Poll shows Americans want to see Romney's tax returns

(CNN) – A majority of Americans say presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney should release income tax information beyond the two years he's already disclosed.

The USA Today/Gallup survey showed 54% of those surveyed felt Romney should release tax returns from additional years, compared to 37% who said Romney should not release more returns.

Romney has released his tax return from 2010, and an estimate for his 2011 information. He filed for an extension on submitting his taxes in April, and has vowed to release the full return when the documents are finalized and filed.

Democrats, and some Republicans, have urged Romney to disclose more of his tax information. Democrats say additional returns will clear up questions about offshore accounts and his rate of income tax, while Republicans say it would be politically advantageous to disclose more information. President Barack Obama's campaign immediately blasted out the poll Thursday as an indication their campaign push is working.

In Thursday's poll, 30% of self-identified Republicans said Romney should release more of his returns, compared to 75% of Democrats and 53% of Independents who said the same.

The survey also showed respondents were divided on whether or not the tax return information was relevant to the campaign. Forty-seven percent said having more tax return information from Romney would be "largely irrelevant" to making a decision at the voting booth, compared to 44% who said the returns would provide ""legitimate information that helps voters make better decisions."

The Gallup/USA Today poll was taken by telephone on Wednesday from 539 adults. The sampling error was plus or minus 5 percentage points.

What everyone is failing to look at is that Mitt is not a stupid person, out of touch, elitist, moron, yes. But not stupid. If he wanted to bring ALOT of attention to his financial success, when he did nothing wrong, all he has to do is hide it until the public forces him to show it. And once he is forced to show it, And its all roses, it will make everyone who doubted him feel stupid. This is a ploy, there is probably nothing in his back taxes that will harm him, he just wants alot of scrutuiny on it when he finally lets it go, then he can smile and say "I told you so". I still think we should have that info, just be prepared when it comes out.

Good point, I agree. And why did Obama not renew his Law license, seems every Obama groupie brags of what a passion and genius Obama is of the law. Imagine to come so far in your studies just to let it go. Weird?

Wrong. The only people who want to see the President's College transcripts (certainly not something commonly provided by any politicians for any reason) are the "birthers" and other members of the hate club that's destroyed the integrity of the Republican Party. What you really want is proof the President is an ignorant, bigoted white person... You know... like the Tea Party.

The issue with Romney's the tax returns from an earlier period isn't so much about how much tax he paid, it's evidence of his involvment with Bain when he says he had nothing to do with it. It's also evidence of all the other company/job killing/job exporting activities he's been involved with and claims he had no knowledge. We "you people" need to see enough years to find out just what his involvement really was.
Question: can a conciencious objector (Mormon) be president and send our military to war like the ones he's already said he'd start with Iran and Russia? Of course no Mormons will be going so yeah, it works for him and heck they're just "you people" anyway so who cares, Mitt doesn't.

Honor your father, Mitt, show your taxes. This isn't going away, and it will only get worse the more you and your wife try to hide it.

    Dear Romney Supporters,

If you follow politics then you should be fully aware of the issue with Mitt not disclosing tax returns from the last 10-12 years. It is not so much that he has something to hide like tax evasion. The concern should be whether or not Mitt is doing his fair share. Many people posting comments will likely find out that Mitt managed to pay little to no taxes on his income over the last 12 years. If that is the case then we all should be mad. Imagine if you and your family didnt have to pay income taxes, that's guaranteed to account for more money in your pocket. The rules Romney plays by are not the same rules that you play by. Don't be blind to the fact that Mitt says he wants tax reform. Any tax reform he comes up with will likely favor the rich with tax exemptions and write-offs, etc. I am a proud Democrat. I am a proud American. I think its sickening that the president is called every name in the book and thats ok. This is our commander in chief folks. Where is the respect. Also, our economy was in a downward spiral so bad it was considered to be just as bad as the "great depression" when Barack stepped into office. Jobs are no longer being lost but created. More Americans now have access to preventative health care. Women can now be paid fairly as a man working the same position. For those people out there that bash Democrats for helping the poor and then declaring class warfare..shame on you. Do unto others as you would have others do unto you*

Most Americans hear the call for Obama's college transcripts and shake their heads, especially independents.

If you were nominated for a Cabinet post, and submitted only two years worth of tax returns, you would be dismissed without a public hearing. Don't forget, Romney has only submitted one year plus an estimate of an amount due. In fact, it appears that not every form that should have been in the 2010 return may have been released. Besides, we all know that Romney has no intention of filing a 2011 return. He will pay the estimated amount, release a record of that, and revise it on his 2012 return.

While there is probably nothing illegal in Romney's tax returns, there is likely ample evidence demonstrating how highly subsidized he is by federal tax laws. I thought he was against government handouts- must only be against handouts to the sick and needy.

Why didn't he provide copies of his latest colonoscopy? Is a President required to maintain the status of a law license? Could if be he no longer considered practicing law again? He was a black man who went to Harvard! Get over it!

I understand that it can be done like this. Start a company where you are sole owner and share holder. Create an IRA that purchases those stock shares for a penny. Over time the shares increase twofold, then tenfold and more, by putting money into the company. Before you know it those 100,000 shares that you purchased for a penny each are now worth ten dollars each, or $100 million dollars. Easy as pie
    --tony
You can't put non-publicly traded shares into an IRA, precisely because you can grossly undervalue them at at deposit time
    ----
Exactly. Which brings me back to the question on how to achive a 100M IRA. I'll just stick with the Swiss bank account, Cayman Island accounts and gifting to my children's trust accounts for now. On another topic, I think the capital gains rate should be indexed to the size of the national debt. That would give the 1% a good incentive to get the debt paid off. 0 debt, 0% cap gains.

Romney should only release if Obama releases his college transcripts. As a taxpayer, I want to know how my president performed in economics class – or of he even took such a class. I don't care to know as much how much Romney (or Obama for that matter) made 3, 4, 5 yrs ago or where thye invested their personal money. None of my business. Most importantly, I want to know about the state of our economy, what has been done and what needs to be done. CNN and media should focus on economy like a laser beam and give less focus on the distractions the Obama campaign wants us to focus on.

I want to see the tax returns of all members of Congress who refuse to divulge them especially Pelosi and Reid. I also, want to see those of Obama's Cabinet members and other key White House staff. Many of these folks are also millionaires.....the hypocrisy of it all.

Come on Liberals. You're asking for people to move on after the Supreme Court upheld Obamacare. Romney has already given you what the law requires on taxes. Why would you want more than what the law requires? Just want more proof that Romney is more successful than you? You're swatting at flies. Move on.

If Mitt Romney has nothing to hide ,than It won't hurt anything. But I think he don't want to show any more of his tax return because he hiding something he doesn't want the American People to know About.
