Obama ad airs in Colorado; campaign cites station mistake

(CNN) – A television ad from President Barack Obama's re-election campaign mistakenly aired in Colorado Springs Thursday morning, marking the first time since last Friday's deadly shooting a spot for one of the presidential candidates aired in the state.

Both candidates' campaigns said on the morning of the shooting they would discontinue airing political ads in the state. A spokeswoman for Obama's campaign said Sunday the ads would remain off the air through Friday. Romney's team said the ads would not be airing "until further notice."

Obama's campaign and the channel that played the ad both said it aired as a result of a station mistake.

According to ad trackers at the Campaign Media Analysis Group (CMAG), an Obama ad aired Thursday morning a 5:55 a.m. on KRDO, a CNN affiliate, in Colorado Springs.

The spot that aired, "The Choice," was released earlier this week, but Obama's campaign told CNN it would not air in Colorado until Saturday. It began airing in other battleground states Tuesday.

"As we said earlier this week, the ad in question will not be airing in Colorado until Saturday. It appears that this was a mistake on the part of the station," Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith wrote.

Phill Emmert, the general sales manager at KRDO, confirmed the ad aired by mistake.

"We did air it and it was a station error," Emmert said.

In the spot, Obama looks directly into the camera and tells voters, "Over the next four months, you have a choice to make."

The president says the choice isn't just between Democrats and Republicans, or between himself and Romney.

"It's a choice between two very different plans for our country," Obama explains. "Governor Romney's plan would cut taxes for the folks at the very top. Roll back regulations on big banks. And he says that if we do, our economy will grow and everyone will benefit. But you know what? We tried that top down approach. It's what caused the mess in the first place."

obama getting desperate and time is wasting away. i'm surprised he isn't out in colorado for more tv coverage. after all, he never met a tv camera he didn't like. maybe he can also announce his new gun control ideas while he's there? as they say, let no crisis go to waste.

I'm sure the people of Colorado more than understand the Station made a mistake because this is a station that all Colorodians like because they are one of them.

Obama's plan? Keep spending until the country declares bankruptcy. More class warfare because the government will spend more and more and all those evil rich people will NEVER be "paying their fair share". It is called private property confiscation using the tax system and then given to whoever supports the Democrats, the unions, governemnt dependents, campaign contributors, etc. Obamacare will destroy the healthcare system and millions and millions of people that like their doctors and healthcare plan WILL lose it. Obama lied, YOU will pay for it.

And then there are the MASSIVE tax increases.... but hey, you didn't actually believe all this was really free did you?

This one would be tough to blame on George Bush or the Republicans in congress, so it looks like the television station takes the hit here. But typical for Obama/ Biden's style of taking responsibility,"...someone else did it!". And no apology.

-------------------------------------------------President Obama was intent on NOT airing the commercial in Colorado out of respect for the tragedy in Aurora. Most rational people would find it natural to want to know how the commercial got aired. It is very important for the voters and the people of Colorado to know that the President's campaign had NOTHING to do with the error as it goes to their perception of the President's sensitivity towards their situation and his integrity.
Only a FOOL would be shocked by the pursuit of clarification, and only an IDIOT would call it "blaming".
An error occurred. The appropriate party owned up to it. Get a grip.

Obama is the campaigner in chief. He started campaigning as soon as he was elected in 2008, and hasn't paused since. He said he would work tirelessly on the economy, but has not met with his own jobs advisory group for several months!

Who freekin cares? Like the shooting suddenly makes the election unimportant? Grow a pair and get a grip, people. I don't happen to give a runny crap if either of them starts running their ads today or had just kept running them all along....and I'm pretty sure most Coloradans would feel the same.

It would have been interesting to get your take if Mitt Romney had been the one to air an ad first and then claim it was a mistake by the station.

From Denver, CO.......Life goes on....our community has been touched by a terrible tragedy but we pulled together and will get through this! The folks here appreciated our President's visit and the compassion he showed the victims.

To Claudia in TX........how sad you can be so cold at a time when some many have lost so much!!! May god help your soul!! and the entire state you live in!

I personally happen to agree with you. However both candidates decided for whatever reason to pull their ads, the President's ad aired. Who screwed up?
I was of the opinion that the only thing that should've been pulled off the air permanently was Limpballs. His ridiculous commentary and conclusions about the villain in that movie was the only incendiary political comment linked to the movie that I could call to mind.
    It is what is.

    @Sniffit "Who freekin cares?"
It is not the mistake but the almost dogmatic way that Obama's campaign continues his policy of blame anyone but Obama.
I actually read a surrogate editorial blaming the liberals who voted for him but dared to question his policies (like me). That is reaching!

Just to respond to all the posters above spewing invective like "sure it was" and that it was probably on purpose: At least President Obama kept his word - I have family in Colorado and they confirm to me that they were hearing and seeing Romney ads on a fairly regularly basis all weekend. Another lie from the Romney camp? Gambling at Rick's? I'm shocked! Shocked I tell you

@Dominican mama 4 Obama "President Obama was intent on NOT airing the commercial in Colorado out of respect for the tragedy in Aurora."

Yet his campaign did. So his campaign couldn't handle this? I'd think as a liberal, you'd be more interested in what happened here. You shouldn't automatically bash the other side when your side screwed up. It's just like Obama's presidency, no accountability.

I have a choice to make. I choose to mute my TV every time a political ad comes on. I am sick of the negative advertising. Colorado needs 4 months of peace and quiet without any ads from any of these jokers.

  18. NOT BACKWARD into the GOP FISCAL ABYSS

@Dave – He said he would work tirelessly on the economy, but has not met with his own jobs advisory group for several months!
    ----------------------------
What's the point Dave ?? The Grand Obstructionist Party controlled House has already shot down farm and jobs bills this week and will block anything Obama tries to push, as they have done for the last FOUR years. But that's all irrelevant when attacking the POTUS with ridiculous unfounded spoutrage that is typical Repug. Try checking out some FACTS before wishing the country back on the path to fiscal ruin that the GOP's failed trickle-down economic policies created.

    ===

    Step 1: Read ENTIRE article.

Step 2: See that the station admitted it was their mistake.

Step 3: Accept that [whoever] was correct to blame them.

Step 4: Move on with life instead of vomitting partisan talking points that are entirely inapplicable.

The worst mistake this country can make is to elect a man that is controlled by the extreme right wing of the GOP and a few secret billionaires donating millions and millions of dollars to make it happen. You want to see this country disappear as the leader of the free world – just elect another right wing extremist and see what happens. Unfortunately, if Romney is elected, he will have to maintain his crazy wacko base for reelection and then please all the billionaires that bought him the office. You want to talk scary – that's scary. Romney is like an iceberg – the most dangerous part is well hidden.

@Dean – This larger error occured four years ago, when U.S. voters put this clown in the White House.
    ---------------------–
You got it wrong.. it happened 12 years ago when the SCOTUS elected Dubya. It was fiscal runaway for the next 8 yrs.. culminating in an $850 BILLION TARP bailout, the highest gas prices in history (July '08), a $1.47 TRILLION deficit in '08, over 700,000 jobs a month being lost and TWO unfunded wars (which Obama had to put $3 TRILLION on the books to cover). This is what the POTUS inherited.. that and an opposition party whose stated goal is/was to ensure that Obama would be a one term President. You've only got to read some of the right wing nut spoutrage here, to see they've been doing real good at herding the lemmings along.

No, liberals would not automatically bash the other side. They would grumble and mumble amongst themselves as they tried figure out: was it an accident; was it intentional; if it were an accident how will conservatives try to spin it; if it were intentional how will conservatives try to spin it: should we say something now or should we let the speak first about it; if we speak out first what do we say? Well, first we need to figure out if was accidental or intentional. And around and around they go. That's what liberals would do.
