GOP strategists: Bain attack ads are this year's Swift Boat campaign

(CNN) – Longtime Republican strategists see something familiar in President Barack Obama's re-election campaign's attacks on GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney's tenure as head of the private equity firm Bain Capital.

Those critiques, they say, seem to borrow a page from the 2004 Swift Boat Veterans for Truth campaign that called into question the service record of then-Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry, a decorated Vietnam War veteran.

    Been knwon for a LONG time that Obama was going to do this.... When you have no successes to run on and a majority want Obamacare repealed, you got nothing but mud to throw.

    So the GOP finally admits that the Swift Boat campaign was a carefully orchestrated, baseless yet effective character assassination of Kerry.

    Romney is running on his Bain record. Let's not forget what Romney did to his primary opponents. Did Romney think his run for President would be easy. I don't think it is swiftboating when the truth is being told. This is just the beginning of what Romney is hiding.

    Paul_I - effective character assassination of Kerry.
    =========================================
    I believe Kerry assassinated his own character when he went before Congress and called our military murdering huns.
    Quite unforgiveable.

    The difference between the "swift boat" ads and the ads showing Romney's unethical behavior at Bain Capital is the Bain ads tell the truth. The swift-boat ads attacked a true war hero and the Bain ads are exposing an entire culture of greed. Look at Vanity Fair's article this month complete wit sources and references.

    Abyss,
    Please stop exaggerating.

    Pres. Obama has successes during his time in office (equal pay for women, START Treaty, end DADT, OBL, First Responders, largest middle-class tax cut, etc).

    People are just getting to know Romney and his Bain ties to outsourcing American jobs.

    Obama is running on no record thus all the distractions from Bain to war on women, etc......from the Obama campaign. Bottom line, people are standing in the unemployment line wondering when the economy will get better, people are tired of having to figure out how to pay their bills and keep a roof over their heads. Food prices have gone up, gas prices are no better and everyone has exhausted their savings. And this is what Obama wants people to not think about with all his theatrics, gimmicks.

    Um, no.... the questions about Bain and the Olympics are valid, since Romney is touting his 'business experience'; he has no foreign affairs experience and he's avoiding his short stint as Mass. Gov. like the plague (don't want the Tea Party crazies to read about how Romeny Used to be pro-choice, and Used to be fairly non-bigoted – at least these are all stances he took when he thought this would get him elected Gov.) Now that he's running for Prez, he's changed All his beliefs to suck up to the Tea Partiers and the Hypo-vangelicals. SWIFTBOATING, on the other hand, was the Repbulicaan Party lying through its teeth, early and often, and getting away with it....

    Ironic the creators of the swift-boat lies expect somebody to feel sorry for them or even more rigdiculous – believe them! They trashed a war hero and the Bain Capital ads tell the truth. All they need to do is release Romney's tax records to "set the record straight'...

    Funny- none of these people complained while John Kerry was being Swift-boated.

    Even then, this is yet another big lie from the Republicans. The Swift-boat attacks were outright lies about John Kerry, while the Bain attacks are not in dispute. There is NO equivalency here.

    Did The Government Bail Out Romney’s Bain Capital?

    Republican Senate nominee Mitt Romney’s rescue of a business consulting firm was achieved in part by convincing the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. to forgive roughly $ 10 million of the company’s debts, according to sources close to the deal and federal records obtained by The Boston Globe. The way the company was rescued was with a federal bailout of $10 million. “The rest of us had to absorb the loss … Romney? He and others made $4 million in this deal. … Mitt Romney: Maybe he’s just against government when it helps working men and women. But this flip flopping moderate who also claimed to be progressive was for and against Obama’s wall street bailouts

    The facts of the Bain & Co. turnaround are a little more complicated, but a Boston Globe report from 1994 confirms that Bain saw several million dollars in loans forgiven by the FDIC.

    the Washington Post after the newspaper reported that Bain Capital, the private equity firm the GOP presidential candidate founded, invested in several US companies that outsourced jobs to China and India.

    Sorry but this type of FALSE EQUIVALENCY must be challenged by Democrats every time a Republican tries to pull it.

    The "swiftboaters" LIED about Kerry`s honorable & courageous military service which Kerry wasn`t even touting as the reason to vote for him.

    On the other hand, the Bain focus is FACTUAL and TRUE. SEC filings and business records[including tax returns] reveal this. Furthermore, the Bain spotlight is wholely relevant because Robmey has said he should be elected because of his business experience / career. What are we suppose to do, TRUST him? Sorry, I donlt think so!

    Mitt where are your foriegn & domestic tax returns dating back 4 years BEFORE you ran for elective office. What are you hiding, sir?

    Hey GOP, you can call it Karma, you can call it what goes around comes around, you can call it you reap what you sow, whatever. Romney could end it all today if he would release his tax returns, and tell us why his records as governor were deleted and the computers scrubbed and why his files from the Olympics were scrubbed. Romney is like an iceberg, the most dangerous part is hidden. And you have the guts to even bring this up after what Romney did to his primary opponents and after he called the President of the United States corrupt right before leaving on a foreign trip. Can you imagine if a Democrat had done this. The members of Congress would be on the floor calling it reasonous. So here it comes – you so richly deseve every pile of doodoo that rolls downhill on top of you.

    ROMNEY LIES ONCE AGAIN......he planned for this to happen and now that he got cault ...he lies about it and try's to cover it up...

    "adviser" to Romney. The newspaper said the person requested anonymity because the Romney campaign did not want to be seen as criticizing Obama to foreign media outlets.
    "We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and he feels that the special relationship is special," the adviser is quoted as saying. "The White House didn't fully appreciate the shared history we have."

    These are not Swift-boat style ads.
    Becuase of an emial I received, I've done some checking. Bain and company was the consulting firm that helped the companies Romeny cliams to have built. Bain Capital- the company romney started 9 neither an affiliate or division of Bani & Company) is strictly an investment company. In other owrds – only a private banking concern.
    Example- Stplae- a company used by Romney to show all the jobs he created was a functioning business when Bain Capital infused the company with money. The company used this money to expand its already in place stratedgy. so whatdid romeny really create? an investment opportunity- not one job.

    Asking questions about Romney's business and investment background - which, after all, he's been repeatedly touting as his major qualification for the Presidency - is fair game. I do think that the Republican strategists are right, though, that the Obama campaign could learn something from the Swiftboaters: the revelations and criticisms need to come from Romney's ex-colleagues and employees at Bain. It means so much more when it's personal, even if politics are clearly behind it (as with the millionaires who propped up the Swiftboaters, and made sure their message was broadcast loudly and longly to every corner of the country). No one does dirty tricks like the GOP.

    Albeit a borderline psychotic analogy they're selling here, it's even dumber for a different reason: even if true, it would be the GOP/Teatrolls whining about their own tactics being used against them. Turnaround is fair play. Sure, it may be distasteful, but when your side is responsible for introducing a somewhat new and definitely disgusting tactic into the political arena, one that would no doubt be part of future campaigning, you have no right to complain.

    =============================================================================================
    They served with the guy. You mean Kerry couldn't find people he served with to rebut the ads?

    Kerry had no valid reason to vote for him besides his military experience. He's done absolutely nothing in the Senate for years and years. Most of the American people thought so as well. Althouhg he would probably have been better than Obama, but not by much. Both are braindead liberals that keep trying the same failed things over and over.
