Phelps v. Lochte: Romney picks Phelps, Michelle Obama demurs

(CNN) – This year's closely watched Olympics rivalry between Team U.S.A. swimmers Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte has Americans picking sides, including presumptive GOP Mitt Romney. First lady Michelle Obama, however, is keeping her pick under wraps.

Asked simply to pick "Phelps or Lochte" on NBC Friday, Romney went with probability, rather than passion.

"I think it's more likely to be Phelps but I don't know," Romney said.

NBC attempted to pose the same question to Michelle Obama, who is leading the American delegation to the 2012 games. Weatherman Al Roker, in a moment of confusion, asked the first lady for her "thoughts on Ryan vs. Lochte."

Obama, however, seemed to understand what Roker was getting at.

"Go Team U.S.A.!" she declared, avoiding a choice between the two American athletes.

Romney and Mrs. Obama will both attend Friday evening's opening ceremony.

Later in the morning, Mrs. Obama spoke at an event for Team U.S.A. athletes, saying their achievements were being felt back home.

"You never know who you're inspiring," Obama said "You just never know. From a family like ours on the South Side of Chicago to young athletes who are going to pick up a soccer ball or start running after watching something that you all do. I know for many of you, that's how you got here, watching someone else. So you never know who you're going to inspire, because all of you are certainly inspiring me every day."

    @biffyb –

    The queen had no beef with the hug so why should anyone else? But as to Romney's little visit, the host country and city are clearly offended by his comments. And don't even mention MI6. It's like Fight Club. A memo Mitt obviouly didn't get.

    I think it's "Fair" to say Mitt has worn out his welcome and it's time for him to go home now that he's insulted the Brits and Team U.S.A. And don't forget he can't talk against President Obama when he goes to Isreal and that's why Adelson is traveling with him because he can and when he does Romney must be held responsible.

    First he questions whether London is ready...and in the ensuing backlash, changes his tune.

    So, today he picked Phelps....tune in tomorrow when he chooses Lochte instead.

    I’ll take some of that action…but you've got to throw in Romney’s trips to Poland and Israel too.

    Michelle, please remind the athletes that they did not get there on there own.... you know, without the government, they would never had made it. God forbid they think that individual success is obtainable without Big Brother's help.

    Romney never shows passion, unless he's defending his secret tax forms.

    This is going to suck for Phelps if he loses. Republicans will be determined to show that he intentionally lost just to bug Romney.

    And, Youlanda, I think if you ask each one of these athletes they'll be happy to explain to you how they had the help of many people around them to teach, train and guide them to meet their goal. But you seems to have missed the point of what Obama was saying, so it's not going to help going over the facts again. Just stick with the GOP lies, that'll make you feel better.

    Awfully telling that a wannabee United States President isn't quite up to thinking that far in advance of attending the Olympics, don't you think?

    @Yolanda:
    ****
    Do you mean she should quote Romney's words when speaking at the 2002 Olympics?
    "You Olympians know you didn't get here solely on your own power....all Olympians stand on the shoulders of
    those who lift them". ie, parents, coaches and even COMMUNITIES who build the venues (no doubt with
    taxpayer's money).
    Is that what you mean?

    Articles such as this are intended to incite and separate people, rather than bring them together. A vast number of comments are indicative of people fighting against each other and actually ignoring the article itself. The article was obviously written by just another bored "wannabe" journalist, with nothing better to do, as is the case with a majority of articles on CNN & MSN. Both favor sensationalism over reality and what really matters.

    Independent here. What exactly is Obama doing to our country? If you're somehow trying to make a point that we were all doing fine and the U.S. was in great shape and then Obama got elected and ruined it all, then I'm definitely not feelin you.

    No David, I aint feeling you! Perhaps you supported GWB and perhaps you now support Mitt Romney who is vowing to continue the Bush policies??? Don't you remember what Bush did to our country? Two deadly and costly wars and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression? And what has President Obama done to this country? He has stabilized the economy, saved our Auto industry that built tanks, planes, ships, and artillery to help us win WWII and preserve and solidify our democracy. He has passed Affordable Healtcare to ensure all of our citizens can get the care they need. And if you ask me, I always believe that a healthie America is simply a stronger America. The President has passed Financial Reform to prevent another economic crisis from occuring. He has passed the Lilly Ledbetter Act to ensure that women get equal pay and he has repealed Don't Ask, Don't tell and he has passed the Dream Act to prevent the premature deportation of immigrant children. He has restored our trust and credibility abroad and has safeguard and improve our national security by taking out some of the world's dangerous terrorists. Imposed sanctions on Rogue states like Iran and has inspired and supported the Arab Spring and helped to bring about democracy in Egypt, Libya and Sudan. And....Well, should I say more? Obama/Biden/Roberts 2012!

    Yes, 16 trillion in debt, high unemployment, and too many problems to list in a short post– but by all means, waste our time by asking them who they think will win a swimming race!! While you are at it media, why dont you ask them if they prefer 2% or skim milk? French fries or onion rings? THESE are the things we need to know before going into the voting booth!!!!!

    Easy now! I believe those domestic problems you mentioned are discussed each and every day and no one has forgotten that we are in dire economic times. But sometimes we need a little leisure and diversion like the Olympics! Take it easy and take a deep breath Pat!

    Not at all. Obama inherited a mess and made it worse and blames GWB for it all. I'm saying that the impact on Obamacare in the long run is devastating. If the economy is in desperate times, why do you shove it down our throats as your first major act? Why has he not met with his Jobs council for 191 days and counting? Morally, I oppose same sex marriage, Obama was in the closet lying until he showed his true colors at time where he needed to energize the base and could cash in? How's that for moral leadership. I'm picking a few of my pain points here, and I won't go on... my response above was to try to clear the ridiculous oh you must just be racist distraction, and point out that there are GOPers who really admire the fact that Obama is black... are you feelin me now?
