Romney, supporters buy $15.6 million in ads

Washington (CNN) – The major Republican super PAC American Crossroads will hit the airwaves Friday with a new ad that aims to defend Mitt Romney and his record against the onslaught of attacks by the Obama re-election team. This comes as Romney's campaign has bought its largest amount of ad time this general election season.

Crossroads said it is buying $9.3 million of broadcast television and internet advertising for their commercial. Romney's campaign bought approximately $6.3 million for ad time, according to a Democratic source tracking ad buys.

In the ad from Crossroads entitled "Smoke," the super PAC tried to deflect some of the criticisms previous Obama ads have leveled about whether Romney was part of outsourcing jobs while head of the private equity firm Bain Capital.

"What happened to Barack Obama? The press and even Democrats say his attacks on Mitt Romney are misleading, unfair and untrue, blowing smoke, too far, no evidence," states the spot.

It then attacks the president's economic record. "So why is Obama attacking? He has added $4 billion in new debt every single day. Unemployment stuck above 8% every single day. Family incomes falling. Barack Obama can't run on that record."

The Obama campaign stood behind its ads saying the contentions are based on press reports.

The group said it is buying $9.3 million worth of time on broadcast television and the internet for the commercial, which will air in the battleground states of Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia.

Obama's campaign bought almost $25 million worth of broadcast and cable time for the month of July in nine battleground states, and spots attacking Romney both on his business record, his financial holdings and his refusal to release more tax returns have made up the majority of that buy.

While Romney has been bombarded by the attack ads, up until now the presumptive Republican nominee's campaign nor any of the super PACs backing his candidacy have bought television time to defend him against the Obama team's media barrage.

Romney's campaign has tried to go on the offensive releasing four different ads in the last week all attacking Obama for the campaign it is waging.

Romney's campaign bought approximately $6.3 million for commercial time that began Tuesday and will run for a week, according to the Democratic source.

The buy breaks down this way:
Colorado: $600,000
Florida: $1.3 million
Iowa: $500,000
Nevada: $500,000
New Hampshire: just under $100,000
North Carolina: $700,000
Ohio: $1.4 million
Iowa: $500,000
Virginia: $1.2 million

The bottom line is Romney = Bush. Nobody wants to go back to Bush, except those who benefited from his cronyism.

  4. BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA has a FAILURE PROBLEM

Great ads... Don't let Obama get away with these smear ads and allow him to distract from his four year record of abysmal failure. This election IS a referendum on Obama's job performance, or more accurately LACK of performance. Obama ha sbeen the biggest disaster in the Whitehouse since Jimmy Carter. At least Jimmy Carter didn't pit one segment of the American people against another. Far left Obama, Reid and Pelosi have doomed the Democrat Party. 2010 was nothing compared to what awaits the Democrats this November.

  8. CRAIG

Most Americans know what they'd be getting with a Romney Presidency and that's nothing. Nothing, because he hasn't offered any suggestions except that he believes he's qualified because he "can read a balance sheet." Really now, that sounds like something Sarah Palin would say. No, he's just an empty suit who the corporate puppeteers are drooling to get their hands on.

"Why is Obama attacking? Why isn't he rolling over like a good doggie like we wanted him to? He's picking on us! The legit media and those looking into the facts know he's right, but he's picking on us with the truth and it hurts, mommy!!"

Yeah, that's really going to help.

I saw a Romney ad on MSNBC, that was a real waste. I do understand, everyone wants to make some money. I just doubt very many Romney supporters watch MSNBC, I think they watch Fox.

Ah, yes. More money spent for the good of "social welfare" agendas. At least, that's what Rove says his
super PAC is. A "social welfare" organization. Another lesson in how to beat the system.

Romney wastes lots of time lambasting the President, but he does NOT put forward any ulturnative, no program, and no ideas for how to "correct" these imperfections. What is Romney's plan – HE HAS NONE! It is just "OBAMA BAD, ME GOOD". WHERE IS HIS PLAN?

Iraq war ended, still trillion dollar deficits. Afghanistan winding down, still trillion dollar deficits. Obama signed and passed the Obama tax cuts, HE OWNS THEM NOW. This is the truth and yes it hurts Obama. I suggest you educate yourself.

If romney really cared for needy Americans, he would donate the money to the poor and middle class that are jobless rather than waste millions in boring and repetitive false ads.

This is solely from watching the news on ABC, NBC, and CBS. Watching the two candidates on the news, Obama is attacking Romney on everything but his political record and today's issues. His attacks are directly on the person. This is switch from 4 years ago where he deplored such things. Romney is responding by addressing the issues that we are facing the economy, unemployement, jobs, inflation, etc...

Towards Craig, what has Obama given us? Higher unemployment, greater defecit, unstable economy, foreclosures, a poor national and foreign policies.

Now I hear the crying that the Republicans have stopped everything in the House and Senate. Well for the first two years of the Obama administration the majority in the House and Senate were Democrats. Today, the it is only the Senate. So this points out to the inabilty of the Democratic party to work amongst themselves for Obama's first two years of office.

I am an independant voter from North Carolina, 56 years old, and currently undecided about the presidential election. The more ads I see the more my disappointment grows in the current political process. The choice is seeming abysmal. Obama's negative attack using Romney singing our traditional heartfelt american song is most dispicable and is just one more account of Obama's lack of pride and belief in America. I am brought to tears about this and getting frightened about what is happening. Please do something to get this ad off the air! Thank You. D. Russo
