Bloomberg demands gun action from Obama and Romney

(CNN) – New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an outspoken advocate of stricter gun-control laws, said in a radio interview Friday the two candidates for president needed to take a firmer line in addressing gun violence.

Bloomberg's comments came as police and the FBI were investigating a deadly shooting in Colorado that left at least 12 people dead.

"Soothing words are nice, but maybe it's time that the two people who want to be president of the United States stand up and tell us what they are going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country," Bloomberg said on WOR Radio's "The John Gambling Show."

Bloomberg continued, saying Friday's tragedy should spark greater focus on how guns reach killers.

"I mean, there are so many murders with guns every day, it's just got to stop," Bloomberg said. "And instead of the two people – President Obama and Governor Romney – talking in broad things about they want to make the world a better place, okay, tell us how."

"In the end, it is really the leadership at a national level, which is whoever is going to be president of the United States starting next January 1st – what are they going to do about guns?" Bloomberg asked.

Presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney met with Bloomberg in May, but an aide to the mayor said Bloomberg remained undecided about making an endorsement in the presidential race. Bloomberg won his last election as a political independent, but was previously a Democrat, then a Republican.

In his interview Friday, Bloomberg said guns getting into hands of criminals wasn't solely a problem in cities like New York.

"This is killing people every day, and it's growing and it's not just an inner-city, east coast, west coast, big city phenomenon. Aurora is not a big city," Bloomberg said, referring to the suburb of Denver where Friday's shooting took place.

can you imagine 20 people or more pulling out their handguns in a crowded, dark theater and shooting at the murderer? don't forget the tear gas in their eyes. you might have had 50 people killed instead of 12. here's the new outerwear in America, 2012: bullet-proof vest, gas mask, night vision goggles, .45 on your hip. yup, we'll be plenty safe then.

I do wish We can return to the utopian world the anti-gunners seems to think this Country would be with out private gun owner ship. We could all go to sleep at night with doors unlocked, confidant in the thought that they would wake every day alive and well. Unfortunately this kind of world don't exist anymore and there is not a Cop standing in front of every home or business to respond in seconds if needed. I still favor the 2nd amendment right for legaly private gun owner ship. Criminals and insane People will always be there wiith the ability to kill, mame, rob, and destroy even without guns.

Just waiting to see what the NRA does about this..... my guess it will be a long while.
People love their guns. I don't think this tragedy will move any laws to more control.

How many times do we hear this call for something Real to get done on Gun Control so these morons don’t get access to these guns in the first place!
This mass murder will keep happening because the NRA is in control and not the Congress!

You will not see this happening in Canada.

According to some people making murder illegal isn't good enough if you made guns illegal that would work. Give me a break. There is no where on earth where you can't get the means to do bad things if you are intent. At least allow those people who are willing to fight back the ability to do so. Doesn't mean you have to but don't take others ability away.

Mayor Bloomerg, tell your Judges to stop punishing Criminals for super sizing their French Fries and start handing down stricter punishment for gun crimes and enforcing the gun laws on our books now you idiot. More laws are not going to help if not enforced.

20 trained gun owners? You would more likely have had one dead insane shooter with 50-100 gunshot wounds and relatively few, if any, other casualities. But even more to the point, do you think this insane fool would have even attempted it had he thought there would be 20 armed citizens there to stop him? Probably not.

I wonder how Bloomberg can feel comfortable preching to people how to eat and gun control, while sitting on a perch of body guards and private chefs. Hmmm...curious.

Just like a damned politician to jump on a tragedy to spew his agenda, there are plenty of ways to kill people without using guns, some much easier, suppose he had used a gasoline bomb , would we need to control gasoline! This was the work of a crazed lunatic controlling guns will not even reduce this type of insanity. Shut the hell up Bloomberg, follow your presidents example.

Nice thought but the gun lobby is too powerful. There are too many people out there full of fear, hate and distrust giving money to the NRA. Any candidate who speaks out against guns, no matter how logical and compassionate, is doomed. Even if he did get elected, the GOP in congress would kill it.

This is senseless rhetoric. People that want guns to murder will find them and get them. That's what the blackmarket is for. The people who aren't murderers and just want to protect themselves probably are better off not owning a gun. Killers are good at killing. The average Joe is not and could get hurt. But people should have a right to bare arms to protect themselves and their families. Besides, how do you make the laws more strict. This Colorado looney, like the guy said isn't from someplace most people like to believe insane people only crop up. Those inner city, blah, blah, blah people murder because of the conditions they are reared in; poverty, poor education, just plain stupid people drawn into a lifestyle by crazy people. The Colorado nut is a real killer. He is smart, blends, and simply enjoyed what he did. So who do you target to make the laws more strict? Look at the nutty children growing up nowadays, bullying, beating people down. They murder with no weapons but their mouths. So who do you profile as a potential murderer and what difference does it make to profile anyone. Half profiled will never do it because the profiles are wrong and the other half will do it and wow everyone is shocked when you'd have to be a fool to be shocked. Pleaz

We are all responsible esp. are elected officials for letting the NRA dictate our gun laws. This is going to happen again and we all know it so cut out the phoney regrets like this is such a big surprise.

Believe me, I don't want to take everyone's guns away, but, I do believe that we need to do a little better checking on the people who purchase them, particularly automatic weapons and handguns. Having some reasonable laws in place is not the same as preventing everyone from owning weapons. Unfortunately, any attempt to even keep track of gun ownership or perform background checks is attacked by the NRA. They'd get a lot more respect if they were at least willing to participate in some meaningful dialogue on the subject.
