Ann Romney says 'given all you people need to know' on taxes

(CNN) – Ann Romney stood firmly by her husband's commitment to release only two years of tax returns in an interview airing Thursday, saying the information already disclosed was plenty of transparency for the presumptive GOP nominee.

"There are so many things that will be open again for more attack, and you just give more material for more attack, and that's the answer. We've given all you people need to know and understand about our financial situation and about how we live our life," Mrs. Romney said on ABC.

"The election, again, will not be decided on that," she continued.

Romney has released his tax return from 2010, and an estimate for his 2011 information. He filed for an extension on submitting his taxes in April, and has vowed to release the full return when his accountant finalized the documents.

Democrats, and some Republicans, have urged Romney to disclose more of his tax information. Democrats say additional returns will clear up questions about offshore accounts and his rate of income tax, while Republicans say it would be politically advantageous to disclose more information.

In the interview airing Thursday, Ann Romney said the information already released showed Romney was a financially generous - and responsible - man.

"You know, you should really look at where Mitt has led his life, and where he's been financially," Mrs. Romney said. "He's a very generous person. We give 10% of our income to our church every year. Do you think that is the kind of person who is trying to hide things, or do things? No. He is so good about it."

The 2011 tax estimate released in January showed the Romneys gave $2.6 million to their church last year, more than 12% of the roughly $21 million they earned. The Romneys also gave $1.4 million last year in cash and stock to their family foundation, which heavily supports the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In 2010, the other year for which the Romneys released a federal tax return, they gave $1.5 million to the LDS church, 7% of their earnings, plus $900,000 to their family foundation, called the Tyler Foundation.

The Tyler Foundation gave $145,000 to the LDS church in 2010, so the Romneys' church donations average out to 10% over the last two years.

CNN's Dan Gilgoff contributed to this report.

"You people"! What the hell? The Romneys are exhibiting such arrogance, smugness, condescending, and intolerant behavior of people different from them. This proves that they don't give a damn about "you people" of the lower economic class!

Let me get this straight. Romney is running on his business and financial prowess but when we start asking questions about said business and finances he becomes secretive and snobby.

Also, please look at the numbers, like honestly. How can you actually run around ignorantly declaring Obama has destroyed the economy when we have had months straight of job creation, wall street is trading higher than ever. We are slowly climbing out of this GOP created mess. Even republicans admit we are in a recovery which they staunchly denied before.

I think those who are rich do not know how the language is used. Ann Romney saying "you people" reminds me during the leaking of the oil, the BP boss saying "I do care for small people"!

Hear that, America. That's that "you all" get. Never mind the returns Mitt was expected to have released in 2008. If he gets elected "you all" are not getting annual tax returns every year that he would be in the White House.

Do we really want to elect an arrogant plutocrat as POTUS? Do we really want to elect someone who will stack the deck further in his own favor, while he thumbs his nose in our faces saying none of yoru business?

So they are admitting that the hidden tax returns contain information that is damaging to his candidacy and simply refusing to disclose. Wow.

The tax rate that Romney has been paying is relevant because he's proposing more tax cuts for the wealthiest among us.
Sending money off shore is relevant because when the money goes off shore, our jobs follow.
Giving money to the LDS church doesn't negate the issues of tax rate or money off shore.
The 'you people' comment speaks volumes about the arrogant attitude from the Romney's about 'common folk'.
The GOP complained endlessly about the high number of pages in the Affordable Care Act and yet the Romney camp now brags about releasing 500 pages of tax returns - for 2010 alone.

Romneys: Disclose your tax returns for the past ten years. We the People will decide if we like what we see or not.

At this point they just dont want to be seen as caving. People will scream for awhile and then forget, like they forget everything.

Romney and Obama are both so terrible. We have a sitting president who is openly antagonistic towards capitialism and economic freedom. An AMERICAN president saying that not only does capitalism not work, but that it never worked... The sheer lunacy of that is near incomprehensible.

    And then theres Romney... /vomit

Government cannot create real jobs. Remember, the Soviet Union had 0% unemployment. They used to brag about that, but they had to stand in line for 5 hours to get food. Government make work is work for its own sake, not for what it produces, which is why we want jobs; for their productive value.

Government has no money. Only people have money, you and I have money. The government only gets it by first putting its hand into our pocket. Weve created a monster middle man who has sway over our own lives and how we spend the money we worked for.

Am I the only one concerned THOSE PEOPLE (repubs) are going to try to buy this election? I bet they demand recounts again when they don't win the swing states.

Well, then, that settles it. "You people" don't need or deserve to know, so that's it.Yeah, she doesn't sound like an arrogant elitist at all. I wonder if anyone has yet told her that she's not helping?

What are the tax returns going to say that we don't already suspect? Romney made a ton of money off shoring jobs? He used every tax loophole possible to off shore money and may zero taxes? That he tithed less than 10% to his church (I wonder if that is the real issue)? The more they protest, the more people wonder what he is really hiding.

I think it was CNN this morning that said that most Americans don't care if Romney turns in more tax returns, it made no difference in the polls or even that Romney is rich. Personally, I care more that Obama is anti-small business and yes I listened to Obama's speech (not on Fox) on how I should be grateful to the government for my business because I have it thanks to our government, I should send my bills and payroll to the government to pay.

Giving 10% to the morman church isn't charity, it is dues. Tithe of 10% is required for membership. They say it is voluntary to allow it to be tax deductible, but anyone who has ever been to the church know that not only is it not voluntary, it is a bare minimum. Unless giving dues that you are required to give is somehow considered charity when the place requiring just so happens to be a religious organization, I don't understand how we can think of paying required dues as being "generous". Religious maybe, but not generous.

As far as "all you people"...this man is not giving us any plan, any information about his background at Bain and now hiding information about how he made his money, and now "we people" are supposed to just trust him and not ask for more? "We People" are the people who are supposed to be in charge of the government, not just some random peons for the rich Romneys to rule over. If we aren't important enough to him to allow us to ask questions relevant to his main argument (that he knows how to make money and that he has a tax plan (which he still hasn't revealed)), then maybe "we people" just should find a person who is willing to give us answers to the questions we need to know before we are willing to trust that person to act in our name.

Poorly phrased, otherwise completely insignificant. Kinda like the distraction campaign that Obama is running. The amazing thing, he keeps going despite overwhelming factual support that none of his allegations are true. Unfortunate to see so many people have gone for the bait on this one. You would think that people figured out that the Obama campaign, just like last time, is saying one thing and doing another.
