Ann Romney says 'given all you people need to know' on taxes

(CNN) – Ann Romney stood firmly by her husband's commitment to release only two years of tax returns in an interview airing Thursday, saying the information already disclosed was plenty of transparency for the presumptive GOP nominee.

"There are so many things that will be open again for more attack, and you just give more material for more attack, and that's the answer. We've given all you people need to know and understand about our financial situation and about how we live our life," Mrs. Romney said on ABC.

"The election, again, will not be decided on that," she continued.

Romney has released his tax return from 2010, and an estimate for his 2011 information. He filed for an extension on submitting his taxes in April, and has vowed to release the full return when his accountant finalized the documents.

Democrats, and some Republicans, have urged Romney to disclose more of his tax information. Democrats say additional returns will clear up questions about offshore accounts and his rate of income tax, while Republicans say it would be politically advantageous to disclose more information.

In the interview airing Thursday, Ann Romney said the information already released showed Romney was a financially generous - and responsible - man.

"You know, you should really look at where Mitt has led his life, and where he's been financially," Mrs. Romney said. "He's a very generous person. We give 10% of our income to our church every year. Do you think that is the kind of person who is trying to hide things, or do things? No. He is so good about it."

The 2011 tax estimate released in January showed the Romneys gave $2.6 million to their church last year, more than 12% of the roughly $21 million they earned. The Romneys also gave $1.4 million last year in cash and stock to their family foundation, which heavily supports the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In 2010, the other year for which the Romneys released a federal tax return, they gave $1.5 million to the LDS church, 7% of their earnings, plus $900,000 to their family foundation, called the Tyler Foundation.

The Tyler Foundation gave $145,000 to the LDS church in 2010, so the Romneys' church donations average out to 10% over the last two years.

CNN's Dan Gilgoff contributed to this report.

Maybe I can term this like Anne Romney...

"You people need to do some research on Stericycle. Our aborted fetus disposal company that we profited from."

    How did I do?

Ann Romney, who seems to a nice person, just doesn't get how bad a statement like that makes her sound. It appears the whole Romney family may be so far removed from the ordinary American they'll just never get it.

Please forgive her because she doesn't have a clue.
It's just like when Leona Helmsley said "only the little people pay taxes." She wasn't being mean, just being honest.
What is Romeny's economic recovery plan? Tax cuts for the "job creators" has failed, as indicated by the Romenys' tax returns. The rich hoard their wealth. It does not go back into the economy as intended. So what's the plan?

Count me in as one of those "you people" Ann is sticking her (delicate) nose in the air at.

To be clear, Mitt is running for the highest ELECTED office in America ... where a candidate invests (and why) is important for a wannabee President of the United States.

It's rather simple, really. Is Mitt Romney FOR or AGAINST American interests? Not releasing his tax returns is open to debate ... and suggestions.

None of which Mitt seems to want to own up to.

What is Romney trying to hide? Doesn't he want to show us how he managed to accrue a $100M IRA when yearly contributions are supposed to be limited to $30K? Or that he was hiding millions in secret bank accounts in other countries to avoid taxes?

Hypocritical Republicans want to make up stories about Obama's birth certificate but scream when Romney refuses to provide info on his finances.

  12. You didn't build that!

Obama stop whining about Mitt Romney's taxes and worry about the American people taxes that you have raised many times already.

To all those who are still whining about 10 year prior tax returns Romney has made most of his wealth within the last 5 years vs. when he was at Bain so people do your homework.

"You know, you should really look at where Mitt has led his life, and where he's been financially," Mrs. Romney said. "He's a very generous person. We give 10% of our income to our church every year."

We're trying to look at where he's been financially. That's why people want to see his tax returns. It's a bit difficult to follow YOUR advice when he doesn't release them.

And you say he's given 10% of your income to church every year. I see two years of 12% and 7%. Even excusing the 7% as less then what you say he gave, how can you prove any year before that without releasing returns? Those could have been the only two years he donated for all we know.

You called on your opponent in 2002 to release her HUSBAND'S tax returns. President Obama and YOUR FATHER released 12 years of returns. If you want the conversation to move on, release them and be done with it. Because as it is, the press are not going to let this go.

  15. Obama Smoke and Mirror Show -- Snake oil half off

Yes, the REAL problems facing this country are tax returns, NOT 8.2% unemployment that is really more like 14%, NOT record debt, NOT trillion dollar deficits as far as the eye can see, NOT people losing their homes after being unemployed for years, NOT skrocketing food and fuel prices. Nope, Obama and his lackeys think tax returns is their key to success in November. Is it any wonder why the last 4 years has been a disaster?

With all respect to Mrs. Romney – when your husband is vying to be the president of the US the voters have a right and obligation to know all about him and that includes how he became so successful a businessman and whether he paid taxes fairly to the government or tried to cheat. This reflects on his character and trust of the voters in him as a commander-in-chief is based on his truthfulness. Why can't he be more transparent with his tax filings over the years as his father has done unleass he has something to hide that makes the voters not to trust him as president. Please tell your husband to file all tax reports before the elections.

The Romneys are playing with fire. In a very tight race like this one where very few will decide the election!!! Remember "W" won election in Florida by only 500 votes.
OR they know already they won't win. Losing Latino and Black blocs, I can't envisage how they can make it!

Everytime I hear this woman it just irrates me...From saying "its our turn now" to "I depend on my husband to provide for me and my family, as should most women" and "if a woman does work, she should be happy just to be out there in the working world and quit complaining that she’s not making as much as her male counterparts" to how is was a struggle to get by on selling stock investments off so they didn't have to work to know refering to the public as "You people" while wanting our vote..How about this Miss ANNtoinette..I have some cake for you to eat

@ four and the door, this from the same people who didn't have a problem going on and on about the Presidents birth certificate ?
Because there is any question whatsoever that Mitt Romney actually met his tax requirements? Like I said, the IRS is free to audit that. So if Obama has any question he should do his job and demand an audit instead of whining about it in speeches and in ads. Fact is, he is only scratching for political points. Pathetic what the office has become.
Yes, and if the IRS had ever actually audited Romney you would be screaming about illegal intrusions into the life of a private citizen. Your statements only further demonstrate your own partisanship and your willingness to be an apologist for the weakest candidate the GOP has put forth in decades.
