Pew: Many Americans don't know religion of either presidential candidate

(CNN) – Americans have limited knowledge of the presidential candidates’ religious faith, but their concerns about the candidates’ respective religious beliefs are unlikely to play a major role in the 2012 race, according to a Pew survey released Thursday.

Most Americans, 60%, know that presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is a Mormon; he would be the first member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints elected to the White House. Among those who are aware of Romney’s religion, 81% say that they are comfortable with it or that it doesn’t matter to them.

does a christan use langauage about others that includes the words "clinging to their guns and religion"? no, of course not. obama just uses religion to further his leftist agenda. it is just more smoke to hide who obama really is.

Since you appear to have an inside track on this, please share with us exactly whom Obama is, other than being a legally elected POTUS – unlike the one the SCOTUS elected in 2000. Most Americans do NOT want to return to the failed trickle-down fiscal policies of the GOP, since that's what caused the mess Obama has been trying to get us out of. Real challenge when half of your team (Congress) is deliberately blocking every corrective effort. Religion has nothing to do with it.. it's about getting this country back on the right track, and the Grand Obstructionist Party has nothing to offer.

Those were the words of a prophet. For that is exactly what has happened. Isn't it? The extremes of the right wing that cling to their guns and another segment that cling to their religions have all about run all of the sensible people out of the Republican Party.

Christians don't turn their backs on the weak, the sick, the elders, or the poor.

Many Americans don't even know who either candidate is, let alone their religion. It is scary as hell to see how ignorant so many people are of our civic processes. So many people can tell you every athlete or music star alive but can't tell you who their governor is. The Republicans want to continue with this ignorance. Schools are decimated by layoffs. College tuition is out of reach of so many now. Give thanks to 8 years of George Bush/Karl Rove/Dick Cheney and a Republican controlled Congress which decimated this country. How frightening to see the very same people wanting control of our country again! Americans do have short memories and sometimes one thinks perhaps we deserve what we get because of that short memory.

People of the United States of America, CNN and MSNBC Liberal Lean Forward Progessives,
People look,Mitt Romney is a Morman which is connected to the Church of Jesus Chirst of Latter Day Saints,
The key operative name/part of his religon as stated above is "Jesus Chirst" to which in my mind, is the Catholic Religon. All the WASPs,Bapists,Jews etc.(except Muslims) should take some comfort in that,he is at least assoiated at some level to Jesus Chirst and his teachings. There is no way in Hell that Mr.Romney will be influenced in anyway by the POPE in ROME.President Obama was raised as a Muslim as a child, the question that the Liberal Media should ask is; was President Obama Baptised into the Catholic Church. If not,in my mind at least he is still Muslim.Attending the basically Black Power so called Church of REV Wright and his teachings is all anyone needs to know about President Obama mindset. This is all so clear and why the Liberal Media is not reviewing this again tells you they are back in the tank for the President.

You would have to be dumb if you do not know that Romney is a Mormon. When it comes to Obama.....thats another question. We know Obama was raised in the M u s l i m religion but to say what he is now quite frankly escapes me. What religion was Jeremiah Wright? I suppose you can say it was christian but I really do not believe that Obama is a very religious person following any one particular religion. I suppose he may have some leanings to his early childhood religious beliefs.

Uh... What difference SHOULD a presidential candidates religion make? Are they running for a religious office? Or are they running to represent/lead the United States?

17% still think Obama's a muslim? There can be no argument that there are only 2 possible explanations for that:

    Stupidity or racism.

    Choose.

  11. Wake up people

President Obama is a Christian, he has stated it on many occasions. Some people think they know better than the POTUS himself and those are the uneducated and ill informed that think he's a Muslim.

    OBAMA 2012!

The topic of President Obama's religion was made off limits by the liberal media as soon as Rev Wright's diatribes were made public. After that, anyone who discussed it was labeled a racist by Obama's supporters and ignored by the media. Nothing to see here, move along...move along.

I think these comments speak for themselves. I am certainly glad I will be voting for a DIFFERENT candidate than @Frank.

We really need to get all this Voodoo out of American Politics. We seem to be declining as a nation the more we believe and worship an imaginary man in the sky.

Just when did we lose all rationality and decide that if a candidate BELIEVES in something IMAGINARY, then he/she would make a great president or congressman?

The dumbing of America folks; religion & government are as toxic – as anyone with an IQ above 70 can see – as are oil and water.

They simply do not belong together...

    =====

In 2001, the Vatican declared baptisms of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints invalid and cannot be considered a valid Christian baptism. It has also directed bishops to keep the church's genalogical records away from Mormons in order to prevent them from trying to posthumously baptize people, even those that are already dead.

    Your move.

Third possibility, of course, is they heard him refer to his "muslim faith" in an interview with Stephanopolous.
