts suggests that at the time he claimed he left Bain, FCC fillings were on his name. I have never seen a retired general in the Army that still gives orders. This is some BS from Mitt. Give us the Returns and end this talk about it.

The debates will drastically change the polls. Obama will be re-elected and will win by a landslide. Can't wait to hear the right-wingers whine for another four years (and then another 8 years after that while Hillary is President).

Mitt Romney's experience at Bain does have a profound affect on my vote. This will give me great confidence as I cast my vote for him. America needs success. We do not have to accept excuses. That is not what we are about. America is about results. It is about all Americans working together for mutual prosperity. It is not about class distinction or dividing into groups. This is what Obama/ Biden 2012 has chosen as their primary reelection strategy. Oddly enough this comes after 4 years of the middle class sucking wind during Obama's failed attempts at economic improvement. After driving national debt to levels that make a sane man gasp. America deserves better. And we have much better to choose now. Romney 2012.

At this stage of the game, why are pollsters telling us that stuff and who cares? I don't. And I also don't care how much they raise or how much they spend. My vote is for Obama and that will not change at all. So give me the voting machine right now.

Listen up America, the government and it's money cronies, with help from the hype media, are playing us for suckers. What we are experiencing are the Polls of lies. These percentage poll numbers are none existent. Use wisdom along with your true gut feeling. We will not be manipulated. I see the man behind those curtain of hypocrisy.

America will ultimately realize two important facts: 1. The last "conservative" left us with the worst recession in 30 years. 2. The Republicans have worked to obstruct all progress – especially regarding the middle class, working Americans.

President Obama is the choice for this old, white, over-educated U.S. Army Veteran.

It is much worse for Obama then this poll shows. ALL he has left is "He's rich and has weird offshore accounts." I don't think that's playing well in the swing states. They're not even polling likely voters yet. It's going to be Mitt in a landslide, as it's STILL "the economy stupid."

Romney's numbers will start going down very soon, once people find out that he doesn't want to put out anymore tax returns ("read my lips, no more tax returns"), that he may not have paid any taxes at all in certain years due to "losing money" due to the economy going down (2008-2009), that he doesn't want to talk about his many overseas foreign accounts, that he was really in the business of making money for Bain and not creating jobs, that he wrote off $77,000 for the prancing horse on his taxes, that he switched one of his foreign accounts to his wife's name the day BEFORE he became Governor, that he has way more in a 401-k account that is really allowed, and on and on. Poor Willard. You're going to wish you never had that prancing horse, nor that darn dog!! LOL.

I expect the Gap to increase between Obama and Romney, resorting to fringe tactics is desperate. Come on people really are not that stupid, the President of the US ? He's going to take your guns, Eat your young, rape your women, he's not one of us ? come on, when you resort to this stuff you're losing. This to me is a sign their own internal poling is probably showing they are losing it quickly. Seriously though this is the USA and your insulting Americas' intelligence with this

Wow those Obama attack ads ( 3/4 of which were proven false by Factcheck.org) really don't appear to be working.
The Obama campaign if full of Bain capital employees. In fact the CEO who actually ran Bain capital during the years in question ( Romney was running the Olympic games full time) is an Obama fundraiser. Obama's fundraisers include several people who are big outsources and Obama himself sent jobs to China, Finland and Denmark for his green energy projects. Why? Because they did the projects for less money.

Until the taxes are released, there is more to distort. As for the polls, it only counts which states either has one since there is no direct election of a president.

This survey was conducted from July 11 thru July 16. Well I wasn't contacted, and I can tell you that I will not support a tax evader who's business model is outsourcing 170 American jobs in Freeport Illinois to China this year!

And, Romney said during the GOP primaries that he wanted to get tough with China. BULL!
