Romney, supporters buy $15.6 million in ads

Washington (CNN) – The major Republican super PAC American Crossroads will hit the airwaves Friday with a new ad that aims to defend Mitt Romney and his record against the onslaught of attacks by the Obama re-election team. This comes as Romney's campaign has bought its largest amount of ad time this general election season.

Crossroads said it is buying $9.3 million of broadcast television and internet advertising for their commercial. Romney's campaign bought approximately $6.3 million for ad time, according to a Democratic source tracking ad buys.

In the ad from Crossroads entitled "Smoke," the super PAC tried to deflect some of the criticisms previous Obama ads have leveled about whether Romney was part of outsourcing jobs while head of the private equity firm Bain Capital.

"What happened to Barack Obama? The press and even Democrats say his attacks on Mitt Romney are misleading, unfair and untrue, blowing smoke, too far, no evidence," states the spot.

It then attacks the president's economic record. "So why is Obama attacking? He has added $4 billion in new debt every single day. Unemployment stuck above 8% every single day. Family incomes falling. Barack Obama can't run on that record."

The Obama campaign stood behind its ads saying the contentions are based on press reports.

The group said it is buying $9.3 million worth of time on broadcast television and the internet for the commercial, which will air in the battleground states of Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia.

Obama's campaign bought almost $25 million worth of broadcast and cable time for the month of July in nine battleground states, and spots attacking Romney both on his business record, his financial holdings and his refusal to release more tax returns have made up the majority of that buy.

While Romney has been bombarded by the attack ads, up until now the presumptive Republican nominee's campaign nor any of the super PACs backing his candidacy have bought television time to defend him against the Obama team's media barrage.

Romney's campaign has tried to go on the offensive releasing four different ads in the last week all attacking Obama for the campaign it is waging.

Romney's campaign bought approximately $6.3 million for commercial time that began Tuesday and will run for a week, according to the Democratic source.

The buy breaks down this way:
Colorado: $600,000
Florida: $1.3 million
Iowa: $500,000
Nevada: $500,000
New Hampshire: just under $100,000
North Carolina: $700,000
Ohio: $1.4 million
Iowa: $500,000
Virginia: $1.2 million

Ann Romney: We’ve given all you people need to know and understand about our financial situation and how we live our life.

    Corporate elitism at its finest.

Are you Mittheads enjoying the Olympics/Mattel story that surfaced today? What a man.

Romney's ads are a bunch of lies. But then the repubs know that they can brainwash the illiterates. This is just another way to sabotage the president as the GOP in congress are doing. Brainwashing! But polls lie and I believe that the debates will wash Mitt out. He has nothing to offer. No job creation Idea. I believe the president will squash Mitt in the debates!

@v_mag "Romney = Bush" .. Laughable because here you go again blaming Bush! Can't find anything to blame on Obama's economic mishaps. Why won't Democrats run on their policies and the results, instead, of personal attacks? I guess racism, war on women, class warfare, etc. are not working for independents. And so Democrats with the guidance of Obama is using the dirtiest tactics of personal attacks. DO NOT DO UNTO OTHERS WHAT YOU DON'T WANT TO DO UNTO YOURSELVES, Democrats! Wise up! and learn to run on your policies and the bad results for the last 4 years.. Since Obama became president, I don't get any salary increase nor profit sharing, paying more on groceries, paying more on gasoline, and NO BRIGHT HOPE FOR A BETTER FUTURE BECAUSE OBAMA HATES SUCCESS!

The rich will keep on getting richer and the poor will keep on getting poorer. That's been the GOP philosophy for the last 30 years. And they have been successful at it. I love the irony that the poorest states in the union always vote against their best interest. If you have a bridge to sell go to one of those states.

Voters today woke up to higher unemployment numbers, home sales fell in June, retail sales are down and frankly people are tired of it and most people have exhausted their savings, small businesses are borrowing from credit cards, business associates, etc.... to make payroll, pay bills. This is the reality voters are facing and Obama is just not making it better and a speech doesn't pay the bills nor do dreams and Obama is full of dreams but he is not practical, grounded.

@indie52 "The rich will keep on getting richer and the poor will keep on getting poorer" - Here's my answer: Came to this country 16 years ago as legal immigrant with nothing but my bachelor degree and ambition. Worked from the bottom why taking masters degree. Now after 16 years, family is doing well. So, who is to blame if I had chose to be lazy and not sacrifice? Myself! However, I chose to work hard and go to school to get degrees - no parties, no luxury..pure schooling and hard work. As Bill Gates said Don't blame yourself for being born poor, but blame yourself if you die poor..

I am increasingly disappointed by the negative ads I have seen . I am from North Carolina, 56 year old independant voter and currently undecided about the presidential election. President Obama's ad of Romney singing a heartfelt traditional song about America combined with Obama's self aggrandizing strong implications and innuendo about another person is despicable. The use of our song brings me to tears and outrage towards Obama. His approval of the use of this song for his own purpose confirms, once again, Obama's lack of belief and pride in America. . I am frightened by what is happening. Please help to get this ad off the air.

@padriad first two years, first two years....that's the best you can do???? Still living in the past....how about saving the country from financial doom??? Our health care act???? Saving General Motors???? I'm sure none of which you agree with....point is things were getting done until obstruction became the word!!! Now look at our country...dead in the water and the haters are smelling blood in the water. That ploy is very transparent....even if your candidate is not!!!!

Millions of dollars spent on both sides for "attack ads", but not one of those contributors can crack open a job?

lesson repubs, you have no more states to steel from, like what your repubs govenors are doing. are you going to steel from china, when you cut every thing around that help the middle class and poor. i bet if you kill all the middle class wages in america, you still cannot get chinese jobs nor keep american jobs here. so go ahead and kill our dwindling demand power and face china, and india down, when those 2 countries have 3 billion people, and in full force to low american businesses from our country. just like what the repubs govenors have been doing to individual states.

So Romney spent 15.6 million, when are you going to talk about the 100 million the President spent on ads (found on Daily Kos)?

Obama is the one that started the attack ads and even the Washington Post said they were lies. King and Gergen have also illustrated that the Bain issue is a non-issue. Obama is the outsourcer – look up what he has done with your tax dollars and the stimulus. Follow the money and you'll be surprized!

The President is attacking because he has been under attack by the Romney campaign since last fall. The Romney wants to transform the attacks into an attack on business. The attacks are aimed at Romney's credibility and highlights his lack of transparency in his campaign.

Why is Romney striking back so hard? Because Pres. Obama has hit an exposed nerve, that's why.

    -------------------------------------------------
I can understand. It borught me and other people that I know to tears to see President Obama so awfully, blatantly, and continuously disrespected in front of our country and the entire world by so-called patriots claiming , among other diespicable things, that our duly-elected President should produce his birth certificate because he wasn't an American.
Can you imagine how disrespectful of the office of the President this despicable claim is? Can you imagine what people around the world must think of us Americans who would stoop to treating our President like this over and over and over again?
Then again Dawn, maybe you can't imagine.

Obama needs to also "go positive" and show what he has accomplished. The GOP is winning the "jobs" issue. Does anyone really believe that Romney's economic policies (Bush on steroids) will fix the economy? Also the elitism of telling the American public "you know enough" abiout how we used the tax code for our benefit while attacking big government. There should be a bumper sticker, "Do you trust a tax dodger"

Romney inside out . . . The true bane of his existence. The rude awakening of true Plutocracy in America. The hypocrisy of Greed and power will always cancel out true patriotism and leadership that is initially designed to serve the people. Question, how can someone who claim to love America, pillaged and plunder the American tax system by finding hidden loop holes, hiding money in offshore accounts, avoid serving in one of the most tragic wars in American history (vietnam), who really never did anything for anyone, it he couldn't benefit the most, have the Audacity to run for president of these United States? Romney's past actions or inactions, should be the bane of his self serving existence. Period.

No, Romney started the attacks last fall with the grossly misleading ad of Obama quoting McCain in 2008. The Romney campaign knew the ads were misleading and claimed that was the point. The Washington Post cits Mitt Romney's claim that he left Bain as their evidence.

Remember, the Obama campaign is reporting what is being reported in the media. Mitt Romney's claim that he left Bain in 1999 runs counter to his claims in 2002 before the MA elections board as tried to prove his MA residency so that he could run for governer.
