Campaigns resume attacks

(CNN) – The bitter partisan fights that have been waged for months reappeared Monday after a weekend of reflection following Friday's deadly shooting in Colorado.

David Axelrod, a senior adviser to President Barack Obama's campaign, was the first to break the silence on Twitter.

The message directed readers to a report that some records from Romney's tenure as head of the Salt Lake City Olympic games had been destroyed.

With the silence seemingly broken, a few hours later Mitt Romney's campaign resumed their attacks on Obama's handling of the economy, sending a press release highlighting a series of reports detailing America's still-weak economic recovery.

"Millions of middle-class Americans are struggling in the Obama economy and there's no relief in sight," Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul wrote. "After three and a half years, the results of President Obama's policies are clear: businesses aren't hiring, poverty is climbing, and manufacturing is weakening. Middle-class Americans need a new direction, and a new president who can get our economy back on track."

Friday's shooting at a Colorado movie theater prompted a shift in the political tone, as both Romney and Obama turned previously scheduled rallies into solemn events to express sorrow for the Colorado massacre. Both campaigns canceled later events on Friday and pulled political advertising from the airwaves in Colorado.

On Sunday, Obama's campaign said it would keep ads off the air through Friday, and Romney's team said the ads would remain down "until further notice."

"You Olympians, however, know you didn't get here solely on your own power,” said Romney, who on Friday will attend the Opening Ceremonies of this year’s Summer Olympics. “For most of you, loving parents, sisters or brothers, encouraged your hopes, coaches guided, communities built venues in order to organize competitions. All Olympians stand on the shoulders of those who lifted them. We’ve already cheered the Olympians, let’s also cheer the parents, coaches, and communities. All right!

    Bend,
What is Romney's specific plans to "replace" ACA and how to pay for it? A: Nothing.

Pres. Obama passed a plan that was budgeted, and the more Americans find out what's actually in healthcare; the more support grows. Just ask Romneycare in MA.

I think you need to get grounded in reality – how do the incidents even compare? Holders deals with the possibility of releasing names of individuals which might put their lives in jeopardy – and Romney is just trying to conceal his wealth and possible laws he broke or trying to evade. I would bet you wanted the President to release his Birth Certificate too! So we can get over it when the taxes and reports are released!!!!

In summary, making government policies to encourage the private sector to do the heavy lifting to bring our economy and jobs back and then second to make the government more efficient and less of a burden on the economy. This will work, but first the guy leading the charge needs to understand both private and public sector economics. Mitt Romney is that guy.

The difference between the two campaign messages is one uses innuendo, speculation and halftruths that have been debunked by even the liberal media and the other is quoting actual economic facts and the all to real circumstances faced by the American people because of the policies of this President.
    ************************************
I suggest you research comments by Gingrich, Santorum, Perry and others who complained bitterly about the distortions and lies that the Romney camp carpet-bombed them with. Also, the first ad Romney released after he effectively wrapped up the GOP nomination was widely denounced for being a blantant distortion of statements that President Obama made, a pattern he has continued with and has never apologised for. By the way, what real economic facts has Romney been stating? Manufacturing has been driving the recovery, our trade deficit has been reduced, but it appears as though you have not been hearing those reports. Possibly because Romney has more experience creating wealth for himself, as opposed to Obama, who has been trying to deal withthe nation economy in all fo its facets. Sorry Junior, but you'll have to come up with something other than a Murdoch-style talking point to convince people that Romney is as pure as the driven snow.

Do you think a Pres. Romney would release his annual tax returns each year that he is in office? Judging from the reply he gave to a similar question several months ago while in NH, the answer is an unequivocal "no".

TO peace: why not ask the same quesiton of obama? Maybe because it's obvious the guy does not know how to create jobs! and his minnions would rather talke about something else? Now, unless CNN deleted some of mr axelrods tweet but I did not see nor read any plans for job creation? From what I can ascertain from mr axelrods tweet is attack, attack, attack, this coming from a president who promised hope and change – I would think the change part was about changing how politicians run thier campians?

    Hey SOUTHERN HOTTIE,

You can find many plans Romney has proposed...just not here at CNN. It won't take much looking to find his policy statements either on his website or at other news sites where you get more ballanced reporting.

So far all we here from the Obama campaign is attacks on Romney himself, trying to demonize him. WHERE IS THE PRESIDENTS PLAN MOVING FORWARD ???? TAXING THE RICH IS NO PLAN !!!!!

-Obama 2012 – BEND Forward America, take another 4 long years of OBAMA FAILURE

Where are all of Obama's campaing ads bragging about Obamacare???

Where are all of Obama's campaing ads bragging about how the TRILLION we wasted on the "stimulus plan" hasn't got unemployment down to 5.6%???

Oh yeah... his "stimulus" is a failure and most people want Obamacre repealed and replaced. Yes, Hope & Change sure has been a bust. No campaign ads about how great things are now huh? So we have a desperate campaing of smear and trivia from Obama. Smoke and mirrors mean't to distract from 4 years of failure. Truly sad but what do you expect from a con artist.
    ************************
Yeah the stim was a failure: just ask all those red state governors who used the money balance their budgets retroactively, then screamed about dependency on DC. The best they have is a man who effectively bailed on his elected postion after 2 years and taxed everything in sight while hs was governor, then turns around and blames DC for a lack of leadership when their own leadership does everything to delay, obstruct and slow the recovery so they can put in the Mormon Aristocrat? Where is his plan? Where are the jobs Boehner promised us? Oh yes, covered with dust after getting rid of the ACA 30 times and defunding anything that does not have a weapon attached to it. Useless shills for Billionaires with offshore bank accounts and no sense of patriotism.

    Bend,
Please Google "Tax Policy Center Obama Romney"

Romney would indeed increase deficits by $5 trillion, while Pres. Obama's plan reduces it by $2 trillion. Truth matters.

What is Romney's Plan? He refuses to give any details of his plan(s) about anything! What is he afraid of – oh yea his record in Mass. – his record of losing jobs, outsourcing jobs, HIS FAILURES! Where are the Records from the Olympics? Why did he destroy them – what was he hiding? If he gets in Nixon's Administration would look tame!

Like he did in MA, where he taxed everything that moved for the middle class, cut education, and fored local governments to increase taxes by the largest amount in the country? Romney only understands the private and public sectors so they can enrich him. He confuses his well-being with that of the country, something Adam Smith warned about the " Weatlth of Nations", when he bluntly stated that business people could not be relied upon to run the country, since the good of the nation was not the same as what was good for the business class. My question to you is, what are the details? If the fiction that Obama lied and lacked details on his intentions is what is driving you, don't you think Romney owes it to us to give us details, or is it like his tax returns, something he knows will give further ammunition to his critics that say he has not got a clue, or its all about him and his tax bracket?

Romney the clown and Ann need to show their tax returns for the last ten years and prove they are not tax cheats...
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________
Hardly. If there is any question of "tax cheating", the IRS needs to do its job and conduct an audit. And I am sure Mitt Romney would welcome an audit. But Obama/ Biden 2012 is struggling with any plan dealing with real issues and their last 3 1/2 years of performance trying to address these same issues, so expect a focus on unfounded personal attacks like this. After all, with $1 billion to spend they gotta try whatever they can, right? They count on people just like yourself.

@Four – "making government policies to encourage the private sector to do the heavy lifting to bring our economy and jobs back and then second to make the government more efficient and less of a burden on the economy"
    *****************************************************************
Those are goals, not a plan. Is Romney also going to cure cancer and bring world peace? What specifically does he plan to do? We made the mistake of giving the GOP control of the House to go with their ability to filabuster the Senate at will. What have we gotten – zero votes on the Presidents jobs plan, playing chicken with our global credit standing, dozens of useless attempts to repeal "Obamacare", repeated anti-abortion bills not supported by public opinion, and other useless wastes of Congresses' time, such as reaffirming that our motto is "In God, we Trust". Now, you think we should give the power of the POTUS to the GOP? No thanks!

No, that doesn't work. It doesn't even pass the smell test. The question is how does Romney plan to pay for his adddtional $500 billion in reduced revenue, better known as a deficit and debtthat his tax plan will incur. Your reply is pure nonesense. "...making government policies to encourage the private sector to do the heavy lifting..."

If I didn't know you any better, that almost sounds like you want the private sector to carry the burden of paying for Romney's tax cut plan through a tax increase.

Really? Is your partisanship such that you totally disregard history? If I recall, George Bush was our President when the house of cards came tumbling down. Granted, a Democratic House and Senate (after '06), but prior to that when all the fun and groundwork was done?....

Why are you dems so fasinated with tax returns and the like? What does any of it have to do with this election? You just use it to create a false image. Here is the solution: at the count of 3 Romney will release tax returns from 2009 and 2010. Obama will release all his college records, grades, and thesis. Since Obama has nothing to hide this is a fair trade off, right?

Of course Axelrod was the first to break the silence becuase Obama can't run on his pitiful record. Over 40 straight months of unemployment being over 8% and Obamanation owns it. He had two years of Democratic control witth the house and senate and he still can't make it happen. His policies have made it worse and independents know it.

@Robert – If it is the President's responsibility to create jobs, then, yes, he has created over 4 million jobs in the last 32 months. That's way, way more than President Bush did in eight years.

Funny, Mitt is looking to lower taxes for job creators and balance that out by ending loopholes that mostly affect the not rich. I guess somewhere that makes sense. Just not here.
