Boehner calls Bachmann accusations 'pretty dangerous'

(CNN) – Republican House Speaker John Boehner called dangerous Thursday a request from members of his own party in Congress to investigate Muslim infiltration in the U.S. government.

Admitting he had not read a letter requesting the investigation, Boehner said "I think accusations like this being thrown around are pretty dangerous."

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, along with four other Republican members of Congress, formally requested in June that various federal agencies investigate whether the American government has been infiltrated by Muslim extremists.

– Read Bachmann's letter

Among the issues they raise is a claim that long-time aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Huma Abedin, has three family members connected to the Muslim Brotherhood, and is at risk of being influenced by her family members. The members of Congress want to know how she holds a high level security clearance.

On Thursday, Boehner said he did not know Abedin, but that "everything I do know of her she has a sterling character."

Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain made a speech on the Senate floor Wednesday criticizing the call for an investigation and defending Abedin.

"These allegations about Huma, and the report from which they are drawn, are nothing less than an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable woman, a dedicated American, and a loyal public servant," McCain said.

"When anyone, not least a member of Congress, launches specious and degrading attacks against fellow Americans on the basis of nothing more than fear of who they are and ignorance of what they stand for, it defames the spirit of our nation, and we all grow poorer because of it," he added.

State Department spokesman Phillipe Reines called the accusations "nothing but vicious and disgusting lies," in a statement to CNN.

Bachmann, who refused to answer questions from CNN about the letter on Wednesday, said in a statement that her and her colleagues' request was being "distorted."

"I encourage everyone, including media outlets, to read them in their entirety," Bachmann wrote. "The intention of the letters was to outline the serious national security concerns I had and ask for answers to questions regarding the Muslim Brotherhood and other radical group's access to top Obama administration officials."

CNN's Kate Bolduan contributed to this report.

It is unfortunate that people fear those that are different than they are. We are a diverse nation and with that comes immigrant families can be extensive and may have ties with organizations that to us appear suspicious. If we give into these fears we run the risk of being paranoid of anyone and anything. Anybody working in government service should have been vetted to a certain degree depending on their access to information or authority. But it does all of us a disservice when a high ranking member of the federal legislature makes unfounded accusations condemming an individual or group. It takes away from our freedom and liberty.

Bachmann is becoming more idiotic than Palin. How anyone can give this lunatic one ounce of credibility is what we should all be asking ourselves.

The fact that people like Bachmann and her ilk make it into Congress is disgrace to the US. Who are the nutcases in MN that vote for her. where is the rational republican local members who vet their candidates. She would not pass even the lowest of entry barriers. She looks crazy and it goes downhill from there.

Boehner likes [people such as her in Congress it even makes him look rational.

Surprised she didn't hold up a blank sheet of paper and claim that she had in her hand a list of 52 known Muslim radicals working for the government

Once again Bachman and Gohmert have shown they should be certified insane. Gohmert and his terror babies conspiracy, and Bachman who now believes the highest levels of government is full of Muslims, believes the HPV vacine causes mental retardation and that we have an embassy in Iran. When will this stop? How do these nutbars get elected? I think Huma Abedin should sue them for defamation of character. If I was a lawyer I'd gladly take on the case pro bono.

There's a reason she won't be speaking at the Republican convention. Most of her fellow Republicans cringe at the meer thought of the damage she could to to their election hopes if she were to speak.

    GOP Leadership Meeting notes:
    Groups to demonize
    1. Blacks – continue what we've been doing since 2008
    2. Women – Deny equal pay, push for ultrasounds, especially transvaginal
    3. Hispanics – Show me your papers, hombre
    4. Military – find a vet who lost limbs and say she hasn't done much with herself
    5. Muslims – Everything since 9/11, but let's see if we can come up with something......I dunno......fresh.....

Accusations likes those coming from Michele Bachmann are ridiculous and baseless. I am embarrassed to share a party, let alone a country, with this woman and all those who peddle fear, gossip, and rumors.

Well, at least she did actually name someone. I'm still waiting on Allen West to name some of the 78-81 members of congress that are communists. Or Sherrif Joe's proof. Or Trumps evidence....

Wait....i'm starting to notice an "guilty even if proven innocent" theme going on here. Clearly, you don't even need to provide the Beck type of "evidence" anymore. Just say it and it should be so.

Bachman is just like Mcarthy except I don't believe he had a gay husband like she does.......did he? He was pretty tight with J Edgar so maybe he did.
She needs to be investigated to determine if she's a spy for Switzerland since she's a Swiss citizen now. Of course getting that dual Swiss citizenship is just so she can get close to Romney's Bain capitlal money when they and the rest of the extreme right wing destroy this country and run for it.

Also Mr. Boehner. For your information Ann Romney just did even more and irreversible damage to your party with her
incredibly stupid remark on :You people, etc." The fact that she makes Donald Trump look classy is a real problem for
the GOP. You ought to do something!

Have you people not been paying attention to what this woman says? This is not shocking at all, what is shocking is people voted for her.

Even more shocking (but still glad to see), some members of GOP call the fear mongering out for once.

and we (tax payers) paid her in her government position? What fools did that?!?!!? Unbelievable that Minnesota even has her represent them. Says a lot about the up north state AND the TEA PARTY she is represents.... WOW, she's nothing more than the US version of the Muslim Brothers

Oh wait, I got it, she and her not so bright friends in Congress wrote the letter right after the aliens kidnapped them (again) and now they don't remember it!

  23. ghostriter

Tea folks, this is your girl. She is representative of the biggest tea folk problem. Or at least what every other problem comes down to. Representation.

You see, tea folks actually have great base ideals. Smaller govt, etc. The problem as I have been saying since 2010 is that the folks you choose to elect and get behind only speak of those goals. In reality, what we have in tea politicians are folks just looking to push their political agenda, folks looking to push a social agenda and folks that are just plain looney tunes. She fits in the latter two.

If the MB is so bad, why are they pushing for democracy in Egypt and thumbing their noses at the hardline military commanders? Why is the MB removing some of its members from committees when they see they have more representation than others? Bachmann, like Romney, is stuck far, far in the past.
